Results of the numerical simulations of the size effect phenomenon for concrete in comparison with experimental data are presented. In-plane geometrically similar notched and unnotched beams under three-point bending are analyzed. EXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) with a cohesive softening law is used. Comprehensive parametric study with the respect to the tensile strength and the initial fracture energy is performed. Sensitivity of the results with respect to the material parameters and the specimen geometry is investigated. Three different softening laws are examined. First, a bilinear softening definition is utilized. Then, an exponential curve is taken. Finally, a rational Bezier curve is tested. An ambiguity in choosing material parameters and softening curve definitions is discussed. Numerical results are compared with experimental outcomes recently reported in the literature. Two error measures are defined and used to quantitatively assess calculated maximum forces (nominal strengths) in comparison with experimental values as a primary criterion. In addition, the force—displacement curves are also analyzed. It is shown that all softening curves produce results consistent with the experimental data. Moreover, with different softening laws assumed, different initial fracture energies should be taken to obtain proper results.

Gears mounted on a shaft via interference fit are the subject of an internal pressure which is essential for power transmission between gear and shaft. The pressure between shaft and gear is responsible for additional stresses occurring both in shaft and gear. This study examines the effect of stresses arising due to the interference on the crack growth that exists at the root of the gear tooth. The numerical analyses were conducted on models having different rim thicknesses by using the extended finite element method that allows mesh-independent crack modeling and does not need re-meshing. The results showed that internal pressure yields additional stresses in the tangential direction. The increment in tangential stress changed the location and intensity of the maximal 1st principal stress and accelerated crack growth. As the tightness of the fit increased, the crack turned towards the rim rather than towards the tooth. As the crack growth through the rim may cause a catastrophic failure of gear, the increment in tangential stress due to internal pressure is crucial for the fatigue life of the gear.

Sandwich composites are susceptible to interfacial delamination, owing to the mismatches in the material properties between the face sheets and core. Previous studies have shown that stitching can improve the performance of sandwich composites. In this study, an analysis approach was developed to investigate the fracture behaviour of stitched foam sandwich composites. The stitched foam sandwich composites were manufactured by a vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding process. Interlaminar tension tests revealed the effects of the linear thread density on the failure mechanisms of the stitched foam sandwich composites. Asymmetric double cantilever beam tests were performed to investigate the influences of the stitch thread reinforcement on the fracture behaviour. An analytical approach combining extended finite element method and nonlinear spring elements was proposed to predict the failure behaviour of the stitched sandwich composites. Experiment and simulation approaches were employed to investigate the influences of the stitch parameters (stitch pitch and linear thread density) on the ultimate load and energy absorption. The results show that stitched method can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of sandwich composites. The energy absorption and ultimate load values of the specimens tend to increase with an increase in the linear thread density or a decrease in the stitch pitch.

Based on the improved Paris formula, the reflection cracking characteristics of asphalt overlay on the cement concrete pavement are carefully scrutinized. The fatigue life is also predicted through the indoor simulation tests and establishing the two- and three-dimensional extended finite-element method (XFEM) models. Four fracture factors of the Paris formula in the asphalt mixture are appropriately calculated by fitting the N-a curve of the indoor test, and their predicted values are then exploited in the numerical simulations. The obtained results show that the numerical model can successfully predict the results of the indoor simulation test. It indicates that the XFEM has apparent advantages in examining the reflection cracking of the asphalt overlay on the cement concrete pavement.
