This article concerns the history of the curb cut metaphor as applied to personal computer technology in the 1980s. Disability advocates used the metaphor to argue the necessity for accessibility features on computers to enable greater access. To accomplish this goal, these advocates utilized a complex comparison between personal computers and sidewalk ramps to combat assumptions about who the intended computer user was and to argue for how people with different abilities could operate the same technology.

This paper reviews the evolution of process simulation in conjunction with the evolution of computer hardware and software technologies from a chemical engineering perspective. A brief history of this hardware evolution is presented and points to exponential growth of computing power. The current personal computers or full function workstations have at least 1GB of memory, 100GB hard drive and run at 4 GHz. We as chemical engineers can only benefit from this continued hardware evolution, as the personal computer has become our full function slide rule.Concurrent with this hardware evolution there has been a proliferation of operating systems and applications software. Some of the applications software has migrated from mainframes and minicomputers and some has been specifically written to take advantage of the user-friendly features available on today's personal computers. A review of this software is presented with particular emphasis on process simulation software. The currently available fifth generation, non-sequential interactive process simulator does make process modeling and design a truly rewarding experience. This software has been designed to allow the personal computer and the engineer to do what each does best, namely the personal computer performing the systematic number crunching and the engineer the intuitive aspect of process simulation and design. The paper will conclude with a look into the future development of process simulation and its interaction with chemical engineering practice.

Pemeliharaan pada pesawat terbang harus tercatat rapi dan lengkap menurut CASR Part 145, dimana salah satu pencatatan pemeliharaan yaitu catatan pada setiap komponen yang mengalami kerusakan dan perbaikan. Semua dicatat berdasarkan lokasi komponen, tanggal ditemukan dan dokumen yang berkaitan dengan kerusakan dan perbaikan tersebut. Contoh catatan pemeliharaan adalah dent and buckle chart (DBC). Dent and buckle chart yaitu catatan kerusakan dan perbaikan yang telah dilakukan pada struktur pesawat terbang. Fungsi dari DBC ini yaitu untuk memudahkan dalam pencarian riwayat kerusakan dan perbaikan pada pesawat terbang. Penelitian ini berupa rancang bangun perangkat lunak database DBC, tujuannya memudahkan pencatatan DBC, dan penggunaannya dapat diakses di semua device seperti PC (Personal Computer) dan smartphone. Perangkat lunak ini berupa website yang diberi nama “Sysdnb” dan telah dibuat untuk mencatat kerusakan dan perbaikan yang ada pada pesawat tipe B737-800. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pertama mengumpulkan data catatan perbaikan dan kerusakan B737-800, kemudian membuat Sysdnb dan input data catatan ke database. Setelah selesai membuat Sysdnb dan data sudah ter-input adalah trial Sysdnb. Hasil trial menunjukkan pencatatan kerusakan dan perbaikan pada pesawat B737-800. Sysdnb ini berhasil dibuat untuk memudahkan personil lapangan dalam melakukan pencarian riwayat kerusakan dan perbaikan pada pesawat B737-800 dan keterbatasan dari sysdnb ini yaitu tetap harus membuka dokumen SRM secara manual. Abstract - Maintenance on an aircraft must be neatly and completely recorded according to CASR Part 145, where one of the maintenance records is a record of each component that is damaged and repaired. All are recorded based on the location of the component, date found and documents relating to the damage and repair. Examples of maintenance records are the dent and buckle chart (DBC). Dent and buckle chart is a record of damage and repairs that have been made to aircraft structures. The function of this DBC is to facilitate the search for a history of damage and repairs to aircraft. This research is in the form of DBC database software design, its purpose is to make it easier to record DBC, and its use can be accessed on all devices such as PCs (Personal Computers) and smartphones. This software is in the form of a website called "Sysdnb" and has been made to record the damage and repairs that exist on the type B737-800 aircraft. The method used in this study is to first collect the B737-800 repair and damage log data, then create a Sysdnb and input the log data to the database. After completing Sysdnb and the data has been input is a trial Sysdnb. The trial results show the recording of damage and repairs on the B737-800 aircraft. This system was successfully created to facilitate field personnel in searching for a history of damage and repairs on the B737-800 aircraft and the limitation of this system is that it still has to open SRM documents manually.

