Redescription of Pungentus pungens Thorne & Swanger, 1936 (Dorylaimida: Nordiidae), with a revised taxonomy of the genus

Pungentus pungens, the type species of its genus, is re-described and illustrated on the base of type material and recently collected specimens. It is characterised by a body 1.51-2.04 mm long and comparatively slender (a = 40-54), 9-12 μm broad lip region offset by weak but perceptible constriction, odontostyle 18-23 μm long, neck 343-395 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 48-57% of total neck length, uterus simple and 34-54 μm long or 0.8-1.6 corresponding body diam., V = 45-52, tail short and rounded (21-29 μm, c = 66-86, c′ = 0.8-1.1) with abundant saccate bodies, spicules 47 μm long, and ten widely spaced ventromedian supplements lacking a hiatus. An emended diagnosis is proposed forPungentusand its separation from the most similar genera is discussed. Sixteen valid species as well as onespecies inquirendaand threespecies incertae sedisare listed. Two new synonymies are proposed:Pungentus maoriumofP. silvestris, andP. minnsiofP. pungens.Pungentus mosellaeis herein consideredspecies incertae sedis. A dichotomous key to species identification and a compendium of their morphometrics are also provided.

A complete revision of the world species of the genus Phaenoglyphis Förster, 1869 has been conducted. A total of 25 species of Phaenoglyphis are valid after studying their type material. Two new species are described: Phaenoglyphis belizini sp. n. and Phaenoglyphis palmirae sp. n. Two species are synonymized: P. dolichocera (Cameron, 1889) with P. nigripes (Thomson, 1877) and P. pecki Andrews, 1978 with P. villosa (Hartig, 1841). Phaenoglyphis bangalorensis Kurian, 1953 was considered as incertae sedis. Phaenoglyphis duplocarpentieri (Kieffer, 1904) and P. hedickei Hedicke, 1928 are considered lost. Other three species are discarded as valid species because they are missing important parts without which the species cannot be defined: P. cincta (Hartig, 1841), P. frigidus (Belizin, 1968) and P. repentinus Belizin, 1962. A complete redescription and an illustrative plate are presented. A key to species of the genus Phaenoglyphis is given. Phylogenetic analysis based on morphological characters has been performed.

Both sexes of a new species, Stylicletodes wellsi sp. nov. (Harpacticoida: Cletodidae), are described from material collected from sediments in the East China Sea. The new species belongs to a species group whose members are characterized by an anal operculum that has a backwardly directed, median linguiform process and fifth legs that display naked or sparsely pinnate armature elements in both sexes. Within this group, S. wellsi sp. nov. is morphologically closest to S. reductus Wells, 1965 but differs primarily from its European congener in the armature pattern of P4 (both rami) and the female P5. Distribution records of all species are summarized and an updated identification key to the seven valid species in the genus is presented. Taxonomic issues related to the type species S. longicaudatus (Brady, 1880) are briefly discussed.

This study concerns the diplopod genus Eucampesmella Schubart, 1955, widespread in Brazil. After this work, the genus includes 12 valid species, and three incertae sedis: E. pugiuncula (Schubart, 1946), E. brunnea Kraus, 1959 and E. schubarti Kraus, 1957. The type-species, Eucampesmella tricuspis (Attems, 1931), is redescribed based on the holotype, and the following six new Brazilian species are added: Eucampesmella macunaima sp. nov. from the states of Rondônia, Pará, and Piauí; E. capitu sp. nov. from the states of Piauí and Paraíba; E. brascubas sp. nov. from the state of Sergipe; E. iracema sp. nov. from the state of Pernambuco; E. pedrobala sp. nov. from the state of Ceará; and E. lalla sp. nov. from the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Furthermore, E. lartiguei ferrii (Schubart, 1956) is recognized as a junior synonym of E. lartiguei lartiguei (Silvestri, 1897), which also had its status changed, and E. sulcata (Attems, 1898) is revalidated, prevailing under the name Leptodesmus tuberculiporus Attems, 1898. In addition, drawings, diagnoses, and distribution maps for all species of the genus are provided.

In this work, it is explained why previous authors who considered that Canthidium lentum Erichson, 1947 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) was fixed as the type species of Canthidium Erichson, 1847 in Robert Lucas’ 1920 catalogue of Coleoptera genera were mistaken. Instead, the first authors to designate a type species for Canthidium were Martínez et al. in 1964, who designated C. thalassinum Erichson, 1847. Since both species are currently placed in different subgenera, the subgeneric classication must change: Eucanthidium Halffter & Martínez, 1986 is a new junior synonym of Canthidium, while the subgenus previously considered to be Canthidium (Canthidium) is changed to Canthidium (Neocanthidium) Martínez et al., 1964 based on the revalidation of the latter name. A checklist containing information on the type locality, type material, synonymy, and distribution of all the 172 valid species included in the genus (72 in the nominotypical subgenus, 69 in Neocanthidium, and 31 as incertae sedis) is presented, as well as a review of the taxonomic history of Canthidium and the new synonymy between C. (C.) ardens Bates, 1887 and Canthidium ardens mutatum Bates, 1887.

