A Surface-Integral Formulation for Jet Noise Prediction Based on the Pressure Signal Alone

While large-scale simulation of jet noise is the most thorough technique currently available for jet noise prediction, three-dimensional direct computation of both the near and far field requires prohibitive computational capability. In this work we propose to limit large-scale simulation to the near field to provide the pressure distribution over a cylindrical surface surrounding the jet. A surface-integral formulation is presented herein in which the calculated pressure on the cylindrical surface is used to obtain the far-field sound, without the need for the normal derivative of the pressure. The results are compared to that of direct large-scale simulation and to the zonal approach in which linearized Euler equations are used as an extension tool.

In this work we propose replacing the conventional flat-surface airframe that shields the engine by a wavy surface. The basic principle is to design a wavy pattern to reflect the incoming near-field flow and acoustic perturbations into waves of a particular dominant frequency. The reflected waves will then excite the corresponding frequency of the large-scale structure in the initial region of the jet’s shear layer. By designing the frequency of the reflected waves to be the harmonic of the fundamental frequency that corresponds to the radiated peak noise, the two frequency-modes interact nonlinearly. With the appropriate phase difference, the harmonic dampens the fundamental as it extracts energy from it to amplify. The outcome is a reduction in the peak noise. To evaluate this concept, we conducted Detached Eddy Simulations for a rectangular supersonic jet with and without the wavy shield and verified our numerical results with experimental data for a free jet, as well as, for a jet with an adjacent flat surface. Results show that the proposed wavy surface reduces the jet noise as compared to that of the corresponding flat surface by as much as 4 dB.

Many configurations proposed for the next generation of aircraft rely on the wing or other aircraft surfaces to shield the engine noise from the observers on the ground. However, the ability to predict the shielding effect and any new noise sources that arise from the high-speed jet flow interacting with a hard surface is currently limited. Furthermore, quality experimental data from jets with surfaces nearby suitable for developing and validating noise prediction methods are usually tied to a particular vehicle concept and, therefore, very complicated. The Jet-Surface Interaction Tests are intended to supply a high quality set of data covering a wide range of surface geometries and positions and jet flows to researchers developing aircraft noise prediction tools. The initial goal is to measure the noise of a jet near a simple planar surface while varying the surface length and location in order to: (1) validate noise prediction schemes when the surface is acting only as a jet noise shield and when the jet-surface interaction is creating additional noise, and (2) determine regions of interest for future, more detailed, tests. To meet these objectives, a flat plate was mounted on a two-axis traverse in two distinct configurations: (1) as a shield between the jet and the observer and (2) as a reflecting surface on the opposite side of the jet from the observer. The surface length was varied between 2 and 20 jet diameters downstream of the nozzle exit. Similarly, the radial distance from the jet centerline to the surface face was varied between 1 and 16 jet diameters. Far-field and phased array noise data were acquired at each combination of surface length and radial location using two nozzles operating at jet exit conditions across several flow regimes: subsonic cold, subsonic hot, underexpanded, ideally expanded, and overexpanded supersonic. The far-field noise results, discussed here, show where the jet noise is partially shielded by the surface and where jet-surface interaction noise dominates the low frequency spectrum as a surface extends downstream and approaches the jet plume.

The affordable grid resolutions in conventional large-eddy simulations (LESs) of high Reynolds jet flows are unable to capture the sound generated by fluid motions near and beyond the grid cut-off scale. As a result, the frequency spectrum of the extrapolated sound field is artificially truncated at high frequencies. In this paper, a new method is proposed to account for the high frequency noise sources beyond the resolution of a compressible flow simulation. The large-scale turbulent structures as dominant radiators of sound are captured in LES, satisfying filtered Navier–Stokes equations, while for small-scale turbulence, a Kolmogorov's turbulence spectrum is imposed. The latter is performed via a wavelet-based extrapolation to add randomly generated small-scale noise sources to the LES near-field data. Further, the vorticity and instability waves are filtered out via a passive wavelet-based masking and the whole spectrum of filtered data are captured on a Ffowcs-Williams/Hawkings (FW-H) surface surrounding the near-field region and are projected to acoustic far-field. The algorithm can be implemented as a separate postprocessing stage and it is observed that the computational time is considerably reduced utilizing a hybrid of many-core and multi-core framework, i.e. MPI-CUDA programming. The comparison of the results obtained from this procedure and those from experiments for high subsonic and transonic jets, shows that the far-field noise spectrum agree well up to 2 times of the grid cut-off frequency.

An anisotropic component of the jet noise source model for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation-based jet noise prediction method is proposed. The modelling is based on Goldstein's generalized acoustic analogy, and both the fine-scale and large-scale turbulent noise sources are considered. To model the anisotropic characteristics of jet noise source, the Reynolds stress tensor is used in place of the turbulent kinetic energy. The Launder–Reece–Rodi model (LRR), combined with Menter's ω -equation for the length scale, with modified coefficients developed by the present authors, is used to calculate the mean flow velocities and Reynolds stresses accurately. Comparison between predicted results and acoustic data has been carried out to verify the accuracy of the new anisotropic source model. In this article, four observation points are selected in the flow field when predicting aerodynamic noise of a multi-element airfoil for both a coarser grid and a finer grid. Numerical simulation of N-S equations is employed to obtain near-field acoustic information, then far-field acoustic information is obtained through acoustic analogy theory combined with FW-H equation. Computation indicates: the codes calculate the flow field in good agreement with the experimental data; The finer the grid is, the more stable the calculated sound pressure level (SPL) is and the more regularly d(SPL)/d(St) varies.

Model scale tests are conducted to assess the Noise/Performance trade for high speed jet noise reduction technologies. It is demonstrated that measuring the near field acoustic signature with a microphone array can be used to assess the far field noise using a procedure known as acoustic holography. The near field noise measurement is mathematically propagated producing an estimate of the noise level at the new location. Outward propagation produces an estimate of the far field noise. Propagation toward the jet axis produces the source distribution. Tests are conducted on convergent/divergent nozzles with three different area ratios, and several different chevron geometries. Noise is characterized by two independent processes: Shock cell noise radiating in the forward quadrant is produced when the nozzle is operated at non-ideally expanded conditions. Mach wave radiation propagates into the aft quadrant when the exhaust temperature is elevated. These results show good agreement with actual far field measurements from tests in the GE Cell 41 Acoustic Test Facility. Simultaneous performance measurement shows the change in thrust coefficient for different test conditions and configurations. Chevrons attached to the nozzle exit can reduce the noise by several dB at the expense of a minimal thrust loss.

The shrinking reserves of fossil fuels in combination with the increasing energy demand have enhanced the interest in renewable energy sources, including wave energy. In order to extract a considerable amount of wave power, large numbers of Wave Energy Converters will have to be arranged in arrays or farms using a particular geometrical layout. The operational behaviour of a single device may have a positive or negative effect on the power absorption of the neighbouring WECs in the farm (near-field effects). Moreover, as a result of the interaction between the WECs within a farm, the overall power absorption and the wave climate in the lee of the WECs is modified, which may influence neighbouring farms, other users in the sea or even the coastline (far-field effects). Several numerical studies on large WEC arrays have already been performed, but large scale experimental studies on near-field and far-field wake effects of large WEC arrays are not available in literature. Within the HYDRALAB IV European programme, the research project WECwakes has been introduced to perform large scale experiments in the Shallow Water Wave Basin of DHI, in Denmark, on large arrays of point absorbers for different layout configurations and inter-WEC spacings. The aim is to validate and further develop the applied numerical methods, as well as to optimize the geometrical layout of WEC arrays for real applications.
