von Hippel-Lindau disease (vHLD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with multiple benign and malignant tumors of different organs. We report a papillary cystadenoma of the mesosalpinx found in close association with an adenomatoid tumor discovered incidentally following tubal ligation in a patient with vHLD.

von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) disease is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by heterozygous mutations in the VHL tumor suppressor gene that is characterized by the occurrence of multiple endocrine and nonendocrine lesions. This review focuses on the endocrine manifestations of VHL disease. Pancreatic neuroendocrine proliferations (ductuloinsular complexes, islet dysplasia, endocrine microadenoma, and neuroendocrine tumors), pheochromocytomas, and extra-adrenal paragangliomas are important endocrine manifestations of VHL disease. They frequently display characteristic clinical, biochemical, and histopathologic features that, although not pathognomonic, can be helpful in suggesting VHL disease as the underlying etiology and distinguishing these tumors from sporadic cases. Recent improvements in treatment and outcomes of renal cell carcinomas have allowed pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors to emerge as a significant source of metastatic disease, making the accurate recognition and classification of these neoplasms by the pathologist of utmost importance to determine prognosis, treatment, and follow-up strategies for affected patients.

Testicular cystadenoma is ranked the second commonest benign neoplasm. Other benign epididymal neoplasms include adenomatoid tumor (most common), leiomyoma, serous (nonpapillary) cystadenoma, cavernous hemangioma, and melanotic neuroectodermal tumor. Adenocarcinoma, mesothelioma, and metastatic renal cell carcinoma are malignant tumors that can affect the epididymis. A 24-year-old male undergraduate with a 3-month history of mildly tender right testicular swelling histologically diagnosed as papillary cystadenoma is presented. This case is presented from our locality as the first of its’ kind; and because it can be a possible manifestation of other diseases like von Hippel- Lindau (VHL) disease.

Von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) disease is a rare, familial disorder involving multiple organs, and characterized by the development of many benign and malignant tumors. It is an autosomal dominant disorder with high penetrance and variable expression. We present a case of a 31-year-old gentleman with gradual onset painless bilateral diminution in the vision for one and a half months with significant positive family history. Radiographic study revealed multiple cerebellar hemangioblastomas with obstructive hydrocephalus, renal cortical and pancreatic cysts and cystic renal cell carcinoma. Symptoms were relieved after endoscopic third ventriculostomy. These constellations of findings suggested von Hippel Lindau (VHL) syndrome and we present this case.

Abstract Von Hippel-Lindau disease is an inherited, autosomal dominant tumor predisposition syndrome which leads to susceptibility for developing hemangioblastomas of the central nervous system and retina, as well as other tumor types. No approved systemic therapies exist for this disease. Here, we present a patient diagnosed with Von Hippel-Lindau disease, with central nervous system and retinal hemangioblastomas, treated with propranolol and subsequently with Lanreotide. On both treatments, the patient showed notable symptom improvement. In addition, since starting Lanreotide, the patients hemangioblastoma has remained stable on imaging. Based on the symptom improvement in this patient and other reported findings in the literature, propranolol and somatostatin agonist therapy may have an anti-tumor effect in Von Hippel-Lindau associated hemangioblastomas; however, further investigation is warranted.

Abstract Purpose. von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease is a familiar syndrome associated with benign and malignant tumors. These tumors appear in the retina, cerebellum, spinal cord, and kidney. Retinal hemangioblastomas are one of the earliest and most frequent manifestations of this entity, and they can lead to blindness at a young age. Propranolol could be a promising treatment for retinal hemangioblastomas in von Hippel Lindau disease. Methods. Prospective cohort study. Seven patients with VHL disease and ocular affection that had rejected conventional treatment were included. Prospective analysis of seven patients was performed. We evaluated them for three years, with a complete ophthalmic evaluation that included: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, an examination of the anterior segment of the eye, fundoscopy, retinography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Heart rate and blood pressure on each patient were also measured. During the follow-up evaluation, two patients discontinued the treatment with propranolol after the first year and rejected any further treatment for their ocular affection; the rest continued therapy for the three years. Results: Visual acuity and tumor areas remained stable in 4 patients. Increased and new retinal exudation area was found in the two patients that discontinued the treatment with oral propranolol. Conclusions: Oral propranolol has shown a role in the reabsorption of retinal exudates in patients with von Hippel Lindau affection. It could delay or stabilize the ocular disease, maintaining visual acuity, and avoiding further complications in these patients. It is a well-known and available drug, without so many secondary effects, that could also have a role in other ocular diseases that course with exudation.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder that predisposes the occurrence of cysts and various types of cancers such as hemangioblastoma, pheochromocytoma, renal cell carcinoma and more rarely pancreatic tumors. In this review, we analyze the characteristics and management of pancreatic lesions, in particular cysts and neuroendocrine tumors, in Von Hippel-Lindau disease.

This chapter describes several neurocutaneous syndromes, including tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, Sturge–Weber syndrome, Von-Hippel–Lindau disease and ataxia telangiectasia amongst others.Tuberous sclerosis, also known as Epiloia or Bournville’s Disease, is an autosomal dominant multisystem disease it usually presents in childhood with a characteristic facial rash, adenoma sebaceum, seizures, and sometimes learning difficulties. Central nervous system lesions in tuberous sclerosis are due to a developmental disorder of neurogenesis and neuronal migration. Other organs such as the heart and kidney are less commonly involved. The condition has very variable clinical expression and two-thirds of cases are thought to be new mutations, therefore it is important to examine and screen relatives. Management may involve many specialists and close co-operation between specialists is essential.The neurofibromatoses are autosomal-dominant neurocutaneous disorders that can be divided into ‘peripheral’ and ‘central’ types, although there is significant overlap. The characteristic features of neurofibromatosis type 1 are café au lait spots, neurofibromas, Lisch nodules, osseous lesions, macrocephaly, short stature and mental retardation, axillary freckling, and associations with several different types of tumours.Sturge–Weber syndrome involves a characteristic ‘port-wine’ facial naevus or angioma associated with an underlying leptomeningeal angioma or other vascular anomaly. It affects approximately 1/20 000 people. There can be seizures, low IQ, and underlying cerebral hemisphere atrophy as a result of chronic state of reduced perfusion and increased oxygen extraction. Patients may present with focal seizures which are generally resistant to anticonvulsant medication and can develop glaucoma.Von-Hippel– Lindau disease is one of the most common autosomal-dominant inherited genetic diseases that are associated with familial cancers. Von-Hippel–Lindau disease is characterized by certain types of central nervous system tumours, cerebellar and spinal haemangioblastomas, and retinal angiomas, in conjunction with bilateral renal cysts carcinomas or phaechromocytoma, or pancreatic cysts/islet cell tumours (Neumann and Wiestler 1991).Other neurocutaneous syndromes discussed include Hypomelanosis of Ito, Gorlin syndrome, Sjogren–Larsson syndrome, Proteus syndrome, Hemiatrophy and hemihypertrophy, Menke’s syndrome, Xeroderma pigmentosum and Cockayne’s syndrome.
