São diversos os problemas presentes nos espaços das cidades brasileiras, principalmente nos grandes espaços urbanos. Um desses problemas é a degradação do meio ambiente decorrente de intervenções não planejadas nesses espaços. Nesse sentido, este trabalho tem o propósito de analisar a relação entre a produção do espaço urbano, que atribui diferentes usos ao solo e a degradação do meio ambiente na Bacia do Mata Fome em Belém, Pará. Além disso, foi realizado um mapeamento do uso do solo da área de estudo, onde foi utilizada a imagem do satélite Ikonos de 2006. Os resultados deste trabalho evidenciaram que a produção do espaço urbano na Bacia do Mata Fome e os diversos usos do solo, provocaram degradação ambiental, por desencadearem a destruição da cobertura vegetal, poluição da água e do solo, mudanças na topografia dos terrenos, inundações, riscos à saúde, entre outros danos.Palavras-chave: Meio ambiente; Urbanização; Bacia hidrográfica; Poluição.USE OF SOIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION: a case study of Mata Fome basin in Belém, ParáABSTRACTThere are several problems present in the spaces of brazilian cities, especially in large urban areas. The chapter analyzes the impacts of World Heritage List designation on the local economy, residents, and environment in the Vietnamese site of Hoi An Ancient Town. Findings from the study raise concerns about managing heritage tourism in developing countries. While Hoi An successfully attracts a large number of tourists and enjoys economic success from tourism, social and environmental sustainability are in question. This case study demonstrates that management of tourism at World Heritage-listed sites is facing challenges of land speculation, inflation, commodification of local culture, and environmental degradation.

Kampung Muara which is the upstream of Cimanuk watershed is oneof the areas experiencing environmental degradation caused by land use.In response to these problems, the Research Institute for HumanSettlements devised a model of eco-settlements as an upstream ofwatershed development. This research aims to determine the externalitiesrised from the implementation of eco-settlements model. The techniqueused for this research is case study, while design used is a descriptivemethod that is supported by primary and secondary data. The result of thisresearch shows that, the implementation of eco-settlements model canprovide external economy and lead to external diseconomy. Externaleconomy generated from tangible benefit and intangible benefit. Tangilblebenefits received by the community improvement of water quality andadditional income for the community. Intangible benefits gained from theimplementation of eco-settlements model is the presence of erosioncontrol, reduce risk of flooding, the formation of informal institutionPokjamas Hikmatul Jamaah, and knowledge improvement of the trainingprocess, particularly in the operation of the technology. The international Eco-Schools programme promotes Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through introducing and stimulating pro-environmental initiatives by school learners and staff. This enabled learners in the Eco-Clubs at a resource-poor primary school to identify and undertake transformative pro-environmental initiatives in 2011 and 2014 through Self-Directed Education (SDE). An educative approach encouraging critical thinking at the school provided the foundation that made this possible. In discussing and working through their strategies to undertake research and challenge authorities about noncompliance in regard to municipal responsibilities that led to environmental degradation, Eco-Club members liaised freely with teachers and other learners. This process, together with local support for the eco-school initiatives, stimulated widespread interest and generated hope among learners by showing that another way of being is possible.

AbstractMost national and international discussions have not seriously recognized the role religio-cultural practices of indigenous Africans can play in mitigating the effects of climate change. This paper, examines the contribution the indigenous people can make towards the mitigation of the effects of climate change, using the Akan of Ghana as a case study. Mostly, indigenous people who are the major stakeholders in land use in Ghana are marginalized when policies aimed at reducing environmental degradation are made. This has resulted in low gains in the fight against environmental degradation despite several interventions in Ghana. A recent report puts Ghana into a net-emitter of GHG bracket. This means the country has to embark on a Low Carbon Development Strategy to address the situation. This paper, therefore argues that unless indigenous people—major stakeholders of land use—are duly involved; it will be difficult to address the effects of climate change in Ghana.
