More clinicians are using mindfulness-based therapeutic strategies; however, Evangelical Christian clients sometimes worry about the Buddhist origins of these treatments. Christian accommodative mindfulness (CAM) attempts to address these concerns with culturally sensitive adaptations to mindfulness methods. We present a definition of CAM and propose some worldview adjustments to typical mindfulness constructs when working with these clients. The empirical research on Christian-derived meditation strategies and Christian-adapted mindfulness strategies will then be reviewed. We introduce a four-session group CAM protocol currently being researched that focuses on scripture meditation, breath meditation, body awareness, and loving-kindness meditation. Sample scripts are included.

Abstract Background Despite the benefits of genetic counseling (GC) and testing, uptake of cancer genetic services is generally low and African American (AA) women are substantially less likely to receive genetic services than non-Hispanic White women. Our team developed a culturally sensitive, narrative decision aid video to promote uptake of GC among AA women at risk for a hereditary breast cancer syndrome. We report here a pilot study to demonstrate feasibility and acceptability of incorporating this intervention in conjunction with population-based cancer risk assessment in a clinical setting with medically underserved AA women. Methods AA women recommended for GC based on cancer genetic risk assessment performed in a mammography center were recruited at the time of the mammogram. A prospective, pre-post survey study design, guided by theoretical constructs, was used to evaluate baseline and immediate post-intervention psychosocial factors, including intention to participate in GC and intervention satisfaction. Results Pilot recruitment goals were met (n=30). Pre-intervention, 50% of participants indicated that they were extremely likely to make a GC appointment, compared with 70% post-intervention (p=0.0001). After watching the intervention, 50% of participants indicated that the video changed their mind regarding GC. Conclusions This study demonstrated cultural acceptability of a decision aid intervention designed to motivate AA women with hereditary breast cancer risk to attend a GC appointment. Our study showed that intention may be a specific and key construct to target in interventions designed to support decision-making about genetic services. Study results informed the design of a subsequent large scale, randomized implementation study.

Missionary Christianity was introduced into Africa by Western and American missionaries whose theological framework shaped Christianity in Africa. Since theology is contextually informed, missionary theological formulations failed to meet Africa’s needs in many respects. In response, the African church began a quest for an African-brewed theology that is culturally sensitive and contextually relevant. For some time now this quest has engaged many African scholars; yet, no scholarly consensus has been reached regarding the nature and methodology for African Christian theology. This article contributes to the ongoing discourse by examining the emergence and development of African Christian theology and afterward, outlining some essential features that must characterize African Christian theology to make it accessible to and acceptable by the African Christian community. It is a literature research based on critical examination of related publications on African Christian theology. The article offers a model for contemporary Christians who are engaged in or desire to undertake theological research for the benefit of Christianity in Africa. The purpose of this study was to examine the expectations from Adapted Physical Education services from the perspective of Asian parents (n = 8) who have children with disabilities. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews, completed in the participants’ preferred language. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s recipe for thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: (a) “overcoming” the disability in APE, (b) different perspectives on the importance of APE between mothers and fathers, (c) parents’ concern over children being “disrespectful,” and (d) communication issues. Since the culture in the United States is ethnically and socially more diversified, the significance and relevance of the results for effective, culturally sensitive APE provision is discussed. An increased understanding and involvement of Asian parents in terms of their children’s APE program will result in more culturally sensitive, effective, and relevant APE experiences.
