The free and protein amino acid patterns present in the leaves of the species of the genus Gossy pium were determined. The presence or absence of the free amino acids except for glycine and γ-amino butyric acid did not appear to be of value for separation of the species. However, the patterns of the protein amino acids varied between the genomes, and seemed to separate the species. These patterns were separated into groups similar to those found for the DNA-base ratios and the cytotaxonomic grouping of the species.

1. An investigation has been made into the changes that take place in the free amino-acid pattern when kale-water slurries are allowed to ferment under conditions of (a) aeration, (b) anaerobiasis and (c) partial sterilization with sulphur dioxide.2. It has been found that, with aerated mixtures, the loss of free amino-acids is virtually complete within 2 weeks, while there is only a slight loss with the anaerobic mixtures. With mixtures containing sulphur dioxide no loss of amino-acids occur.3. The formation of α-amino butyric acid possibly from threonine has been noted.

Abstract Free amino acids in the tonsils of 20 individuals were measured column chromatographically. Those always found in readily detectable amounts included O-phosphoserine, taurine, O-phosphoethanolamine, aspartic acid, hydroxyproline, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, proline, glycine, alanine, α-amino-n-butyric acid, valine, cystine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, ornithine, γ-amino-butyric acid, lysine, histidine, and arginine. Results were compared for three clinical pathological groups and for four age groups. Some abnormal values may result from the pathological conditions.

Dry weights of stipes and pilei of Flammulina velutipes grown on nutrient-supplemented sawdust increased throughout the growth period. The pilei weighed only slightly less than the stipes. Amounts of total organic nitrogen, α-amino nitrogen, and alkali-soluble protein increased in the whole pileus and stipe as the fruitbodies elongated, but the concentrations on a dry weight basis decreased although they were always highest in the pileus. The concentration of alkali-insoluble nitrogen increased in both structures and was highest in the stipe. Concentrations of total nitrogen and protein in surface mycelium did not change significantly when fruitbodies formed but increased markedly when their growth ceased. An average of 8.3 mg dry weight of spores containing about 0.6 mg of nitrogen was released during the life of the fruitbody. Changes in 18 free and 17 protein amino acids were followed quantitatively in the pileus and stipe. Glutamic and aspartic acids and alanine were always among the four predominant free amino acids. Lysine and arginine concentrations remained low in the stipes but increased considerably in the expanding pilei. Ornithine levels increased strongly in the stipe during the early part of rapid elongation but remained almost constant and low in the pilei. Free proline was detected only in traces. Valine became the most abundant protein amino acid during elongation, especially in the stipe. There was very little bound methionine and cystine. In surface mycelium levels of free amino acids were low before fruiting and close to the end of fruitbody growth. Protein amino acids increased during that interval but their proportions remained virtually unchanged and valine was not predominant. The concentration of urea remained very low in both pilei and stipes during their growth.

Needles of grand fir, Abiesgrandis (Dougl.) Lindl., were analyzed to determine: (1) how various forms of nitrogen fertilizer affect amino acid composition, and (2) whether amino acids in the needles differ from those in stem bark (determined in a previous study). Young grand fir were grown in a shadehouse and free amino acids were analyzed four times from May to August, using thin-layer electrophoresis and chromatography. The effects of foliar-applied nitrogen fertilizer on needle amino acids depended on the form of nitrogen. Urea or ammonium nitrate promoted large increases in arginine, glutamine, alanine, lysine, and γ-amino butyric acid, whereas calcium nitrate caused smaller increases. The occurrence of several trace amino acids also varied with the form of nitrogen. Comparison of needle amino acids with those in the stem of unfertilized trees revealed that levels of total amino nitrogen, arginine, glutamic acid, and glutamine were much greater in the stem bark than in the needles, but levels of γ-amino butyric acid and alanine were higher in needles. Traces of aspartic acid, ornithine, and tyrosine were found in the needles, but not in the stem.

Free and protein-bound amino acids in serum and scales were investigated. In serum the bound amino acids of psoriatics are significantly higher with exception of Pro, Met, Tyr and Phe in contrast to normal subjects. For free amino acids the differences between normal subjects and psoriatics found in serum and scales are not significant. Results are discussed in relation to the single amino acids and the biochemical correlations are outlined which takes the pathological process as a basis.

Using intragastric titration in dogs with gastric fistulas, dose-response studies were carried out with liver extract and with a mixture of amino acids that matched the free amino acids found in liver extract. All solutions were adjusted to pH 7.0 and osmolality to 290 mosmol x kg-1. Doses are expressed as the sum of the concentrations of all free amino acids. At each dose studied (free amino acid concentration: 2.8, 5.6, 11, 23, and 45 mM), acid secretion in response to the free amino acid mixture was not significantly different from that of liver extract. The peak response to both liver extract and the free amino acid mixture occurred with the 23-mM dose and represented about 60% of the maximal response to histamine. The serum concentrations of gastrin after liver extract and the amino acid mixture were not significantly different. It is concluded that in dogs with gastric fistula, gastric acid secretion and release of gastrin were not significantly different in response to liver extract and to a mixture of amino acids that simulated the free amino acid content of liver extract.
