We describe a simple one-pot water-based scheme to produce gold nanoparticle groupings with short interparticle spacings. This approach combines a cross-linking molecule and a hydrophilic passivation layer to control the level of induced aggregation. Suspensions of dimers and trimers are readily obtained using a single electrophoretic purification step. The final interparticle spacings allow efficient coupling of the particle plasmon modes as verified in extinction spectroscopy.

Colloidal gold nanoparticles have been researched and utilized in many technical applications. However, the conventionalmethods to produce polyethyleneglycol (PEG) immobilized gold nanoparticles have to take several steps, including residual solvent removing. In the study, we propose an idea green route to synthesize gold nanoparticles by using Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in a one-pot reaction. The relationship between Au precursor and S. maltophilia was evaluated systematically. After PEG-SH addition, the bacterial cell wall was broken down and the synthetic nanoparticles could be released into culture medium. Furthermore, we identified that the crystal structure of synthetic gold nanoparticle was face-center cubic and PEG-SH was immobilized on synthetic gold nanoparticle ideally. The size of Au-PEG-SH was smaller than 30 nm. These findings suggest that gold nanoparticle with PEG-SH modification could be prepared in an eco-friendly one-pot reaction through the metabolic activity of S. maltophilia.

Polyamine chelating adsorbents have a good removal effect on dye wastewater. In this study, small molecule triethylenetetramine and macromolecular poly(ethylene imine) were selected as aminated reagent, and two kinds of aminated chitosan microspheres, TETA-CTSms and PEI-CTSms, were obtained by emulsion cross-linking method. The microspheres were fully characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDS and TGA. EDS results showed that the N content of the PEI-CTSms and TETA-CTSms microspheres increased significantly after the cross-linking reaction and can reach 5.7 wt% and 7.3 wt%, respectively. Adsorption experiments confirmed that TETA-CTSms and PEI-CTSms showed greater adsorption characteristics for anionic dye reactive yellow (RY) in aqueous solutions compared with CTSms, and the adsorption capacity per unit area was increased by 39.11% and 88.56%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of aminated microspheres for RY decreased with the increase of pH. The adsorption kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process was in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model. The negative value of Δ G confirmed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, and the dye adsorption was a multiple process dominated by chemical chelating and physical adsorption.
