This study was carried out to assess the status and conservation issues of migratory water birds in Komaranahalli Kere, a lake in Malebennur, Harihar Taluk, Davanagere District from November 2012 to October 2013. The dominant family was Ardeidae represented by 10 species, followed by the Scolopacidae with seven species.  The families with lowest representations of one species were Podicipididae, Anhingidae, Rostratulidae and Recurvirostridae. The study revealed that the lake harbors many resident and a few migratory bird species. Among the species recorded five species namely the Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus, Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster, Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa, Painted Stork Mycteria leucocephala and River Tern Sterna aurantia are Near Threatened. The present study location is also facing tremendous conservation challenges by the impact of anthropogenic alteration of the habitats in and around the lake. Though the lake is highly disturbed, it still provides some potential habitats for a few migratory and several resident water bird species.

The present investigation was undertaken to study the diversity of wetland birds in Chhaya Rann (Gujarati: Deserted land) wetland complex, situated in the urban setting of Porbandar City, in the western state of Gujarat, India.  Almost 70 species belonging to 21 families of wetland birds have been reported from here with an estimated count of 35,747 and 20,981 in the year 2016 and 2015 respectively.  Anatidae and Scolopacidae represent the higher number of species (11 each) followed by Ardeidae (eight species) and Laridae (seven species).  The wetland complex supports one IUCN Red Listed Vulnerable species (Common Pochard Aythya ferina), six Near Threatened species (Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor, Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster, Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus, Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus, Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa and River Tern Sterna aurantia), and 63 Least Concern species.  The wetland meets the Criteria 5 and 6 for listing as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Ujjani wetland is a potential Ramsar site in Maharashtra, India with several satellite wetlands associated with it.  The present study contributes to single large or several small habitat conservation theories by assessing wetland bird communities.  Aquatic bird communities were assessed using area search and point count methods at Kumbhargaon (Ujjani), Bhadalwadi, Madanwadi, Palasdev, Pimple and Ravangaon wetlands between October 2011 and September2012.  These are representative satellite wetlands around Ujjani.  One-hundred-and-ten species of wetland birds across 12 orders and 29 families were recorded.  Out of these, 66 were resident and 44 were found to be migrants.  These birds represent 23% mudflat feeder, 16% upland feeder, 14% marsh feeder, 12% bird of prey, 11% surface feeder and fish eaters, while divers and wet meadow feeders were represented with 8.5% and 5% of the species, respectively.  Among the birds recorded, Woolly-necked Stork Ciconia episcopus, Common Pochard Aythya farina, and Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga belong to the Vulnerable category; while Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata, Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster, Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa, Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus, Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor, Painted Stork Mycteria leucocephala, River Tern Sterna aurantia, and Great Thick-knee Esacus recurvirostris represent Near Threatened category on the IUCN Red List.  The presence of these bird species underlines the importance and conservation priorities of a major as well as smaller satellite wetlands.  Anthropogenic activities such as cattle grazing, fishing, sand and soil mining, land encroachment, urban development and tourism were observed as some of the threats to this wetland ecosystem as well as bird communities.

Lower Chota Nagpur Plateau has several large and small water bodies having diverse aquatic flora and fauna. These wetlands not only provide suitable habitat for resident and as well as migratory avian species but also contribute much to the biodiversity. The present study deals with the diversity, abundance and variations of avian migratory species at wetlands of Purulia district. The study reflects that there are 43 migratory bird species in number in these wetland regions belonging to 8 orders and 12 families. Red-crested Pochard, Tufted Duck, Lesser Whistling Duck, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Coot etc. are found in large number in winter season in these wetlands.

Abstract Background The common cockle Cerastoderma edule plays an important ecological role in the marine ecosystem both as an infaunal engineer (reef forming and bioturbation) and a food source for protected bird species in its European range. Cockle beds are found in close proximity to aquaculture and fisheries operations, which can be “hot spots” for infectious agents including viruses and bacteria. Ostreid herpesvirus-1 microVar (OsHV-1 μVar) has spread to many Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas culture sites globally, where it has been associated with significant mortalities in this cultured bivalve. Knowledge on the impact of the virus on the wider ecosystem, is limited. As the likelihood of released virus dispersing into the wider aquatic ecosystem is high, the plasticity of the virus and the susceptibility of C. edule to act as hosts or carriers is unknown. Methods In this study, wild C. edule were sampled biweekly at two C. gigas culture sites over a four-month period during the summer when OsHV-1 μVar prevalence is at its highest in oysters. C. edule were screened for the virus molecularly (PCR, qPCR and Sanger sequencing) and visually (in situ hybridisation (ISH)). The cockle’s ability to act as a carrier and transmit OsHV-1 μVar to the oyster host at a temperature of 14 ℃, when the virus is considered to be dormant until water temperatures exceed 16 ℃, was also assessed in laboratory transmission trials. Results The results demonstrated that OsHV-1 μVar was detected in all C. edule size/age cohorts, at both culture sites. In the laboratory, viral transmission was effected from cockles to naïve oysters for the first time, five days post-exposure. The laboratory study also demonstrated that OsHV-1 μVar was active and was successfully transmitted from the C. edule at lower temperatures. Conclusions This study demonstrates that OsHV-1 μVar has the plasticity to infect the keystone species C. edule and highlights the possible trophic transmission of the virus from cockles to their mobile top predators. This scenario would have important implications, as a greater geographical range expansion of this significant pathogen via migratory bird species may have an impact on other species that reside in bird habitats most of which are special areas of conservation.

