A new series of transition metal complexes of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) were synthesized from the Schiff base ligand derived from 4-aminoantipyrine, furfural ando-phenylenediamine. The structural features were derived from their elemental analyses, infrared, UV-visible spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analyses, ESR spectral analyses and conductivity measurements. The data of the complexes suggested square planar geometry for the metals with primary valency two. Antimicrobial screening tests were performed against bacteria. The comparative study of the MIC values of the Schiff base and its metal complexes indicate that the metal complexes exhibit greater antibacterial activity than the free ligand.

We report here the synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial evaluation of transition metal complexes of Ni, Cu, Co, Mn, Zn, and Cd (6a–f), using a Schiff base ligand (5) derived from naproxen (an anti-inflammatory drug) and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde by a series of reactions. The ligand and the synthesized complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Visible, FTIR, and XRD techniques. The ligand 5 behaves as a bidentate donor and coordinates with metals in square planar or tetrahedral fashion. In order to evaluate its bioactivity profile, we screened the Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes (6a–f) against different species of bacteria and the complexes were found to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. The complexes showed more potency against Bacillus subtilis as compared to the other species. Moreover, we modeled these complexes’ binding affinity against COX1 protein using computational docking.

A new macrocyclic multidentate Schiff-base ligand Na4L consisting of two submacrocyclic units (10,21-bis-iminomethyl-3,6,14,17-tricyclo[17.3.1.18,12]tetracosa-1(23),2,6,8,10,12(24),13,17,19,21,-decaene-23,24-disodium) and its tetranuclear metal complexes with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) are reported. Na4L was prepared via a template approach, which is based on the condensation reaction of sodium 2,4,6-triformyl phenolate with ethylenediamine in mole ratios of 2 : 3. The tetranuclear macrocyclic-based complexes were prepared from the reaction of the corresponding metal chloride with the ligand. The mode of bonding and overall geometry of the compounds were determined through physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. These studies revealed tetrahedral geometries about Mn, Co, and Zn atoms. However, square planar geometries have been suggested for NiIIand CuIIcomplexes. Biological activity of the ligand and its metal complexes against Gram positive bacterial strainStaphylococcus aureusand Gram negative bacteriaEscherichia colirevealed that the metal complexes become more potentially resistive to the microbial activities as compared to the free ligand. However, these metal complexes do not exhibit any effects on the activity ofPseudomonas aeruginosabacteria. There is therefore no inhibition zone.

Metal complexes of the Schiff base ligand, synthesized via condensation p-dimethylamino benzaldehyde with Bis (4-aminoantipyrine) benzene 1, 4-diamine which has synthesized from condensation 1, 4-phenylene diamine and 4-aminoantipyrine, are synthesized from chloride salts of Co (II) and Ni(II) with ligand in ethanol. The metal complexes and ligand are characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, melting point, molar conductance, UV –Visible, FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis. The molar conductance data reveal that the metal chelates of the ligand with Co (II) and Ni (II) are electrolytes. The present results suggested that the Schiff base ligand as tetradentate is coordinated with metal ions through the four nitrogen atoms.

Two novel quadridentate Schiff base complexes, [NiIILH](ClO4)2・H2O (1) and [CoIIIL]- (ClO4)2・H2O (2) [LH, a Schiff base ligand: Ph(OH)C(Me)=NCH2CH2N(CH2CH2NH2)2] have been synthesised and characterised by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and electrochemical studies. The structures of both have been unequivocally established from single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. 1 and 2 crystallise in the monoclinic space group P21/n having cell parameters a = 8.536(1), b = 13.832(4), c = 18.194(2) Å , β = 100.00(10)°, Z = 4 for 1, and a = 10.819(5), b = 14.301(2), c=14.224(1) Å , β =97.04(2)°, Z =4 for 2. The complexes expose a square planar geometry around the metal centers chelated with three different types of nitrogen donor centers of the ligand.

Two new Schiff and Mannich bases, namely, 1-Morpholinomethyl-3(1′ -N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (LIH) and 1-diphenylaminomethyl-3-1′-N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (LIIH), were prepared from condensation reaction of new Schiff base 3-(1′-N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (SBH) with morpholine or diphenylamine respectively in presence of formaldehyde . The structures were characterized by IR,1HNMR, mass spectrometry, and CHN analyses. Metal complexes of the two ligands were synthesized, and their structures were characterized by elemental analyses, atomic absorption, IR and UV-visible spectra, molar conductivity, and magnetic moment determination. All complexes showed octahedral geometries except palladium complexes which were square planar. The biological activity of the prepared compounds and some selected metal complexes was tested against three types of bacteria and against cell line of human epidermoid larynx carcinoma (Hep-2).

VO(IV), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of the asymmetric Schiff base [(HOC6H3(OCH3)C(C6H5):N(CH2CH2)N:C(CH3)CH:C(C6H5)OH)], and their heteroleptic analogues with triphenyl phosphine and 2,2’-bipyridine have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, conductance, magnetic, infrared and electronic spectral measurements. The ligand is tetradentate coordinatingviathe imine N and enolic O atoms. The Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes adopt a four coordinate square planar geometry, the VO(IV) complex is five coordinate square-pyramidal and the heteroleptic complexes are 6-coordinate, octahedral. The assignment of geometry is collaborated by magnetic moments and electronic spectra measurements. The compounds are non-electrolyte in nitromethane and are magnetically dilute.

New series of copper (II), cobalt (II), zinc (II), nickel (II), manganese (II), iron (II) complexes of a novel Schiff base were prepared by the condensation of sulphadizine and pyridoxal hydrochloride. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by utilizing different instrumental procedures like microanalysis, thermogravimetric examination and spectroscopy. The integrated ligand and transition metal complexes were screened against various bacteria and fungus. The studies demonstrated the enhanced activity of metal complexes against reported microbes when compared with free ligand.

Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) complexes of Schiff base derived from 2-aminophenol and pyrrole-2- carbaldehyde have been prepared. The complexes are formed by coordination of N and O atoms of the ligand. Their structures were characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. Molecular structure of the complexes has been optimized by MM2 calculations and suggests a tetrahedral/ square planar geometry. The bio-efficacy of the ligand and their complexes has been examined against the growth of bacteriain vitroto evaluate their anti-microbial potential.
