Carbon nanotube/bismuth-selenium-tellurium composites were fabricated by consolidating CNT/Bi2(Se,Te)3composite powders prepared from a polyol-reduction process. The synthesized composite powders exhibit CNTs homogeneously dispersed among Bi2(Se,Te)3matrix nanopowders of 300 nm in size. The powders were densified into a CNT/Bi2(Se,Te)3composite in which CNTs were randomly dispersed in the matrix through spark plasma sintering process. The effect of an addition of Se on the dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT) of the composite was clearly shown in 3 vol.% CNT/Bi2(Se,Te)3composite as compared to CNT/Bi2Te3composite throughout the temperature range of 298 to 473 K. These results imply that matrix modifications such as an addition of Se as well as the incorporation of CNTs into bismuth telluride thermoelectric materials is a promising means of achieving synergistic enhancement of the thermoelectric performance levels of these materials.

Alumina nanoparticle-dispersed bismuth-antimony-tellurium matrix (Al2O3/BST) composite powders were fabricated by using ball milling process of alumina nanoparticle about 10 nm and p-type bismuth telluride nanopowders prepared from the mechanochemical process (MCP). The fabricated Al2O3/BST composite powders were a few hundreds of nanometer in size, with a clear Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3phase. The composite powders were consolidated into p-type bulk composite by spark plasma sintering process. High-resolution TEM images reveal that alumina nanoparticles were dispersed among the grain boundary or in the matrix grain. The sintered 0.3 vol.% Al2O3/BST composite exhibited significantly improved power factor and reduced thermal conductivity in the temperature ranging from 293 to 473 K compared to those of pure BST. From these results, the highly increased ZT value of 1.5 was obtained from 0.3 vol.% Al2O3/BST composite at 323 K.

ABSTRACTThe thermoelectrical properties of α and γ phases of NaxCo2O4 having different amounts of Na were evaluated. The γ NaxCo2O4 samples were synthesized by thermal decomposition in a metal-citric acid compound, and the α NaxCo2O4 samples were synthesized by self-flux processing. Dense bulk ceramics were fabricated using spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the sintered samples were of high density and highly oriented. The thermoelectrical properties showed that γ NaxCo2O4 had higher electrical conductivity and lower thermal conductivity compared with α NaxCo2O4 and that α NaxCo2O4 had a larger Seebeck coefficient. These results show that γ NaxCo2O4 has a larger power factor and dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, than α NaxCo2O4.

Five titanium-based alloys containing 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 wt% molybdenum additive were fabricated by spark plasma sintering process at 1200 ˚C. The samples were scrutinized in terms of relative density, phase evolution, and microstructural development. The relative density reached 99.9% with the molybdenum addition up to 16 wt% but slightly dropped in the sample with 20 wt% additive. In the specimens with 4 wt% Mo, molybdenum solved completely in the matrix and three different phase morphologies were observed, namely continuous α-Ti, laminar α-Ti, and very thin laminar β-Ti. With increasing Mo content to 20 wt%, widespread single β-Ti appeared alongside remained Mo and α-Ti. Ductile fracture mode was dominant in the samples with low Mo contents whilst it changed to brittle in the specimens with higher content of molybdenum.

AbstractThe results of investigation of thermoelectric materials fabricated by spark plasma sintering and based on Si_1 –_ x Ge_ x solid solutions doped with Sb to a concentration of 0–5 at % are presented. It was found that, at Sb concentration below 1 at %, efficient doping of the solid solution was carried out during the sintering process, which allowed us to form a thermoelectric material with a relatively high thermoelectric figure of merit. An increase in the concentration of antimony in the range of 1–5 at % led to a change in the mechanism of doping, which resulted in an increase in the resistance of materials and the segregation of Sb into large clusters. For such materials, a significant decrease in the Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric figure of merit was noted. The highest obtained thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) with Sb doping was 0.32 at 350°C, which is comparable with known analogues for the Ge_ x Si_1 –_ x solid solution.

