The evaluation of the economic value of the ecological environment can provide a vigorous support for protecting the ecological environment. The authors introduce several methods for the evaluation of economic value that are commonly used in the international community and their relevant applications; these include two methods for the evaluation of market value — the averting behavior/preventive expenditure method and the replacement cost/restoration cost method — as well as four methods for the evaluation of non-market value — the contingent valuation method, the choice experiment method, the hedonic price method and the travel cost method; moreover, they also introduce the application of the usually overlooked differential land rent theory in this field. Though these methods are widely applied, many matters need to be noted. At present, domestic research on evaluating the economic value of urban and suburban ecological environments remains extremely scarce. Regarding the preparation of the natural resource balance sheet that China is attempting to compile, only the overall economic value of the ecological environment across the country or in a specific large region is meaningful. The application of the methods for the evaluation of economic value in analyzing these issues can bring about many valuable research achievements. A combination of the mainstream foreign value evaluation methods with the Marxist differential land rent theory is conducive to evaluating the overall economic value of the ecological environment.

AbstractHeritage buildings incorporate multiple values (architectural, historical, cultural, aesthetic, social, symbolic, authenticity value) to which the economic one (they can be used as commercial and residential spaces, or it can offer cultural experiences for tourists) is added. The cultural services generated by the heritage properties are also used by the local population. The aim of this paper is to analyse the economic values of use and non-use of heritage properties in the central area of Ploieşti Municipality. The authors used the contingent valuation method to identify the non-used economic value. The economic use value of heritage properties was estimated by using the hedonic price method (e.g. expressed in accessibility from homes to shops on foot). Moreover, the economic value was evaluated using the indicator types of use of the heritage buildings. The results obtained by using the non-market valuation highlight the economic potential of the heritage properties located in the central area of Ploieşti city.

A study on the sustainable management framework and the economic value evaluation for Taiwan Reservoir Watershed Recently lack of sustainable management for the reservoir watershed becomes a predicament for the water issues in Taiwan. The study tried to recognize the framework of the sustainable management of the Taiwan reservoir watershed and its key factors by using the analytic hierarchy process and the Delphi method. Through the identification questionnaires and the CVM (contingent valuation method), it also discussed the gap of expert and public for the identification of satisfaction, environmental protection and the potential value for the recent reservoir watershed. However, the results showed that the "natural stability" is the significant factor in the first level and the "Nature resources conservation" and "Water storage amount" are the most important factors for the detailed level. In addition, the expert opinions were not proved by public identification, and the present governance budgets are too low to respond to the potential values of public expectancy.

Based on the concept of a livable and global age-friendly city, pavements are a public facility that the city should provide to the people. Appropriate pavements will be beneficial for the people, particularly for good quality of life for the elderly to move around in the city. This study explored the behaviour of the elderly in the use of pavements and the problems confronted. The study also evaluated the value of the pavement walking area as it reflected the benefits of pavements to the elderly by applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). During March-May 2017, data were collected using interviews with 601 elderly living in Bangkok. The study indicated that the main problem for senior citizens regarding their use of pavements was from being disturbed by motorbikes riding on the pavements. The average value of pavement for the elderly was about THB 160 (USD 5.30) per person per year. Thus, the benefits of pavements to the elderly in Bangkok was approximately THB 158 million (USD 5.2 million) per year. Thus, policy makers should make proper budget allocations for elderly-friendly pavement management and seriously address the problems confronting the elderly in using pavements, to maximize the usefulness of pavements not only for the elderly but also for the public and to support a sustainable urban development.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic value of Geomun Oreum (GO), a parasitic volcanic sieve, for sustainable management by using the dichotomous choice contingent valuation method. To address the exaggeration tendency of willingness to pay (WTP), the contingent valuation method’s (CVM’s) traditional threshold, respondents’ WTP answers were reconfirmed to screen only true responses for our analysis. In addition to estimating the economic value, the causal relationship between the tour guide’s quality of explanation and the respondents’ payment intention is examined in the study. The results reveal that the estimated preservation value of GO is 35,881 KRW (33.28 USD), and the quality of the tour guide’s narrative is statistically related to the respondents’ payment intention.

This paper applied Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to estimate the recreational value of Urban Park— “219 park”. The economic value analysis of recreational activities will technically enrich the connotation of part management, which can benefit the transition of recreational activities and resource management from extensive to intensive; by compared the two results, it will also provide a important references on rules and measures for government and relevant authorities.

Aim of study: To estimate grazing fee and the economic value of the communal rangelands of two groups of ranchers. Area of study: Ejido Tanque de Arenas (ETA) and ejido Tanque de Dolores (ETD) in Catorce, San Luis Potosí, Mexico Material and methods: The contingent valuation method with referendum format was used to propose a grazing fee that would allow conservation and continuity in the use of the common resource. The field information was collected by interviews and was processed in the PASW Statistics 22 software NLOGIT Version 5.0. Main results: Perception of rangeland deterioration, age, size of the herd, and level of income are characteristics of ranchers that influence the willingness to pay. From the coefficient of rangeland of the region (24.2 ha/AU) a monthly grazing fee of USD 7.18 per animal was calculated. Research highlights: Estimation and payment of grazing fees are an alternative to avoid the deterioration of communal rangelands, without incurring land parcelization.
