Gas transport in a model derived from Hansen-Ampaya anatomical data of the human lung

The anatomical data of the human lung published by Hansen and Ampaya are used in a model of gas transport in the lung. The Bohr dead space is calculated from solutions of a transport equation where diffusivity is given by an empirical formula obtained by Sherer et al. A satisfactory agreement is found with experimental data obtained from simultaneous washouts of H2 and SF6 for respiratory frequencies ranging between 15 and 60 min-1 and tidal volumes between 200 and 1,800 ml. The results support the idea that molecular diffusion is the main but not the only physical phenomenom which intervenes in gas mixing during breathing.

Complete physiological understanding of HFV requires knowledge of four general classes of information: 1) the distribution of airflow within the lung over a wide range of frequencies and VT (sect. IVA), 2) an understanding of the basic mechanisms whereby the local airflows lead to gas transport (sect. IVB), 3) a computational or theoretical model in which transport mechanisms are cast in such a form that they can be used to predict overall gas transport rates (sect. IVC), and 4) an experimental data base (sect. VI) that can be compared to model predictions. When compared with available experimental data, it becomes clear that none of the proposed models adequately describes all the experimental findings. Although the model of Kamm et al. is the only one capable of simulating the transition from small to large VT (as compared to dead-space volume), it fails to predict the gas transport observed experimentally with VT less than equipment dead space. The Fredberg model is not capable of predicting the observed tendency for VT to be a more important determinant of gas exchange than is frequency. The remaining models predict a greater influence of VT than frequency on gas transport (consistent with experimental observations) but in their current form cannot simulate the additional gas exchange associated with VT in excess of the dead-space volume nor the decreased efficacy of HFV above certain critical frequencies observed in both animals and humans. Thus all of these models are probably inadequate in detail. One important aspect of these various models is that some are based on transport experiments done in appropriately scaled physical models, whereas others are entirely theoretical. The experimental models are probably most useful in the prediction of pulmonary gas transport rates, whereas the physical models are of greater value in identifying the specific transport mechanism(s) responsible for gas exchange. However, both classes require a knowledge of the factors governing the distribution of airflow under the circumstances of study as well as requiring detail about lung anatomy and airway physical properties. Only when such factors are fully understood and incorporated into a general description of gas exchange by HFV will it be possible to predict or explain all experimental or clinical findings.

Intrapulmonary gas mixing by convection and diffusion is analyzed on the basis of various analog lung models incorporating singly or in combination series inhomogeneity, parallel inhomogeneity, intercompartmental diffusion, sequential inspiration, and sequential expiration. The slope of the alveolar plateau of insoluble gases is used as an indicator for incomplete gas mixing. By use of the models, we have attempted to simulate experimental results obtained in artificially ventilated dog lungs with simultaneous single-breath washout of He and SF6 (Meyer et al., J. Appl. Physiol. 55: 1795–1802, 1983). Sufficient agreement with experimental data is obtained only when diffusion between serial-parallel compartments and sequential expiration are incorporated, the first being mainly responsible for separation of He and SF6, the latter for the slope of the alveolar plateau of these gases. A combined operational model comprising two parallel compartments connected to a mixing compartment, with both convective and diffusive gas transport between the compartments, could account for most of the experimental observations.

The semiempirical SCF–LCAO–MO method of Pariser–Parr–Pople is utilized in the study of the π-electronic structures of thiophene, furan, and pyrrole. The core Hamiltonian expansion contains a Uz++ term, the potential due to the ionized hetero-atom contributing two electrons to the π-system. The γzz, one-center coulomb repulsion integral for the hetero-atom is evaluated from the experimental spectroscopic data only. With the resonance integral βczc as the only variable parameter, the calculated π*–π electronic transitions are in a satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.

The significance of convective and diffusive gas transport in the respiratory system was assessed from the response of combined inert gas and particle boluses inhaled into the conducting airways. Particles, considered as “nondiffusing gas,” served as tracers for convection and two inert gases with widely different diffusive characteristics (He and SF6) as tracers for convection and diffusion. Six-milliliter boluses labeled with monodisperse di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate droplets of 0.86-microns aerodynamic diameter, 2% He, and 2% SF6 were inspired by three anesthetized mechanically ventilated beagle dogs to volumetric lung depths up to 170 ml. Mixing between inspired and residual air caused dispersion of the inspired bolus, which was quantified in terms of the bolus half-width. Dispersion of particles increased with increasing lung depth to which the boluses were inhaled. The increase followed a power law with exponents less than 0.5 (mean 0.39), indicating that the effect of convective mixing per unit volume was reduced with depth. Within the pulmonary dead space, the behavior of the inert gases He and SF6 was similar to that of the particles, suggesting that gas transport was almost solely due to convection. Beyond the dead space, dispersion of He and SF6 increased more rapidly than dispersion of particles, indicating that diffusion became significant. The gas and particle bolus technique offers a suitable approach to differential analysis of gas transport in intrapulmonary airways of lungs.

