Metrics for Concept-Oriented Knowledge Bases

Metrics are widely researched and used in software engineering; however there is little analogous work in the field of knowledge engineering. In other words, there are no widely-known metrics that the developers of knowledge bases can use to monitor and improve their work. In this paper we adapt the GQM (Goals-Questions-Metrics) methodology that is used to select and develop software metrics. We use the methodology to develop a series of metrics that measure the size and complexity of concept-oriented knowledge bases. Two of the metrics measure raw size; seven measure various aspects of complexity on scales of 0 to 1, and are shown to be largely independent of each other. The remaining three are compound metrics that combine aspects of the other nine in an attempt to measure the overall 'difficulty' or 'complexity' of a knowledge base. The metrics have been implemented and tested in the context of a knowledge management system called CODE4.

This paper presents a knowledge evaluation and evolution in a knowledge management system by using a Semantic Wiki approach. The authors describe a Semantic Wiki called WikiDesign which is a component of a Knowledge Management system. Currently WikiDesign is used in engineering departments of companies to emphasize technical knowledge. This study explains how WikiDesign ensures the reliability of the knowledge base thanks to a knowledge evaluation process. After explaining the interest of the use of semantic wikis in knowledge management approach, the architecture of WikiDesign with its semantic functionalities is described. The effectiveness of WikiDesign is proved with a knowledge evaluation example for an industrial project.

Abstract.Nowadays, the concept of Knowledge Management is gradually being recognized in governmental establishments which are seeking to deploy their own knowledge management system and make the most of their existing knowledge in policymaking, by creating and maintaining a competitive advantage in the domestic and international environment. For an organisation, the intellectual assets and individual knowledge are as important as the other physical and financial assets. Knowledge is a primary resource featured to provide a competitive advantage to any organization that recognises and incorporates it efficiently in its processes. This article aims to review the value of knowledge management, the pillars by describing its cycle and highlighting its importance for governmental organisations. The obstacles and difficulties of implementing and deploying knowledge management in government organisations with suggested solutions that are also discussed. In conclusion, recommendations for decision makers are presented to enhance the efficiency of the knowledge management implementation and scale up the gain of a lasting competitive advantage within national and international environments.

Abstract This paper presents a unique E&P knowledge management system which has been widely accepted and applied by upstream petroleum industry. This knowledge management system started in mid-1990s and consists of standard static and dynamic knowledge base, comprehensive evaluation reports, and fit-for-purpose analytics tools applicable to the entire E&P lifecycle. Emphasis is placed on illustrating the breadth and depth of the E&P knowledge and advanced analytics in terms of their capturing and applications in field development and production. This knowledge base consists of >1600 reservoirs from around the world, each containing ~400 reservoir-level static parameters and a set of dynamic performance data. The static parameter covers reservoir characteristics, fluid properties, original in-place volume, EUR, recovery factor, production-related data (such as well spacing, well pattern, well EUR et al.), reservoir management practices, and key IORs/EORs and their incremental recovery. The knowledge extraction process involves collecting, reviewing, and synthesizing geologic, reservoir engineering and production data on a representative sample of global reservoirs. The reliable, coherent, high-quality knowledge base provides a foundation for the development of primary recovery index using supervised machine learning. Insights and intelligence derived from this knowledge base are critical to decision-making for both initial or early field development and production stages. The development application includes, but not limited to: (1) quantifying in-place volume, EUR, and recovery factor; (2) characterizing possible production performance and uncertainties and obtaining a conceptual production performance curve; (3) validating development plan options; and (4) benchmarking reservoir simulation results. The production application includes: (1) benchmarking production performance; (2) identifying upside potential and improved oil recovery opportunities; (3) finding best practices and lessons learned in reservoir management and secondary recovery practice; and (4) screening EOR methods, calibrating potential incremental recovery and characterizing EOR process performance. Lack of knowledge standardization and absence of coherence of data from various data sources are the main challenges facing industry's data-driven application. The knowledge management system presented in this study provides the most reliable knowledge base, advanced analytics tools, and practical application workflow to help the upstream industry become more efficient in applying collective human intelligence.

This abstract deals with mentoring as one of the most popular forms of knowledge-sharing nowadays. On one hand the authors give a theoretical introduction about the protocol, the types, and the participants and about the realization of mentoring; while on the other hand some results of a complex research are also shown. The research was carried out with the participation of Hungarian companies and employees, both in qualitative and in quantitative way. Although the researches cannot be considered representative, the authors of the chapter reckon that a clear view can be obtained about the Hungarian mentoring practice. In light of the results it can be stated that the respondents basically consider this form of knowledge-sharing useful, which provides a good base and support for the operation of a consistent knowledge-management system and mentoring should represent positive values and practice in this process.

Information technology is increasingly developing and has a positive impact on the world of education. The implementation of student counseling with a Knowledge Management System is one of the contributions of information technology in the world of education. Many benefits provided by the Student Counseling Knowledge Management System, in managing the knowledge needed by the counselor section to document student consultations. The development and implementation of a KMS counseling system costs more to employ professional staff to maintain and improve; KMS student counseling application; For this reason, it is necessary to design a Cloud Computing-based Student Counseling Knowledge Management System. The research method carried out in the first stage is to collect data and information about Knowledge Management and Student Counseling, and how to use it to create a Knowledge Management System Application, Student Counseling Based on cloud computing. Furthermore, conducting a literature study and literature review, system design is in the form of data architecture compounding, process design, network design, and user interface design. The design results of this system can facilitate educational institutions in conducting online cloud computing-based student counseling