Bird species are natural indicators of healthy ecosystem. Indian sub-continent contributes about 13% of the world avian species. A study was carried out between year 2017 and 2019, at Haiderpur wetland (Hastinapur wildlife sanctuary) along the Ganga River in Utter Pradesh. Total 66 water bird species belonging to 15 families were encountered. Among the water bird species 04 Vulnerable (Common Pochard, Black headed ibis, Sarus crane, Indian skimmer), 06 near threaten (River Lapwing, Northern lapwing, River tern, Painted stork, Woolly-necked Stork, Black-tailed Godwit) and 01 Endangered (Black-bellied Tern) waterbird species (as per IUCN records) were reported in the Haiderpur wetland area. The contribution of water migratory bird is about 29% in the study area. This area is contributing as birding site thus more focus on conservation of this site.

A total of 20 bird species belongs to 7 orders and 11 families were recorded in Dharmadam estuary in Kannur district. The record of migratory bird Eurasian Curlew and two species near threatened birds within a short period of study and this record indicate that Dharmadam estuary may be attracting more number of migratory bird species. A long-term study is needed to understand the seasonal variation of the bird species in Dharmadam estuary in Kannur district.

We assessed species diversity and relative abundance during February - March by employing transect method in four line transects and 30 point count stations, and associated threats by direct observations and consultation with people (n= 1) living in vicinity of Phewa wetland. We counted 2651 bird individuals of 148 species belonging to 104 Genera of 44 Families under 11 Orders. Anatidae and Passeriformes with 11% and 39%, respectively were the dominant family and order among the recorded species. Out of these, seven bird species were globally threatened and 12 were nationally threatened. Terrestrial birds had higher species diversity (H'= 3.27), species richness (R= 11.98) and species evenness (e= 0.74) as compared to wetland birds (H' = 3.07, R= 8.44 and e = 0.73). Common pigeon (7.50%) was the most abundant bird followed by lesser whistling duck (6.98%). People in the vicinity of Phewa wetland reported that water pollution caused by domestic sewages and waste water disposal was the major threat to birds and their habitat. Phewa wetland is providing crucial habitat to adequate residential and migratory bird species for which it should be protected for further enhancement of number of avian species.

Wetlands are very fragile and constitute treasure of biodiversity. The avifaunal diversity in Ousteri freshwater wetland, Puducherry, India, was studied to form a baseline data about several local and migratory bird species of this wetland. Birds are surveyed by direct sighting, calls and variable width line-transect method was carried out in December, 2009 to January, 2010. It resulted in total of 109 species of both migratory and local birds. Such unique diverse systems are under threats like reduction in water retention in this pond in summer, weed infestation; variations in food availability in different seasons, hunting, poaching and threat of predation on the breeding activity of birds affected the avifauna diversity in the study area.DOI: 10.3126/on.v8i1.4335

Abstract: The contour feathers of water birds are well-known to show structural details in their distal one-third that optimally confer water repellency and resistance to water penetration. In this study, these details were further examined to see if they also provide resistance to the impact forces of diving and alighting. To this end, 49 species representing 37 water bird families were grouped into nine foraging niches before measurement of length, diameter, and spacing of their barbs. Twelve land bird species grouped into two foraging niches were included in this study for comparison. These measurements allowed the calculation of the ranges and medians for barb stiffness and vane deflection for each foraging niche. A phylogenetic ANOVA approach was followed to determine if the foraging niches for water and land birds explain differences in feather microstructure while accounting for phylogenetic relationships. There were no significant group aggregations for water or land birds confirming the statistical reliability of the ANOVA approach. Differences between the deflection parameter medians of water and land bird foraging niches proved significant demonstrating an evolutionary distinction between these groups. No such difference was observed for the two land bird foraging niches indicating similarity in feather structure. For the water birds, significance was found among all aquatic niches showing that differences in feather microstructure are associated with respect to differences in aquatic feeding niches. These findings support the notion that evolutionary adaptations of feather traits are significant across bird species and their respective foraging niches. The observed mechanical and morphological variations of feathers are therefore considered adaptations to different habitats and behavioral patterns.