Polycrystalline Ca3-xBixCo4O9 samples have been prepared by solid-phase reaction followed by spark plasma sintering process. The thermoelectric properties have been systematically investigated from room temperature to near 1000K. It is found that the change of the carrier concentration leads to the change of resistivity, which is mainly associated with doping induced point defect phonon scattering. The change of the thermal potential mainly comes from the spin entropy. In addition, polycrystalline Ca3-xBixCo4O9 had a maximum figure of merit of 0.30 at 973 K, which was about 50% higher than Ca3Co4O9. It indicated that doping approach can effectively improve the thermoelectric performance of Ca3Co4O9+δ-based material.

Nanocomposites and heavy doping both are regarded as effective way to improve materials’ thermoelectric properties. 0.7at% Bi-doped Mg2Si nanocomposites were prepared by spark plasma sintering. Results of thermoelectric properties tests show that the doping of Bi atom effectively improves the electrical conductivity of Mg2Si,and the nanocomposite structures are helpful to reduce thermal conductivity and increase Seebeck coefficient, hence improving the thermoelectric performance. A maximum dimensionless figure of merit of 0.8 is obtained for the Bi-doped Mg2Si nanocomposite with 50 wt % nanopowder inclusions at 823K, about 63% higher than that of Bi-doped Mg2Si sample without nanopowder inclusions and 119% higher than that of microsized Mg2Si sample without Bi-doped, respectively.

p-type skutterudites NdxFe3CoSb12 with x equaling 0.8, 0.85, 0.9, 0.95, 1.0 have been synthesized by solid state reaction followed by spark plasma sintering. The influence of Nd filling on electrical and thermal transport properties has been investigated in the Nd-filled skutterudite compounds in the temperature range from room temperature to 800 K. It was found that the Seebeck coefficient is drastically enhanced via filling Nd in p-Type skutterudites as well as the corresponding power factor although electrical conductivity is reduced. In addition, a large reduction in thermal conductivity is achieved by Nd fillers through rattling effect along with the In-Situ nanostructured precipitate through scattering phonons with much wider frequency. These concomitant effects result in an enhanced thermoelectric performance with the dimensionless figure of merit ZT. These observations demonstrate an exciting scientific opportunity to raise the figure-of-merit of p-type skutterudites.

Ball milling and spark plasma sintering were successfully used to produce carbon nanotube reinforced Al6061 and Al2124 nanocomposites which have potential applications in the fields of aerospace, automotive, electronics, and high precision instrumentation. Al2124 and Al6061 nanocomposite powders containing 0.5 to 2 wt.% CNTs prepared through sonication and wet ball milling were spark plasma sintered at 400, 450, and 500°C for 20 minutes under a pressure of 35 MPa. CNTs were better dispersed, and less agglomerated and had good adhesion to the matrix in composites containing 1 wt.% CNTs. The increase of CNT content to 2 wt.% led to the formation of CNT clusters which resulted in less uniform and homogenous composite powders. Almost full densification of Al6061 reinforced with CNTs was achieved at 500°C. Also, CNTs reinforced Al2124 nanocomposites reached very high densities at 500°C. Composites reinforced with 1 wt.% CNTs displayed better densification compared to composites containing 2 wt.% CNTs. The increase of CNTs content from 0.5 to 1 wt.% increased the hardness of the Al6061 and Al2124 alloys to maximum values. Further increase of CNTs content to 2 wt.% decreased the hardness to values lower than that of the monolithic alloys.

AbstractWe studied the thermoelectric properties of BaSi2 and SrSi2. The polycrystalline samples were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The electrical resistivity (ρ), Seebeck coefficient (S), and thermal conductivity (κ) were measured above room temperature. The maximum values of the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) were 0.01 at 954 K for BaSi2 and 0.09 at 417 K for SrSi2. We tried to enhance the ZT values of BaSi2 and SrSi2 by prepareing and characterizing La-doped BaSi2 and (Ba,Sr)Si2 solid solution.
