This paper proposes Firefly Algorithm (FA) with fuzzy approach for solving combined economic-emission load dispatch (CEELD) problem in power generation. The main objective of the CEELD problem is to determine the optimal cost and emission level of power generation and fulfill the load demand and operational constraints. The CEELD problem used weighted sum method to combine two objective functions (cost and emission) into single objective. Then, the Fuzzy-based mechanism approach is integrated in FA to find the best compromise solution for both conflicting cost and emission level. The FA has been tested on IEEE 118-bus 14-unit test system for minimization both cost of power generation and emission level. The performance of FA for solving CEELD problem has been investigated in terms of optimal solution, convergence characteristics and Pareto front solution. From the comparison of the CEELD solutions, it found that FA can provide significant cost and emission reduction compared to other methods. Thus, it can be used as alternative approach for solving any optimization problems.

In this paper, NSGA-Ⅱ is used to realize the dual-objective optimization and three-objective optimization of the solar-thermal photovoltaic hybrid power generation system; Compared with the optimal solution set of three-objective optimization, optimization based on technical and economic evaluation indicators belongs to the category of multi-objective optimization. It can be considered that NSGA-Ⅱ is very suitable for multi-objective optimization of solar-thermal photovoltaic hybrid power generation system and other similar multi-objective optimization problems.

This chapter presents a hybrid optimization algorithm namely FOA-FA for solving single and multi-objective optimization problems. The proposed algorithm integrates the benefits of the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) and the firefly algorithm (FA) to avoid the entrapment in the local optima and the premature convergence of the population. FOA operates in the direction of seeking the optimum solution while the firefly algorithm (FA) has been used to accelerate the optimum seeking process and speed up the convergence performance to the global solution. Further, the multi-objective optimization problem is scalarized to a single objective problem by weighting method, where the proposed algorithm is implemented to derive the non-inferior solutions that are in contrast to the optimal solution. Finally, the proposed FOA-FA algorithm is tested on different benchmark problems whether single or multi-objective aspects and two engineering applications. The numerical comparisons reveal the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Economic dispatch (ED) is the power demand allocating process for the committed units at minimum generation cost while satisfying system and operational constraints. Increasing cost of fuel price and electricity demand can increase the cost of thermal power generation. Therefore, robust and efficient optimization algorithm is required to determine the optimal solution for ED problem in power system operation and planning. In this paper the lightning search algorithm (LSA) is proposed to solve the ED problem. The system constraints such as power balance, generator limits, system transmission losses and valve-points effects (VPE) are considered in this paper. To verify the effectiveness of LSA in terms of convergence characteristic, robustness, simulation time and solution quality, the two case studies consists of 6 and 13 units have been tested. The simulation results show that the LSA can provide optimal cost than many methods reported in literature. Therefore, it has potential to solve many optimization problems in power dispatch and power system applications.

In power systems, determining the values of time dial setting (TDS) and the plug setting (PS) for directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is an extremely constrained optimization problem that has been previously described and solved as a nonlinear programming problem. Optimization coordination problems of near-end faults and far-end faults occurring simultaneously in circuits with various topologies, including fixed and variable network topologies, are considered in this study. The aim of this study was to apply the Nelder-Mead (NM) simplex search method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve this optimization problem. The proposed NM-PSO method has the advantage of NM algorithm, with a quicker movement toward optimal solution, as well as the advantage of PSO algorithm in the ability to obtain globally optimal solution. Neither a conventional PSO nor the proposed NM-PSO method is capable of dealing with constrained optimization problems. Therefore, we use the gradient-based repair method embedded in a conventional PSO and the proposed NM-PSO. This study used an IEEE 8-bus test system as a case study to compare the convergence performance of the proposed NM-PSO method and a conventional PSO approach. The results demonstrate that a robust and optimal solution can be obtained efficiently by implementing the proposal.

Firefly Algorithm (FA) is a recent swarm intelligence first introduced by X.S. Yang in 2008. It has been widely used to solve several optimization problems. Since then, many research works were elaborated presenting modified versions intending to improve performances of the standard one. Consequently, this article aims to present an accelerated variant compared to the original Algorithm. Through the resolving of some benchmark functions to reach optimal solution, obtained results demonstrate the superiority of the suggested alternative, so-called Fast Firefly Algorithm (FFA), when faced with those of the standard FA in term of convergence fastness to the global solution according to an almost similar precision. Additionally, a successful application for the control of a brushless direct current electric motor (BLDC) motor by optimization of the Proportional Integral (PI) regulator parameters is given. These parameters are optimized by the FFA, FA, GA, PSO and ABC algorithms using the IAE, ISE, ITAE and ISTE performance criteria.

In this paper, a hybrid algorithm as the combination of Firefly and Water Wave algorithm (FWW) has been proposed to solve the Reactive power problem. The firefly algorithm is a meta-heuristic technique which is widely used for solving the optimization problems. The water wave optimization algorithm is also a nature inspired based algorithm. Both algorithms collectively improved the performance of search. The water wave algorithm is work on the combinatorial optimization and utilized as application of firefly algorithm. Hence we merge these two algorithms and make a hybrid algorithm. Proposed FWW algorithm has been tested in standard IEEE 30 Bus test system and simulation results reveal the better performance of the proposed algorithm in reducing the real power loss and voltage profiles were found to be within the limits.

Application of UPFC for enhancement of voltage profile and minimization of losses using Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI)Transmission line loss minimization in a power system is an important research issue and it can be achieved by means of reactive power compensation. The unscheduled increment of load in a power system has driven the system to experience stressed conditions. This phenomenon has also led to voltage profile depreciation below the acceptable secure limit. The significance and use of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices and capacitor placement is in order to alleviate the voltage profile decay problem. The optimal value of compensating devices requires proper optimization technique, able to search the optimal solution with less computational burden. This paper presents a technique to provide simultaneous or individual controls of basic system parameter like transmission voltage, impedance and phase angle, thereby controlling the transmitted power using Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) based on Bacterial Foraging (BF) algorithm. Voltage stability level of the system is defined on the Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) of the lines. The IEEE 14-bus system is used as the test system to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed system. The test result showed that the location of UPFC improves the voltage profile and also minimize the real power loss.

We present a new approach for solving nonsmooth optimization problems and a system of nonsmooth equations which is based on generalized derivative. For this purpose, we introduce the first order of generalized Taylor expansion of nonsmooth functions and replace it with smooth functions. In other words, nonsmooth function is approximated by a piecewise linear function based on generalized derivative. In the next step, we solve smooth linear optimization problem whose optimal solution is an approximate solution of main problem. Then, we apply the results for solving system of nonsmooth equations. Finally, for efficiency of our approach some numerical examples have been presented.

In order to deal with complex product design optimization problems with both discrete and continuous variables, mix-variable collaborative design optimization algorithm is put forward based on collaborative optimization, which is an efficient way to solve mix-variable design optimization problems. On the rule of “divide and rule”, the algorithm decouples the problem into some relatively simple subsystems. Then by using collaborative mechanism, the optimal solution is obtained. Finally, the result of a case shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the new algorithm.