This paper describes in detail the assessment of the CFD code CFX to predict adiabatic liquid-gas two-phase bubbly flow. This study has been divided into two parts. In the first exercise, the effect of Lift Force, Wall Force and the Turbulent Diffusion Force have been assessed using experimental data from the literature for air-water upward bubbly flows through a pipe. The data used here had a characteristic near wall void peaking which was largely influenced by the joint action of the three forces mentioned above. The simulations were performed with constant bubble diameter assuming no bubble interactions. This exercise resulted in selection of the most appropriate closure form and closure coefficients for the above mentioned forces for the range of flow conditions chosen. In the second exercise, the One-Group Interfacial Area Transport equation was introduced in the two-fluid model of CFX. The interfacial area density plays important role in the correct prediction of interfacial mass, momentum and energy transfer and is affected by bubble breakup and coalescence processes in adiabatic flows. The One-Group Interfacial Area Transport Equation (IATE) has been developed and implemented for one-dimensional models and validated using cross-sectional area averaged experimental data over the last decade by various researchers. The original one-dimensional model has been extended to multidimensional flow predictions in this study and the results are presented in this paper. The paper also discusses constraints posed by the commercial CFD code CFX and the solutions worked out to obtain the most accurate implementation of the model.

In this paper, a new third-order Lagrangian asymptotic solution describing nonlinear water wave propagation on the surface of a uniform sloping bottom is presented. The model is formulated in the Lagrangian variables and we use a two-parameter perturbation method to develop a new mathematical derivation. The particle trajectories, wave pressure and Lagrangian velocity potential are obtained as a function of the nonlinear wave steepness  and the bottom slope  perturbed to third order. The analytical solution in Lagrangian form satisfies state of the normal pressure at the free surface. The condition of the conservation of mass flux is examined in detail for the first time. The two important properties in Lagrangian coordinates, Lagrangian wave frequency and Lagrangian mean level, are included in the third-order solution. The solution can also be used to estimate the mean return current for waves progressing over the sloping bottom. The Lagrangian solution untangle the description of the features of wave shoaling in the direction of wave propagation from deep to shallow water, as well as the process of successive deformation of a wave profile and water particle trajectories leading to wave breaking. The proposed model has proved to be capable of a better description of non-linear wave effects than the corresponding approximation of the same order derived by using the Eulerian description. The proposed solution has also been used to determine the wave shoaling process, and the comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results are presented in Fig.1a~1b. In addition, the basic wave-breaking criterion, namely the kinematical Stokes stability condition, has been investigated. The comparisons between the present theory, empirical formula of Goda (2004) and the experiments made by Iwagali et al.(1974), Deo et al.(2003) and Tsai et al.(2005) for the breaking index(Hb/L0) versus the relative water depth(d0/L0) under two different bottom slopes are depicted in Figs 2a~2b. It is found that the theoretical breaking index is well agreement with the experimental results for three bottom slopes. However,for steep slope of 1/3 shown in Fig 2b, the result of Goda‘s empirical formula gives a larger value in comparison with the experimental data and the present theory. Some of empirical formulas presented the breaking wave height in terms of deepwater wave condition, such as in Sunamura (1983) and in Rattanapitikon and Shibayama(2000). Base on the results depicted in Fig. 3a~3b, it showed that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data (Iwagali et al. 1974, Deo et al.2003 and Tsai et al. 2005) than the empirical formulas. The empirical formula of Sunamura (1983) always predicts an overestimation value.

Photofission of [Formula: see text]Th, [Formula: see text]U, [Formula: see text]Np and [Formula: see text]Pu isotopes are investigated. Modified version of Gorodisskiy approach that is developed to study the neutron-induced fission are employed to simulate fission fragment mass distribution for these isotopes in different energies. The effect of emitted neutron prior to scission point is studied. Peak to valley ratio is also extracted. Obtained results using this approach are compared with original Gorodisskiy model as well as available experimental data. Satisfactory agreement is achieved between theoretical and experimental data especially in medium and low [Formula: see text]-ray energies than original formalism of Gorodisskiy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of the rotor–stator interaction in the vaneless region of a centrifugal pump. Design/methodology/approach A third-order sub-grid scale (SGS) model containing the rotation rate tensor named the dynamic cubic non-linear model (DCNM) is used for simulating the flow field in a centrifugal pump with a vaned diffuser. The pressure coefficient and velocity distributions are compared with the experimental data. Focusing on the vaneless region, the pressure pulsation, Reynolds stress pulsation and Reynolds stress transport equation are analyzed. Findings The comparison of the calculation results with the experimental data indicates that the DCNM can accurately capture the distributions of pressure and velocity in the vaneless region. Based on the instantaneous pressure signals, the pressure pulsation is analyzed to show that in the vaneless region, the dominant frequency near the impeller is twice the blade passing frequency, whereas it is equal to the blade passing frequency near the diffuser. Further exploration of the Reynolds stress pulsation shows the correlation between the two variables. Additionally, the extreme low frequency of Reynolds stress near the diffuser is found to be related to the rotation instability. To explore the turbulence characteristics in the vaneless region, the Reynolds stress transportation equation is studied. In the vaneless region, the rotation term of the Reynolds stress transport equation is negligible compared to the production term, although the rotation instability is obvious near the diffuser. The production of the Reynolds stress plays the role of redistributing the energy from the uu component to the vv component, except for the region near the impeller outlet. Originality/value The third-order SGS model DCNM has proved to be promising in simulating the rotor–stator interaction. The analysis of the rotation instability and the Reynolds stress transport equation shed light on the further understanding of the rotor–stator interaction.
