Purpose: The implantation of a gastric balloon (also known as intragastric balloon) is an established and reversible endoscopic procedure for adiposity therapy. Structural changes of the stomach wall are expected to occur with gastric balloon implantation; however, until now these changes have rarely been investigated. Methods: We compared the histological structure of the stomach wall after gastric-sleeve resection in a group of patients following gastric balloon implantation and a group without previous gastric balloon implantation. Results: Following gastric balloon implantation, the tunica muscularis was found to be significantly thicker than without gastric balloon implantation. The enlarging of the tunica muscularis is not caused by hyperplasia of the leiomyocytes, but by hypertrophy of the leiomyocytes and an increase in collagen fibers (fibrosis). Conclusion: A longer-lasting hypertrophy of the tunica muscularis, particularly in the corpus, should be taken into account when surgical treatment follows gastric balloon implantation. The staple suture height should be adjusted to the altered tissue composition since reduced tissue elasticity must be expected due to fibrosis.

The pituitary-thyroid axis of young sexually mature rabbits kept under a 24-hour daylight photoperiod was shown to undergo phase-modulated variations of hormonal activity with its initial increase (during the first month) and subsequent progressive decrease (within 2-5 months after the onset of exposure to light). These changes correlated with the time-dependent fall in the blood T3, T4, and TSH levels. Simultaneously, the animals developed pathological changes in the histological structure of the thyroid gland similar to those in patients with secondary or tertiary hypothyroidism. It is concluded that hormonal and structural changes in the thyroid gland during long-term hypopinealism should be regarded as an experimental model of hypothyroidism of neuroendocrine origin.

Lingual frenotomy has become an increasingly common surgical procedure, performed for a broad range of indications from birth through adulthood. This study utilizes histology to define the structure and tissue composition of the lingual frenulum and floor of mouth (FOM) fascia. En bloc specimens of anterior tongue, lingual frenulum, and FOM tissues were harvested from ten embalmed adult cadavers. An additional three fresh tissue cadaveric specimens were frozen with the tongue supported in an elevated position, to enable harvesting and paraffin embedding of the elevated lingual frenulum as a discrete specimen. All 13 specimens were prepared as ten-micron coronal sections using stains to determine the general morphology of the lingual frenulum, its relationship to neighbouring structures (Mason’s Trichrome), presence of elastin fibers (Verhoeff-van Gieson), and collagen typing (Picrosirius Red). Our results have shown a submucosal layer of fascia spanning horizontally across the FOM was present in all specimens, with variability in fascial thickness and histologic composition. This FOM fascia suspends the sublingual glands, vessels, and genioglossus from its deep surface. The elevated lingual frenulum is formed by a central fold of this FOM fascia together with the overlying oral mucosa with variability in fascial thickness and composition. With tongue elevation, the fascia mobilizes to a variable extent into the fold forming the frenulum, providing a structural explanation for the individual variability in lingual frenulum morphology seen in clinical practice.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of integrity biomarkers of reproductive toxicity: histoarchitecture of genital organs (testis and epididymis) and sexual accessory glands (prostate, seminal vesicles and bulbo-urethral glands) at sexual maturity after exposure to potassium dichromate (Cr VI) in suckling period. Consequent to the exposure of male rat pups to hexavalent chromium during suckling period structural changes appeared in genital organs and sexual accessory glands, such as: basal membrane and epithelial disintegration, interstitial edema, wavy basal membrane due to a reduction in tubule diameter, Leydig cell necrosis; epithelial smoothing, epithelial necrosis; epithelial cells desquamation and falling in lumen. Exposure to potassium dichromate (Cr VI) during suckling period produced severe congestive and degenerative lesions in genital organs and sexual accessory glands.

The problem of thyroid cancer in Russia became especially relevant after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. We can trace the dynamics of morbidity in the population of Leningrad Saint Petersburg from 1980 to 2018. for the periods before and after the accident, even before the inclusion of this localization of malignant neoplasms in the state reports. Thyroid cancer can be attributed to rare malignancies. In addition to morbidity and mortality, it is planned to consider such analytical indicators that are practically not used in Russia as the reliability of accounting, partial mortality and five-year survival of patients with thyroid cancer calculated according to the international standard. In many territories of Russia and abroad, an increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer has been detected, which to some extent may be associated with its overdiagnosis, against the background of a decrease in the population s mortality from this cause. Favorable patterns were found in relation to the reliability of accounting in Russia and especially in Saint Petersburg. Some structural changes were detected in the histological structure of thyroid cancer.

Introduction. The aim of this paper was to presents long-term results of a laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection in a ?super super? obese patient and a follow-up period of eight years. Case Outline. A patient with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 70 kg/m2 and Stage 3 obesity according to ?King?s Obesity Staging Criteria? (KOSC), with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk of over 20%, and a pronounced severe obstructive sleep apnea, underwent a laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection (LGS). After two years, the patient reached BMI of 28.4 kg/m2 and eight years after the surgery has BMI of 34.3 kg/m2, and %EBMIL (% Excess BMI Loss) of 79.3%. According to the KOCS, he falls under Stage 0. Conclusion. LGS resection may be performed as a stand-alone procedure in ?super super? obese patients, with excellent long-term results.
