Art as a Future-Generating Machine: Rheinberger's Experimentalism in Practice-Based Arts Methodologies

Abstract This article explores the potential syntheses between practice-based arts research methodologies and the historian of science Hans-Jörg Rheinberger's framing of the scientific ‘experiment.’ Rheinberger offers the experiment as a ‘future-generating machine' resulting from materials discursive processes enacted as ‘repetition with difference’. This framing of epistemological development has applications in practice-based methodologies through their simultaneous execution of action and reflection, as well as the importance of ‘surprise’ in experimental practice.

Abstract This commentary focuses on three points: the need to consider semiotic ideologies of both researchers and autistic people, questions of commensurability, and problems with “the social” as an analytical concept. It ends with a call for new research methodologies that are not deficit-based and that consider a broad range of linguistic and non-linguistic communicative practices.

There is an increasing need for organizations to adapt to rapid changes in society. This need requires organizations’ and the leader within them, to explore, recognize, build and exploit new capabilities. Researching such capabilities has drawn attention from the design management research community in recent years. Dominantly, research contributions have focused on perspectives of innovation and the strategic application of design with the researcher distanced from context. Descriptive and evaluative case studies of past organizational leadership have been vital, by building momentum for the design movement. However, there is a need now to progress toward prescriptive and explorative research perspectives that embrace context through practice and the simultaneous research of design.  Therefore, the aim of this track is to lead and progress discussion on research methodologies that support the research community in developing explorative and prescriptive research methodologies for context-orientated organizational research. This track brings together a group of diverse international researchers and practitioners to fuel discussion on design approaches and subsequent outcomes of prescriptive and explorative research methodologies.

In recent years, arts festivals around the globe have become enamoured of touring, site-based performance. Such serialised site work is growing in popularity due to its accessibility, its spectacular characteristics, and its adaptive qualities. Employing practice-as-research methodologies to dissect the basis of such site-adaptive performances, the author highlights her discovery of the crumbling foundation of the adaptation discourse by way of her creative process for the performance work Room. Combining findings from the phenomenological explorations of her dancing body as well as from cultural analyses of the climate change debate by Dipesh Chakrabarty (2009), Claire Colebrook (2011, 2012), and Bruno Latour (2014), the author argues that only by fundamentally shifting the direction of the adaptation discourse – on scales from global to the personal – will we be able to build a site-adaptive performance strategy that resists the neoliberal drive towards ecological and economic precarity.

The sudden shift to distance learning caused by the COVID-19 virus emergency has posed a serious challenge to schools. This article presents a successful model for applying the STEM approach in science education at the Alexander Georgiev-Kodzhakafaliyata Primary School in Burgas. In the conditions of synchronous distance learning in MS Teams environment, students conduct experiments with handy tools and materials at home, during online classes or as homework assignments, then describe the experiments in presentations and share them with their classmates during the project week ( April holidays and at the end of the year). The application of STEM home laboratory combines knowledge from different disciplines, diversifies and facilitates learning, enables learning by doing things, which most stimulates the curiosity of students. Thus, they casually acquire skills for planning and conducting a scientific experiment, generating hypotheses and reasoning, measuring results and formulating conclusions. At the same time, soft skills for teamwork, creative and critical thinking, presentation skills are formed and upgraded.

Landslides and flash floods result in many fatalities around the globe. Understanding what triggers these events is therefore vital, although how to approach this problem is not straight forward. After background information for the experiment and some guidelines, two options are presented to learn more about the triggers of debris flows: (A) using rainfall or (B) the atmospheric conditions. You can then choose the option that appears more useful and interesting to you (you can always go back and read the other experiment afterwards). The article then ends with a reflection on the results.
