For a geodetic network, the least squares adjustment gives the best possible solution and an indication of the quality of that solution. On this basis, a computer program is being developed at the University of Michigan to determine the best and most economic configuration networks and the accuracies required in measuring.

The political scientists at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, concerned about what becomes of political science majors in today's job market, have completed a survey of the occupational status and quality of life of recent alumni. This paper examines the potential contributions of that survey as a model for future evaluations of political science programs and other liberal arts programs. In the paper, I will discuss the design of the study, its findings, and the lessons that might be useful to those who would wish to do such studies on their own campuses.DesignThe University of Michigan, Dearborn evaluation was done primarily by, and for the benefit of, the political science faculty. Thus, the evaluation was tailored to particular faculty interests and concerns.

Many factors led to dam construction failure so that deformation monitoring activities is needed in the area of the dam. Deformation monitoring is performed in order to detect a displacement at the control points of the dam. Jatigede Dam deformation monitoring system has been installed and started to operate, but there has been no evaluation of the geometry quality of control networks treated with IGS points for GNSS networks processing. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the geometric quality of GNSS control networks on deformation monitoring of Jatigede Dam area. This research data includes the GNSS measurements of five CORS Jatigede Dam stations (R01, GG01, GCP04, GCP06, and GCP08) at doy 233 with network configuration scenarios of 12 IGS points on two quadrants (jat1), three quadrants (jat2), and four quadrants (jat3 and jat4). GNSS networks processing was done by GAMIT to obtain baseline vectors, followed by network processing usingparameter method of least squares adjustment. Networks processing with least squares adjustment aims to determine the most optimal  by precision and reliability criterion. Results of this study indicate that network configuration with 12 IGS stations in the two quadrants provides the most accurate coordinates of CORS dam stations. Standard deviations value of CORS station given by jat1 configuration are in the range of 2.7 up to 4.1 cm in X-Z components, whereas standard deviations in the Y component are in the range 5.8 up to 6.9 cm. An optimization assessment based on network strength, precision, and reliability factors shows optimum configuration by jat1.

Solving the world’s health challenges requires multidisciplinary collaborations that bring together the talents, experiences, resources, and ideas from multiple sectors in low and middle-income countries (LMIC) and high -income countries (HIC). Cystic Fibrosis (CF) was thought to be a disease of Caucasian populations from European decent. However, it has been shown to affect people from all ethnic backgrounds. CF care varies significantly for people with CF (pw CF) from HIC with median survival approaching 50 years of age, to LMIC with pw CF dying in infancy or early childhood. To address the discrepancy in quality of care and outcomes, we report on a collaboration between our team at the University of Michigan cystic fibrosis center (UoM CFC), through support from the Middle East CF Association (MECFA) and the CF Foundation (CFF), and a CF center in Turkey (Marmara University CF Center, Istanbul) to address deficiencies and improve quality of care in that center. The collaboration has been successful in improving Ma CFC data and patient care. This partnership can be viewed as a model of collaboration to be duplicated in other Middle East Countries and LMIC to deliver optimal CF care.

This paper focus on the establishment of Geodetic Network in Nigeria which serve as the framework and basis for every spatially referenced system in the country. It explains the historical development of Nigeria geodetic network, its mode of establishment, data acquisition method, computation and adjustment principles. The use recent positioning satellites (GNSS) and its several methods were discussed with the Least Squares Adjustment techniques. Literatures on best practices were reviewed to identify gaps that need to be covered so as to have an accurate and efficient geodetic network in the Nigeria. The research is basically on principles and methodology on the establishment of Geodetic Network in Nigeria and silent on hardware and software selection for its establishment.

GNU project Gama for adjustment of geodetic networks is presented. Numerical solution of Least Squares Adjustment in the project is based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and General Orthogonalization Algorithm (GSO). Both algorithms enable solution of singular systems resulting from adjustment of free geodetic networks.

The implementation of local geodetic networks for georeferencing of rural properties has become a requirement after publication of the Georeferencing Technical Standard by INCRA. According to this standard, the maximum distance of baselines to GNSS L1 receivers is of 20 km. Besides the length of the baseline, the geometry and the number of geodetic control stations are other factors to be considered in the implementation of geodetic networks. Thus, this research aimed to examine the influence of baseline lengths higher than the regulated limit of 20 km, the geometry and the number of control stations on quality of local geodetic networks for georeferencing, and also to demonstrate the importance of using specific tests to evaluate the solution of ambiguities and on the quality of the adjustment. The results indicated that the increasing number of control stations has improved the quality of the network, the geometry has not influenced on the quality and the baseline length has influenced on the quality; however, lengths higher than 20 km has not interrupted the implementation, with GPS L1 receiver, of the local geodetic network for the purpose of georeferencing. Also, the use of different statistical tests, both for the evaluation of the resolution of ambiguities and for the adjustment, have enabled greater clearness in analyzing the results, which allow that unsuitable observations may be eliminated.

Numerous statistics that can be obtained from the processing of the observations and the adjustment of a geodetic network can be used to assess the quality of the network and the observational data. The processes used for assessment and planning depend on the needs and the capabilities of the user. Statistical information derived from nonsingular vis-à-vis singular (“inner-constraint”) adjustments is discussed. Standards for the characterization of the quality of networks are reviewed. Suggestions are made on the type of information that should be directly available from a geodetic control file.

INTRODUCTION The internet is a widely used, powerful resource for patients to research medical conditions. There is an extensive amount of information available on the internet. It is important for patient information to be accurate and in an easily accessible format. This article aims to assess the quality of patient information on hydrocephalus and compares the findings with recent evaluations in other surgical specialties. METHODS The term ‘hydrocephalus’ was searched for on the search engines http://www.google.com/ , http://www.bing.com/ and http://www.yahoo.com/ . The top 20 results of these searches were assessed using the University of Michigan consumer health website evaluation checklist. RESULTS The quality of patient information websites on hydrocephalus is highly variable. Websites rarely provide sufficient authorship information, do not review their information regularly enough and only reference material occasionally. The background of the provider was found to influence the quality of the website, with academic and care providers creating the best websites. CONCLUSIONS On comparing our findings with those of recent studies from other surgical specialties, it was found that there was often a conflict of interest between the background of the provider and the information supplied. It is recommended that clinicians personally research material for their patients to be able to guide them to suitable, accurate websites.
