A low profile, unidirectional, dual layer, and narrow bandwidth microstrip patch antenna is designed to resonate at 2.45 GHz. The proposed antenna is suitable for specific applications, such as security and military systems, which require a narrow bandwidth and a small antenna size. This work is mainly focused on increasing the gain as well as reducing the size of the unidirectional patch antenna. The proposed antenna is simulated and measured. According to the simulated and measured results, it is shown that the unidirectional antenna has a higher gain and a higher front to back ratio (F/B) than the bidirectional one. This is achieved by using a second flame retardant layer (FR-4), coated with an annealed copper of 0.035 mm at both sides, with an air gap of 0.04λ0as a reflector. A gain of 5.2 dB with directivity of 7.6 dBi, F/B of 9.5 dB, and −18 dB return losses (S11) are achieved through the use of a dual substrate layer of FR-4 with a relative permittivity of 4.3 and a thickness of 1.6 mm. The proposed dual layer microstrip patch antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 2% and the designed antenna shows very low complexity during fabrication.

A microstrip patch antenna is low profile antenna mounted over a high impedance electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) substrate is proposed. In this paper, Microstrip patch antenna with rectangular EBG structure is proposed and studied. The proposed antenna has compact structure with a total size of 29.44x38.036mm2 . The designed antenna resonates at Particular Single frequency with improved return loss, VSWR and gain. The resonant frequency of the antenna 2.4GHz without and with EBG and improved return loss of -17.61dB and -18.30dB. With rectangular EBG the antenna gives improved gain of 2.09 dB. The Proposed antenna is simulated by using Simulation software ie.(IE3D) and simulated results are in good with practical antenna characteristics.


Microstrip patch antenna is very popular and extensively used in GHz wireless communications. The demand of increased wireless communication applications, needs increase in bandwidth, gain, efficiency and isolation of microostrip patch antenna. Microstrip patch antenna is a low profile antenna but has narrow bandwidth, low gain, low efficiency and isolation. In this paper a microstrip patch antenna is designed with 1.6mm RT Duroid substrate material. The bandwidth, gain and isolation were found to be 60MHz, 7.5dB and -40dB with dual resonance. The bandwidth and isolation enhancement is achieved withsecond resonance suppression technique. The second resonance suppressed by using two slots. Simulations were conducted with different lengths of slots and at different positions and compared. A bandwidth of 270MHz, gain of 7.9dB and an isolation of -46dB are obtained. Bandwidth increase of 450% and 115% isolation increase are achieved.
