The charm quark has unique properties that make it a very important probe of many facets of the Standard Model. New experimental information on charm decays is becoming available from dedicated experiments at charm factories, and through charm physics programs at the b-factories and hadron machines. In parallel, theorists are working on matrix element calculations based on unquenched lattice QCD, that can be validated by experimental measurements and affect our ultimate knowledge of the quark mixing parameters. Recent predictions are compared with corresponding experimental data and good agreement is found. Charm decays can also provide unique new physics signatures; the status of present searches is reviewed. Finally, charm data relevant for improving beauty decay measurements are presented.

We review the status of rare decays and CP violation in extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze the determination of the unitarity triangle and the model-independent constraints on new physics that can be derived from this analysis. We find stringent bounds on new contributions to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mixing, pointing either to models of minimal flavour violation or to models with new sources of flavour and CP violation in b → s transitions. We discuss the status of the universal unitarity triangle in minimal flavour violation, and study rare decays in this class of models. We then turn to supersymmetric models with nontrivial mixing between second and third generation squarks, discuss the present constraints on this mixing and analyze the possible effects on CP violation in b → s nonleptonic decays and on [Formula: see text] mixing. We conclude presenting an outlook on Lepton-Photon 2009.

Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is a major upgrade of the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− collider at the KEK. The experiment will focus on the search for new physics beyond the standard model via high precision measurement of heavy flavor decays and search for rare signals. In this talk, we present the status of the SuperKEKB collider and the Belle II detector.

CP violation in charm decays is expected to be very small in the Standard Model, at the level of 0.1% or less. A sizable excess of CP violation with respect to the Standard Model predictions could be a signature of new physics. We report on recent searches for CP violation in charm meson decays at BABAR and Belle experiments. In particular we report a lifetime ratio analysis of D0 → K+K−, π+π− with respect to D0 → K−π+ decays, which is sensitive to [Formula: see text] mixing and CP violation. We report also on searches for CPV in the 3-body D+ → K+K−π+ decay and for decay modes with a [Formula: see text] in the final state, such as [Formula: see text].

The role of charm in testing the Standard Model description of quark mixing and CP violation through measurements of lifetimes, decay constants and semileptonic form factors is reviewed. Together with Lattice QCD, charm has the potential this decade to maximize the sensitivity of the entire flavor physics program to new physics and pave the way for understanding physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC in the coming decade. The status of indirect searches for physics beyond the Standard Model through charm mixing, CP-violation and rare decays is also reported.

Mixing in the D0 system may provide a sensitive probe for new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) but has so far eluded experimental observation. The SM predictions are typically small (< 10-3) for the mixing parameters x, y which, in the absence of charge-parity (CP) symmetry violation, measure the mass (x = Δ m/Γ) and lifetime (y = ΔΓ/2Γ) difference of the CP eigenstates in the D0 system. The asymmetric B-factory experiments BABAR and Belle open up the opportunity of measuring x, y with unprecedented statistical precision and sample purities. Results from BABAR and Belle, and from CLEO are reviewed.

AbstractWe study radiative charm decays $$D \rightarrow P_1 P_2 \gamma $$ D → P 1 P 2 γ , $$P_{1,2}=\pi ,K$$ P 1 , 2 = π , K in QCD factorization at leading order and within heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. Branching ratios including resonance contributions are around $$\sim 10^{-3}$$ ∼ 10 - 3 for the Cabibbo-favored modes into $$K \pi \gamma $$ K π γ and $$\sim 10^{-5}$$ ∼ 10 - 5 for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed modes into $$\pi ^+ \pi ^- \gamma , K^+ K^- \gamma $$ π + π - γ , K + K - γ , and thus in reach of the flavor factories BES III and Belle II. Dalitz plots and forward–backward asymmetries reveal significant differences between the two QCD frameworks; such observables are therefore ideally suited for a data-driven identification of relevant decay mechanisms in the standard-model dominated $$D \rightarrow K \pi \gamma $$ D → K π γ decays. This increases the potential to probe new physics with the $$D \rightarrow \pi ^+ \pi ^- \gamma $$ D → π + π - γ and $$D \rightarrow K^+ K^- \gamma $$ D → K + K - γ decays, which are sensitive to enhanced dipole operators. CP asymmetries are useful to test the SM and look for new physics in neutral $$|\Delta C|=1$$ | Δ C | = 1 transitions. Cuts in the Dalitz plot enhance the sensitivity to new physics due to the presence of both s- and t, u-channel intermediate resonances.

The status of searches for new particles and new physics during the past year at the Fermilab Tevatron, at HERA and at LEP is summarized. A discussion of the hints for the Standard Model Higgs boson from LEP2 data is presented. Searches for non-Standard Model Higgs bosons are also described. Many searches have been carried out for the particles predicted by supersymmetry theories, and a sampling of these is given. There have also been searches for flavor changing neutral currents in the interactions of the top quark. In addition, searches for excited leptons, leptoquarks and technicolor are summarized.

LHCb continues to expand its world-leading sample of charmed hadrons collected during LHCs Run 1 (2010-2012) and Run 2 (2015-present). This sample is yielding some of the most stringent tests of the Standard Model understanding of charm physics. This includes precise measurements of the neutral D-meson mixing parameters and some of the most sensitive searches for direct and indirect CP violation in charm interactions.
