We exhibit the one-loop multigluon effective Lagrangian in any dimension for a field theory with a quasilocal background, using the background-field formalism. Specific results, including counterterms (up to 12 space–time dimensions), have been derived, applied to the Yang–Mills theory and found to be in agreement with other string-inspired approaches.

In this talk the gauge symmetry for Wilsonian flows in pure Yang-Mills theories is discussed. The background field formalism is used for the construction of a gauge invariant effective action. The symmetries of the effective action under gauge transformations for both the gauge field and the auxiliary background field are separately evaluated. Modified Ward-Takahashi and background field identities are used in my study. Finally it is shown how the symmetry properties of the full theory are restored in the limit where the cut-off is removed.

We show that the two-loop contribution to the coefficient of the Chern–Simons term in the effective action of the Yang–Mills–Chern–Simons theory is infrared finite in the background field Landau gauge. We also discuss the difficulties in verifying the conjecture, due to topological considerations, that there are no more quantum corrections to the Chern–Simons term other than the well-known one-loop shift of the coefficient.

We compute the effective potential of SU(2) Yang–Mills theory using the background field method and the Faddeev–Niemi decomposition of the gauge fields. In particular, we find that the potential will depend on the values of two scalar fields in the decomposition and that its structure will give rise to a symmetry breaking.

Abstract There has been a renewed interest in the description of dressed asymptotic states à la Faddeev-Kulish. In this regard, a worldline representation for asymptotic states dressed by radiation at subleading power in the soft expansion, known as the Generalized Wilson Line (GWL) in the literature, has been available for some time, and it recently found applications in the derivation of factorization theorems for scattering processes of phenomenological relevance. In this paper we revisit the derivation of the GWL in the light of the well-known supersymmetric wordline formalism for the relativistic spinning particle. In particular, we discuss the importance of wordline supersymmetry to understand the contribution of the soft background field to the asymptotic dynamics. We also provide a derivation of the GWL for the gluon case, which was not previously available in the literature, thus extending the exponentiation of next-to-soft gauge boson corrections to Yang-Mills theory. Finally, we comment about possible applications in the current research about asymptotic states in scattering amplitudes for gauge and gravity theories and their classical limit.

The one-loop effective action describing polarization of the vacuum due to virtual electron-positron pairs in the Maxwell theory of electromagnetism was obtained by Heisenberg and Euler, in the limit of a background field that is constant on the scale of the electron Compton-wavelength. The case of vanishing electric field and constant, ultra-strong magnetic field B≫Bc, where [Formula: see text], yields a configuration whose energy density is less than that of the equivalent radiation field, suggesting why a magnetic field may be present in the early Universe back to the Planck era. For there is a similar but larger effect, allowing a "ferromagnetic" Yang–Mills vacuum state, in the grand-unified theory at temperatures [Formula: see text], analyzed by Skalozub. Some further aspects of ultra-strong magnetic fields are discussed vis-à-vis the origin of the Galactic field B g .