This article examines the cultural impact of personal computers in Italian literature in the first decade of their mass diffusion (from the mid-1980s to the second half of the 1990s) through the analysis of four texts written by some of the most respected writers of the time: Primo Levi’s article “Personal Golem” (1985), Umberto Eco’s novel Il pendolo di Foucault (1988), Francesco Leonetti’s novel Piedi in cerca di cibo (1995), and Daniele Del Giudice’s story “Evil Live” (1997). More than simply addressing the advent of personal computers, what these texts have in common is the use of religious images and metaphors in order to make sense of the new technology. This study aims at showing how this frame of reference served the four writers in expressing the contradictions inherent to the machine. Bulky and tangible because of its hardware, but animated by an elusive and mysterious software, the personal computer was perceived at the same time as a dull office appliance and a threatening virtual entity. Finally, by showing how timely and well-informed these literary works on the impact of PCs are, this article wants to make the case for considering the role of literature in shaping computer culture.

The use of personal computers to aid in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of individual psychoeducational tests is growing. Currently computers are used to assist in managing assessment information, scoring and interpreting tests, and administering tests of cognitive abilities, academic skills, adaptive behaviors, and social skills. Although the content validity of assessment instruments developed for computer administration may have certain practical limitations, several useful advantages can be gained by using the computer to administer tests. Some of the advantages include improved levels of standardization in the procedures used during test administration, scoring, and interpretation; the collection of response data in real time; and the development and use of assessment models that were heretofore too complex for human presentation.

AbstractA user-friendly, personal computer (PC) based routine called SLIM [Simulation of Laser Interaction with Materials] has been developed to understand the non-equilibrium effects of high intensity, short laser pulses on different materials. By employing an accurate implicit finite difference scheme with varying spatial and temporal node dimensions, the time-dependent thermal history of laser-irradiated material can be accurately and quickly determined. This program can take into account the temperature dependent optical and thermal properties of the solid, time dependent laser pulse intensity, and formation and propagation of the melt and/or vaporization interfaces induced by intense laser irradiation. The program can also simulate thermal effects on multilayer structures exposed to pulsed laser irradiation It is expected that this simulation routine will be indispensable to all researchers working in the area of pulsed laser processing of materials, including rapid heating, melting, annealing, laser doping, laser deposition of thin films and laser solidification processing.

AbstractObjective:A computer virus outbreak was recognized, verified, defined, investigated, and controlled using an infection control approach. The pathogenesis and epidemiology of computer virus infection are reviewed.Design:Case-control study.Setting:Pharmacy of a tertiary care teaching institution.Results:On October 28, 1991, 2 personal computers in the drug information center manifested symptoms consistent with the “Jerusalem” virus infection. The same day, a departmental personal computer began playing ‘Yankee Doodle,” a sign of “Doodle” virus infection. An investigation of all departmental personal computers identified the “Stoned” virus in an additional personal computer. Controls were functioning virus-free personal computers within the department. Cases were associated with users who brought diskettes from outside the department (5/5 cases versus 5/13 controls, p = .04) and with College of Pharmacy student users (3/5 cases versus 0/13 controls, p = .012). The detection of a virus-infected diskette or personal computer was associated with the number of 5 1/4-inch diskettes in the files of personal computers, a surrogate for rate of media exchange (mean= 17.4 versus 152.5, p = .018, Wilcoxon rank sum test). After education of departmental personal computer users regarding appropriate computer hygiene and installation of virus protection software, no further spread of personal computer viruses occurred, although 2 additional Stoned-infected and 1 Jerusalem-infected diskettes were detected.Conclusions:We recommend that virus detection software be installed on personal computers where the interchange of diskettes among computers is necessary, that write-protect tabs be placed on all program master diskettes and data diskettes where data are being read and not written, that in the event of a computer virus outbreak, all available diskettes be quarantined and scanned by virus detection software, and to facilitate quarantine and scanning in an outbreak, that diskettes be stored in organized files.
