Mycorrhizae and mycorrhizal fungi of boreal species of Platanthera and Coeloglossum (Orchidaceae)

The seasonal development and mycorrhizal fungi of the mycorrhizae of Platanthera hyperborea, Platanthera obtusata, Platanthera orbiculata, and Coeloglossum viride are described. Fungal endophytes belonging to the following taxa were identified: Leptodontidium orchidicola, Epulorhiza repens, Epulorhiza anaticula comb, nov., and Ceratorhiza goodyerae-repentis. In addition, anamorphic material of a species tentatively identified as Sebacina sp. was found solely in the mycorrhizae of P. orbiculata. A series of isolates bearing distinctive, clamped monilioid cells and belonging to an unidentified species of Sistotrema was found in P. obtusata. This is the first report of a Sistotrema species from orchid mycorrhizae. An isolate from C. viride, with broad hyphae, large globose monilioid cells, and dark brown mycelium, resembles Burgeff's 1936 description of Rhizoctonia anomala nom.inval. This taxon is validated, redescribed, and presented as the new species Moniliopsis anomala.

Pestalotiod taxa commonly occur in plants as endophytes, pathogens or saprobes. Endophytic Pestalotiopsis and Neopestalotiopsis species were isolated from Dendrobium cariniferum, D. loddigesii and two unidentified orchid species sampled in southwestern China and northern Thailand. Morphological and molecular comparison identified the isolates as two new species; Neopestalotiopsis dendrobii, and Pestalotiopsis doitungensis; two existing species P. lushanensis and P. trachicarpicola. This is the first report of Neopestalotiopsis isolated from the orchid genus Dendrobium and is the first report of pestalotiod fungi in D. careniferum. Pestalotiopsis lushanensis and P. trachicarpicola are new recorded fungal endophytes in Dendrobium orchids.

AbstractThree new mymarid egg parasitoids of the carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis(LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), are described:Anaphes coteiHuber from Nova Scotia;Anaphes listronotiHuber from Quebec; andAnaphes victusHuber from Quebec, Michigan, and Texas. A key to the species is given.Anaphes sorditatus(Girault), with which at least one of the new species was previously confused, is redescribed. Althoughlistronotiandsorditatuscannot presently be distinguished morphologically, they are biologically distinct and have different hosts. Crosses between malesordidatusand femalevictusyielded female offspring in 27% of the tests but none in the reciprocal crosses. The corresponding control crosses resulted in 90 and 30% female offspring. Mating did not occur in attempts to crosssordidatuswithlistronoti. On three occasions an unidentified species ofAnagruswas reared from field-collected carrot weevil eggs. This represents the first report of anAnagrusspecies from Curculionidae.

A new late Osagean (Lower Mississippian) crinoid fauna is described from the Muldraugh Member of the Borden Formation of central Kentucky. The Muldraugh Member records a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic tempestite-dominated ramp environment. This is the first report of late Osagean crinoids from this depositional setting on the eastern side of the Eastern Interior Basin of the midcontinental United States. The Muldraugh crinoid fauna contains 66 species and is dominated by advanced cladids. This fauna has similarities to other late Osagean faunas but is distinctive both in species abundance and rank order abundance of species. Eight new species are described from this fauna, includingCamptocrinus nudus, Paradichocrinus ramus, Poteriocrinites horowitzi, Parascytalocrinus pentagonus, Abrotocrinus debrae, Abrotocrinus springeri, Worthenocrinus hardinensis, andMespilocrinus myllos.

A new species of Amanita sect. Roanokenses, A. brunneofolia, from South Korea, is described based on morphological and molecular evidences. The species is characterized by medium- to large-sized basidiomata, a greenish white pileus covered with brownish, floccose pyramidal volval remnants, an appendiculate margin, reddish brown lamellae, a long radicating stipe, and ellipsoid to elongate amyloid basidiospores. Based on both nrLSU and combined dataset (nrLSU, rpb2 and tef1-α), A. brunneofolia formed a monophyletic clade and clearly separated from other Amanita species. In addition, we describe two other Amanita species in A. sect. Roanokenses, namely, A. caojizong and A. sphaerobulbosa. This is the first report of these species for South Korea.

Diarimella laurentidae, a new species occurring on dead bark and decorticated twigs of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.), is reported from the Muir's Wood ecological reserve, located in the centre of the Haut-Saint-Laurent region in the province of Quebec. Diarimella laurentidae is characterized by stromatic, pulvinate, black, setose fructifications composed of a basal stroma of textura angularis, a brown peripheral wall of textura porrecta, conidiomatal setae of two types, and unicellular multisetulate conidia. Its relationships with described Diarimella species is discussed. This is the first report of a species of Diarimella from North America.Key words: Diarimella laurentidae, new fungus species, coelomycete, Fagus grandifolia.

Only three species of Trichomyia Haliday have been recorded in Mexico. Trichomyia cirrata Coquillett, 1902, is recognized by its female characteristics, T. fairchildi Vargas and D az-N jera, 1953, was described based only on the wing and must be considered as species inquirenda, and T. maldonadoi (Vargas, 1953), which was described based on one female specimen. Specimens of Trichomyia collected in the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Oaxaca, Mexico, allowed this female to be associated with the male of T. brevitarsa (Rapp, 1945), thus providing a first report of this species in Mexico. Consequently, T. maldonadoi is proposed as a synonym of T. brevitarsa. Additionally, a new species of Trichomyia from the state of Veracruz, Mexico, is described and illustrated based on the male and female characteristics.

New species of Undifilum , from locoweeds Astragalus lentiginosus Vitman and Astragalus mollissimus Torr., are described using morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses as Undifilum fulvum Baucom & Creamer sp. nov. and Undifilum cinereum Baucom & Creamer sp. nov. Fungi were isolated from dried plants of A. lentiginosus var. araneosus , diphysus , lentiginosus , and wahweapensis collected from Arizona, Oregon, and Utah, USA, and A. mollissimus var. biglovii , earleii , and mollissimus collected from New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, USA. Endophytic fungi from Astragalus locoweeds were compared to Undifilum oxytropis isolates obtained from dried plant material of Oxytropis lamberteii from New Mexico and Oxytropis sericea from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Extremely slow growth in vitro was observed for all, and conidia, if present, were ellipsoid with transverse septa. However, in vitro color, growth on four different media, and conidium size differed between fungi from Astragalus spp. and U. oxytropis. Neighbor-joining analyses of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) gene sequences revealed that U. fulvum and U. cinereum formed a clade distinct from U. oxytropis. This was supported by neighbor-joining analyses of results generated from random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fragments using two different primers.

This paper provides the first report of the snail-killing fly genus Dichetophora Rondani, 1868 on the Korean peninsula with the discovery of two new species, D. koreana sp. nov. and D. nigricorpa sp. nov. Descriptions and illustrations of the new species and keys to the Palearctic species of this genus are given.
