This paper focuses on modeling and closed-loop speed control of a three-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) fed by a Matrix Converter (MC) based on Field-Oriented Control (FOC). The model considers a set of a small input filter with supply impedance or cable effect, to improve the quality of the input current. A simplified form of the Venturini modulation algorithm is used for switching the matrix converter and a comparative study of two types of speed controllers is presented, namely a proportional integral (PI) and a proportional integral (PI) to improve performances of the drive system in transient and stable conditions. The overall drive system is simulated using Matlab/Simulink environment. The motor performance is evaluated under different operating conditions such as sudden changes in the load or changes in the angular speed reference. The results of the converter MC gives unlimited output frequency, sinusoidal input current and output voltage waveforms and unity input displacement factor. The IP controller is shown to achieve better performance of the speed control loop, with or without the load torque as compared to the PI classic controller.

In this paper, the vector-controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) fed by Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC) is analyzed, designed, and simulated by using the IMC with Carrier Based Pulse Width Modulation (CBPWM). The CBPWM strategy is based on Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) analysis, it is used to enhance the input current waveform, reduce the complexity of switching signals generation, and to solve the commutation problem. The traditional PMSM drive system is simulated for comparison with proposed drive system. The proposed drive system is compared to the traditional drive system using the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The comparison results show that the proposed drive system outperform the traditional drive system by THD different of 1/30 of input current and 1/1.5 of stator current, with high input power factor.

This paper proposes a non-cascade -single loop- Direct Speed Control algorithm for surface mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) fed by Matrix Converter. The proposed method uses Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) to manipulate system speed and currents simultaneously. Also, for better performance of the predictive method, an observer designed to estimate mechanical torque and other uncertain parameters of the mechanical subsystem as a lumped disturbance. Simulation results using Matlab/Simulink demonstrate the performance of proposed algorithm.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a nonlinear speed controller design based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is presented in this paper. For tuning the PID controller, the speed control for PMSM was analyzed using PSO algorithm to optimize the parameters in terms of proportional gain (Kp), integral gain (Ki), and derivative gain (Kd). Moreover, the overall system is evaluated under various operating conditions such as starting, braking, load application and load removal. Besides this, comparison between speed control of PMSM using Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) method and speed control of PMSM with PSO technique has been carried out. These analyses are estimated in terms of dynamic and static response. The transient response are examined in terms of settling time (ts), rise time (tr), peak time (tp), and peak overshoot (Mp). Overall, PID speed controller with PSO technique shows that the proposed method has improved the performance under the various operating conditions.

On the basis of analysis of dq model of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and principle of field oriented control (FOC), detail modelling of PMSM drive system and simulation results presented in this paper. The PMSM model is based on electronic components rather than mathematical blocks, this enabled us to achieve simulation results more realistic. Moreover all the modules of this simulation, such as inverter and pwm generator are made from scratch instead of using premade Simulink blocks. Simulation was carried on the basis of step change in speed and torque then made performance comparison of several parameters such as abc current, dq current, speed and torque.
