This paper contributes an innovative gating signal generation technique based on fuzzy sliding mode pulse width modulation (FSMPWM) with a Series Hybrid Active Power Filter (SEHAPF) for reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD). Hybrid filters are used for compensating reactive power on the load side and mitigate harmonics for the growth of power quality under variable source and load conditions in the utility system. The objective of the paper is to eradicate the various power quality (PQ) problems with development in power factor and reducing distortion in transmission and distribution line due to harmonics. With the implementation of FSMPWM of the proposed filter, the gating pulses are generated by implementing a Mamdani fuzzy rule with sliding surfaces. For producing a fixed pulse the presented method reduces the chattering reaction by controlling the narrow boundary coating on the sliding surface. The results of the projected technique are analyzed and compared with the traditional hysteresis band current controller (HCC). The overall proficiency and results are examined with the help of MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

An adaptive fractional-order fuzzy control method for a three-phase active power filter (APF) using a backstepping and sliding mode controller is developed for the purpose of compensating harmonic current and stabilizing the DC voltage quickly. The dynamic model of APF is changed to an analogical cascade system for the convenience of the backstepping strategy. Then a fractional-order sliding mode surface is designed and a fuzzy controller is proposed to approximate the unknown term in the controller, where parameters can be adjusted online. The simulation experiments are conducted and investigated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software package to verify the advantage of the proposed controller. Furthermore, the comparison study between the fractional-order controller and integer-order one is also conducted in order to demonstrate the better performance of the proposed controller in total harmonic distortion (THD), a significant index to evaluate the current quality in the smart grid.

The correct determination of the parameters of Hybrid Active Power Filter (HAPF) plays a decisive role in its performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a new design algorithm for HAPF based on the Social Spider Algorithm (SSA). This algorithm has the advantage that it is possible to determine the parameters of both the power circuit part and the control circuit part of HAPF. The achieved results are multi-purpose, such as: minimum total harmonic distortion of the supply current and source voltage, the maximum reactive power compensation into the system and satisfy many constraints such as: system stability, resonance conditions of the branches and the limits of the parameters. Compared to traditional design method using the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, the proposed algorithm shows the advantages of smaller total harmonic distortion of supply current and source voltage, and higher reactive power compensation into the grid while still meeting the constraints.

This paper presents the use of a three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter to improve the power quality in the Department of Industrial Electronics of a large enterprise from Romania. The specificity is given by the predominant existence of single-phase consumers (such as personal computers, printers, lighting and AC equipment). In order to identify the power quality indicators and ways to improve them, an A-class analyzer was used to record the electrical quantities and energy parameters in the point of common coupling (PCC) with the nonlinear loads for 27 h. The analysis shows that, in order to improve the power quality in PCC, three goals must be achieved: the compensation of the distortion power, the compensation of the reactive power and the compensation of the load unbalance. By using the conceived three-leg shunt active power filter, controlled through the indirect current control method in an original variant, the power quality at the supply side is very much improved. In the proposed control algorithm, the prescribed active current is obtained as a sum of the loss current provided by the DC voltage and the equivalent active current of the unbalanced load. The performance associated with each objective of the compensation is presented and analyzed. The results show that all the power quality indicators meet the specific standards and regulations and prove the validity of the proposed solution.
