Background.Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a high-grade malignant tumor that has skeletal and extraskeletal forms and consists of small round cells. In the head and neck region, reported localization of extraskeletal ES includes the larynx, thyroid gland, submandibular gland, nasal fossa, pharynx, skin, and parotid gland, but not the external ear canal.Methods.We present the unique case of a 2-year-old boy with extraskeletal ES arising from the external ear canal, mimicking auricular hematoma.Results.Surgery was performed and a VAC/IE (vincristine, adriamycin, cyclophosphamide alternating with ifosfamide, and etoposide) regimen was used for adjuvant chemotherapy for 12 months.Conclusion.The clinician should consider extraskeletal ES when diagnosing tumors localized in the head and neck region because it may be manifested by a nonspecific clinical picture mimicking common otorhinolaryngologic disorders.

External auditory canal cancer is a rare disease which can be treated by surgery or chemoradiation. The most common histological type is squamous cell carcinoma, but rare types such as adenocarcinoma have been reported and are thought to be derived from the ceruminous glands. Here, we present a case of ceruminous adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (NOS) in the external auditory canal. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our department with discomfort due to a mass in the external ear canal. No typical symptoms of malignancy, such as pain or bleeding, were noted at the initial examination. The patient underwent a total excision under local anesthesia as a diagnostic treatment. She was diagnosed with ceruminous adenocarcinoma, NOS based on the results of immunostaining of the excised specimen, and is currently being followed up as an outpatient. Adenocarcinoma is thought to originate from the cerumen glands of the ear canal and the lack of specific symptoms may make it difficult to differentiate it from benign tumors. Although adenocarcinoma, NOS has been reported in the head and neck region, there have been no reported cases occurring in the external ear canal, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report.

Neurofibroma (NF) is a benign tumour of the peripheral nervous system which is rare in head and neck region. Head and neck NF are mostly located in the soft tissue and rarely seen intraosseously. These may present either as solitary lesions or as part of the generalised syndrome of neurofibromatosis or von Recklinghausen's disease of the skin. The intraosseous ones are most commonly seen as solitary lesions, rather than part of neurofibromatosis. The following report describes a unique case of a solitary neurofibroma of the maxilla without generalised syndrome of neurofibromatosis in a male patient.

Lymphomas represent the second most frequent malignant tumor (incidence 2.5%) in the head and neck region. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) present with cervical lymph node involvement, but in 40% extranodal site could be primary involved: nasopharynx, the lacrimal sac, the temporal bone, or the others areas. NHLs of the ear are rarely reported. In this report, we described a patient with primary NHL of the external ear canal who was successfully treated with surgical excision and chemotherapy.

Angiomyxomas are relatively a group of uncommon myxoid mesenchymal tumors characterized by frequent local recurrences and show lack of malignant potential. Basically three types of angiomyxomas are recognized superficial, aggressive, and angiomyofibroblastoma. Though the angiomyxomas are rarely reported in the head and neck region, the paper shows reported cases intraorally in the buccal mucosa and floor of the mouth. Here, the authors report a rare case of angiomyxoma presenting as a growth in the upper posterior alveolar mucosa.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant neoplasm that arises from primitive pluripotential mesenchymal cells . It is a high-grade histological variety of sarcoma and it accounts for 7-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Head and neck locations represent only 0.7% to 10% of all cases. Primary parapharyngeal synovial sarcoma (PPSS) is rare representing only 0.5% of all tumors of the head and neck region. We describe through a clinical case the clinical, radiological and histological features of PPSS and we discuss its therapeutic management.

Squamous papilloma in the head and neck region commonly affects the skin, oral mucosa and upper aerodigestive tract. Ear canal papillomas are relatively rare worldwide, even more uncommon in the West African subregion. We report a twenty year old Ghanaian male seen with ear canal papilloma at our clinic in Kumasi, Ghana. Diagnosis was essentially by histopathology and follow up revealed no recurrence.Journal of Medical and Biomedical Sciences (2016) 5(1), 32-35Keywords: Cauliflower mass, Squamous Papilloma, KATH, Ghana

Introduction: Melanoma of the external ear is a rare condition accounting for 7-20% of all melanomas of the head and neck region. They present classical features of extra-facial melanomas clinically and dermoscopically. In contrast, facial melanomas show peculiar patterns in dermoscopy. Objectives: We evaluate whether there are clinical and/or dermoscopic differences in melanocytic lesions located either at the external ear or on the face. Methods: In this retrospective study we reviewed an image database for clinical and dermoscopic images of melanomas and nevi located either on the face or at the level of the external ear. Results: 65 patients (37 men; 63.8%) with 65 lesions were included. We found no significant differences in comparing face melanomas with melanomas at the level of the external ear, neither clinically nor dermoscopically. However, we provided evidence for differences in some clinical and dermoscopic features of melanomas and nevi of the external ear. Conclusions: In this study, we reported no significant differences in comparing melanomas on the face with melanomas of the external ear, both clinically and dermoscopically. Furthermore, we provided data on clinical and dermoscopic differences comparing nevi and melanoma of the external ear.

In developing countries, head and neck penetrating injuries from construction nails are rare can be dangerous or fatal. The use of nail guns in the construction industry gained popularity during the 1990s and is now widespread. In majority of nail gun injuries, the extremities are involved, although injuries to the head and neck region have also been described with approximately 45 cases of cranium penetrating nail gun injuries published in the literature. The management of such cases includes a neurological examination, systemic physical examination, and determination of the optimal surgical method to approach and remove the foreign body. we report a case of penetrating skull base injury caused by a nail gun in a 46-year-old man that was successfully managed by a transnasal endoscopic approach. The patient recovered completely and was discharged. To prevent complications and achieve the best outcomes in such cases, careful diagnosis and assessment are necessary.
