Previously, for predicting coding regions in nucleotide sequences, a self-adaptive spectral rotation (SASR) method has been developed, based on a universal statistical feature of the coding regions, named triplet periodicity (TP). It outputs a random walk, that is, TP walk, in the complex plane for the query sequence. Each step in the walk is corresponding to a position in the sequence and generated from a long-term statistic of the TP in the sequence. The coding regions (TP intensive) are then visually discriminated from the noncoding ones (without TP), in the TP walk. In this paper, the behaviors of the walks for random nucleotide sequences are further investigated qualitatively. A slightly leftward trend (a negative noise) in such walks is observed, which is not reported in the previous SASR literatures. An improved SASR, named the mature SASR, is proposed, in order to eliminate the noise and correct the TP walks. Furthermore, a potential sequence pattern opposite to the TP persistent pattern, that is, the TP antipersistent pattern, is explored. The applications of the algorithms on simulated datasets show their capabilities in detecting such a potential sequence pattern.

As Diamond-Blackfan anemia shares clinical features with W and Steel defects in mice, we investigated the possibility that this human disorder might result from an abnormality of the c-kit receptor or its ligand, stem cell factor (SCF). For these studies, full nucleotide sequences for coding regions of c-kit and SCF were generated for two Diamond-Blackfan anemia patients and were normal. Similarly, the kds of SCF receptors on their marrow cells (31 pmol/L, 43 pmol/L) were comparable with those found in three normal controls (50 pmol/L, 55 pmol/L, 27 pmol/L). Serum SCF concentrations were 6.9 ng/mL in patient A, 14.6 ng/mL in patient B, who has been in hematologic remission since adolescence, and 2.7 ng/mL in the 3-year-old daughter of patient B, who also has Diamond-Blackfan anemia but is transfusion-dependent. It is possible that the SCF level in patient B increased with puberty, leading to her remission. These data provide evidence that Diamond- Blackfan anemia does not result from structural abnormalities of c-kit or SCF.

This chapter aims to provide a unified theoretical foundation to the term structure of discount rates. To do this the chapter develops a benchmark model based on two assumptions: individual preferences toward risk, and the nature of the uncertainty over economic growth. Previously, it was shown that constant relative risk aversion, combined with a random walk for the growth of log consumption, yields a flat term structure for efficient discount rates. In this chapter, these two assumptions are relaxed by using a stochastic dominance approach. Stochastic models of economic growth with mean-reversion, Markov switches, and parametric uncertainty all exhibit some forms of positive statistical dependence of successive growth rates. Because this tends to magnify the long-term risk, it is the driving force of the decreasing nature of the term structure.

The first four sections are concerned with general reslts, extending recent work on this subject. In Section 5 these are applied to the branching process, and give refinements of several well-known results. The last section deals with the semi-infinite random walk with an absorbing barrier at the origin.

The focus of this study is to understand the previously ignored return generating dynamics of American Depositary Receipts (ADR) markets. The main objective of this study is to investigate the nature of the return generating process of the Indian ADRs market. Specifically, the study addresses following interrelated research questions: Do returns series of Indian ADRs market exhibit random walk behavior or rather depict persistence and nonlinear dynamics? Is there any cyclicity in the returns series of Indian ADRs market? Rescaled Range (R/S) method on daily and weekly return series of Bank of the New York Mellon Indian ADR index (BKIN) from 2002 to 2016 has been applied to address the above questions. Empirical findings revealed that returns series of Indian ADRs market: (a) do not exhibit random walk behavior and rather depict both nonlinear behavior and persistence (long range dependence); (b) possess non-periodic cycles of  0.793, 2.38 and approximately 7 years. The findings can work as crucial inputs to forecasting, risk-management and market regulation processes. The knowledge of the average cycle length and persistence will enhance preparedness to handle the opportunities and risks at all levels in the market.

Structural-statistical characteristics of the coding DNA sequences (CDSs) from human genome are investigated in the frame of spectral-statistical approach (the 2S-approach). Properties of 3-regularity and latent profile periodicity are among of such the characteristics. Special meaning and intrinsic existence of these properties are confirmed by researching the binary recoded CDSs. The only one kind of singular recoding, that identifies complementary nucleotides, serves to persistence of the original CDSs characteristics. Usage of nonsingular binary recoding proves a statement that latent triplet periodicity in the CDSs of human genome belongs to earlier unknown type called as profile periodicity.
