Network dynamics on the Chinese air transportation multilayer network

Air transportation networks play important roles in human mobility. In this paper, from the perspective of multilayer network mechanism, the dynamics of the Chinese air transportation network are extensively investigated. A multilayer-based passengers re-scheduling model is introduced, and a multilayer cooperation (MC) approach is proposed to improve the efficiency of network traffic under random failures. We use two metrics: the success rate and the extra transfer number, to evaluate the efficiency of re-scheduling. It is found that a higher success rate of passengers re-scheduling can be obtained by MC, and MC is stronger for resisting the instability of the capacity of links. Furthermore, the explosion of the number of extra transfer can be well restrained by MC. Our work will highlight a better understanding of the dynamics and robustness of the Chinese air transportation network.

The air transportation network across a certain area, a typical multilayer complex system, is composed of a number of individual airlines, each of which forms a single layer. A central problem in airline merging is the minimal number of layers, denoted by [Formula: see text], that is needed for the merged network to function nearly as well as the fully aggregated network. For this purpose, we monitor several structural measures during the network aggregation process in which [Formula: see text] is gradually increased. For China Air Transportation Network (CATN), we identify a common, sharp transition point yielding [Formula: see text]. Whereas, for European Air Transportation Networks (EATN) there is no clear signal of such a transition point. The transition point of CATN is confirmed by means of the Wasserstein distance and the relative entropy. Our results indicate that there is still room in the optimization of CATN while for EATN, it seems better to keep the present structure.

For a wide range of transportation network path search problems, the A* heuristic significantly reduces both search effort and running time when compared to basic label-setting algorithms. The motivation for this research was to determine if additional savings could be attained by further experimenting with refinements to the A* approach. We propose a best neighbor heuristic improvement to the A* algorithm that yields additional benefits by significantly reducing the search effort on sparse networks. The level of reduction in running time improves as the average outdegree of the network decreases and the number of paths sought increases.

Abstract The identification of key nodes plays an important role in improving the robustness of the transportation network. For different types of transportation networks, the effect of the same identification method may be different. It is of practical significance to study the key nodes identification methods corresponding to various types of transportation networks. Based on the knowledge of complex networks, the metro networks and the bus networks are selected as the objects, and the key nodes are identified by the node degree identification method, the neighbor node degree identification method, the weighted k-shell degree neighborhood identification method (KSD), the degree k-shell identification method (DKS), and the degree k-shell neighborhood identification method (DKSN). Take the network efficiency and the largest connected subgraph as the effective indicators. The results show that the KSD identification method that comprehensively considers the elements has the best recognition effect and has certain practical significance.

When the robustness of a public service system design is tested, we can often use scenarios where possible random failures can occur and they can influence the time the service is accessible which is provided for system users. The construction of a suitable scenario is based on the choice of links of the transportation network which influence the system performance in a substantial way. In such scenarios one or multiple arcs can be affected by this failure. In our contribution we present characteristics of pairs of critical arcs that can be used to develop an algorithm for the creation of critical scenarios.

Resumo: A crise sanitária ocasionada pela Covid-19 tem demonstrado que o novo coronavírus não acomete apenas as vias mais distantes do pulmão humano, mas também os fluxos da economia mundializada. Neste artigo analisamos as consequências do novo coronavírus na rede de transporte aéreo no primeiro semestre de 2020 a partir de uma abordagem multiescalar. Os procedimentos metodológicos basearam-se em coleta de dados do fluxo de transporte aéreo e de informações referentes a casos de Covid-19 em localidades selecionadas. As principais bases de dados utilizadas foram a Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC), a International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) e relatórios de concessionárias de aeroportos. A análise leva a refletir sobre a dependência das corporações, especialmente de grandes companhias aéreas, às ações do Estado e revela um sistema de espoliação (e de pilhagem) ainda mais agressivo e articulado em tempos de crise como essa ocasionada e/ou agravada pela Covid-19.
