Traditionally, asphalt pavements are considered as linear elastic materials in finite element (FE) method to save computational time for engineering design. However, asphalt mixture exhibits linear viscoelasticity at small strain and low temperature. Therefore, the results derived from the elastic analysis will inevitably lead to discrepancies from reality. Currently, several FE programs have already adopted viscoelasticity, but the high hardware demands and long execution times render them suitable primarily for research purposes. Semianalytical finite element method (SAFEM) was proposed to solve the abovementioned problem. The SAFEM is a three-dimensional FE algorithm that only requires a two-dimensional mesh by incorporating the Fourier series in the third dimension, which can significantly reduce the computational time. This paper describes the development of SAFEM to capture the viscoelastic property of asphalt pavements by using a recursive formulation. The formulation is verified by comparison with the commercial FE software ABAQUS. An application example is presented for simulations of creep deformation of the asphalt pavement. The investigation shows that the SAFEM is an efficient tool for pavement engineers to fast and reliably predict asphalt pavement responses; furthermore, the SAFEM provides a flexible, robust platform for the future development in the numerical simulation of asphalt pavements.

Analysis of transonic flow through a cascade of airfoils is investigated using the finite element method. Development of a computational grid suitable for complex flow structures and different types of boundary conditions is presented. An efficient pseudo-time integration scheme is developed for the solution of equations. Modeling of the shock and the convergence characteristics of the developed scheme are discussed. Numerical results include a 45 deg staggered cascade of NACA 0012 airfoils with inlet flow Mach number of 0.8 and angles of attack 1, 0, and −1 deg.

In this study, an effective numerical framework for fracture simulations is proposed using the edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) and isotropic damage model. The duality between the Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi tessellation is utilized for the mesh construction and the compatible use of the finite element solution with the Voronoi-cell lattice geometry. The mesh irregularity is introduced to avoid calculating the biased crack path by adding random variation in the nodal coordinates, and the ES-FEM elements are defined along the Delaunay edges. With the Voronoi tessellation, each nodal mass is calculated and the fractured surfaces are visualized along the Voronoi edges. The rotational degrees of freedom are implemented for each node by introducing the elemental formulation of the Voronoi-cell lattice model, and the accurate visualizations of the rotational motions in the Voronoi diagram are achieved. An isotropic damage model is newly incorporated into the ES-FEM formulation, and the equivalent elemental length is introduced with an additional geometric factor to simulate the consistent softening behaviors with reducing the mesh sensitivity. The full matrix form of the smoothed strain-displacement matrix is constructed for optimal use in the element-wise computations during explicit time integration, and parallel computing is implemented for the enhancement of the computational efficiency. The simulated results are compared with the theoretical solutions or experimental results, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in the simulations of the quasi-brittle fractures.

Based on the viscoelasticity theory and the data of creep test, Burgers model was established, which was used to study the viscoelastic property of SBR asphalt mixtures, and the viscoelastic constitutive relation was obtained. Using the finite element method, the temperature stresses field was calculated under the environmental conditions and the thermal stresses of SBR modified asphalt pavement was given at the last part of this paper. The study indicated that SBR modified asphalt mixtures have the advantage over common asphalt mixture in low-temperature performance.

An extended finite element method (XFEM) for multiple crack growth in asphalt pavement is described. A discontinuous function and the two-dimensional asymptotic crack-tip displacement fields are added to the finite element approximation to account for the crack using the notion of partition of unity. This enables the domain to be modeled by finite element with no explicit meshing of the crack surfaces. Computational geometry issues associated with the representation of the crack and the enrichment of the finite element approximation are discussed. Finally, the propagation path of the cracks in asphalt pavement under different load conditions is presented.