Both sexes of Pseudoleptomesochrella halophila (Noodt, 1952) (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Ameiridae) are redescribed in detail based on material collected from the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Careful comparison revealed that the Turkish specimens are identical with the northwestern European populations originally reported from the Isle of Sylt (Germany) and the Isles of Scilly (U.K.). Re-examination of the type material of Nitocrella halophila brevifurca Wells, 1961 confirmed its conspecificity with P. halophila. Comparison of the various descriptions indicates the genus comprises two species complexes (Atlantic and P. halophila groups) whose members exhibit only cryptic differences, and that the majority of discrepancies reported in the literature are potentially unreal. Pseudoleptomesochrella pontica Apostolov, 1969 is removed from its synonymy with P. halophila and is reinstated as species inquirenda. A dichotomous key to species of Pseudoleptomesochrella Lang, 1965 is provided.

The hydrozoan genus Zyzzyzus is revised based on reexaminations of all available type specimens and on additional material. The taxon includes four valid species: Zyzzyzus spongicolus (von Lendenfeld, 1884), from the eastern Indian and southwest Pacific oceans; the type species, Z. warreni Calder, 1988, from the Atlantic, western Indian, and western Pacific oceans; and Z. floridanus Petersen, 1990 and Z. robustus Petersen, 1990, both from the northwest Atlantic. Although type specimens of Z. calderi Petersen, 1990 could not be located, it has been assigned here to the synonymy of Z. warreni because of similarities between the two in nematocyst dimensions, in number and structure of endodermal canals, and in external morphology of the hydrocaulus and hydrorhiza. A sixth nominal species (Corymorpha iyoensis Yamada, 1958) has on one occasion been assigned to the genus, but detailed studies of the type material are needed to resolve its taxonomic affinities.

The elateriform family Callirhipidae Emden, 1924 is catalogued. The family contains 14 genus-group taxa, of which 10 are currently considered as valid and four as synonyms. The family contains 214 available species-group names, of which 175 represent currently valid species and subspecies, and 39 are synonyms. For each taxon, all references known to the author are listed. For species-group taxa, type locality, type material, current status and known distribution are given. Lists of unavailable names and taxa excluded from the family Callirhipidae are presented. A systematic checklist of the family is appended. Both sexes of a new brackish-water species, Nannopus sinusalbi sp. nov. (Nannopodidae) are described from the Bahía Blanca estuary (38°53’S, 62°07’W) in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The only previous record of the genus in the study area was identified as the type species, Nannopus palustris Brady, 1880, with no description or illustrations, hence its authenticity cannot be confirmed. Nannopus brasiliensis Jakobi, 1956 is relegated to species inquirenda in the genus rather than being considered a junior synonym of the type species. Nomenclatural issues related to the usage of the alternative spellings Iliophilus Lilljeborg, 1902 and Ilyophilus sensu Sars (1909) and the unavailability of Ilyophilus canui Kim, Choi & Yoon, 2017 are discussed. An updated key to the 18 identifiable species of Nannopus (excluding the type species N. palustris) is presented. The harpacticoid assemblage at the type locality showed a distinct seasonality with N. sinusalbi sp. nov. representing about 8% of the community. The new species showed densities below 5 ind.cm‑2 during most of the year, reaching an abrupt peak of 40.17 ind.cm‑2 towards the end of the summer, when the maximum proportion of ovigerous females was recorded.

The Afrotropical species of Ootheca Chevrolat, 1837 are revised based on examination of 9560 specimens. Crioceris mutabilis Sahlberg, 1829, the type species, is redescribed including comprehensive illustrations of its external and genitalic characters. Synonymy with Ergana Chapuis, 1879 is confirmed. Genitalic structures, in particular the median lobe, allow reliable species identification in this genus. Of the 33 species originally described in Ootheca and Ergana, eleven remain in Ootheca, with four new synonymies, resulting in the following nine valid species: O. mutabilis (Sahlberg, 1829) (= Malacosoma bicolor Allard, 1889 syn. nov.; = O. punctata Laboissière, 1931 syn. nov.); O. proteus (Chapuis, 1879) (= E. bifrons Laboissière, 1937 syn. nov.); O. chapuisi (Jacoby, 1899); O. bennigseni Weise, 1900 (= E. variceps Laboissière, 1939 syn. nov.); O. orientalis Weise, 1900; O. kibonotensis Weise, 1909; O. variabilis (Laboissière, 1920); O. frontalis Laboissière, 1923, O. meridiana Grobbelaar, 2008. Four species are herein described as new: O. eddae sp. n., O. julianae sp. n., O. tilmani sp. n., and O. ugandae sp. n. Redescriptions or descriptions are given for each of the 13 species, including illustrations of habitus outline, colouration, shape of basal antennomeres and the median lobe. Studied material is listed in detail, photographs of the primary types, distribution maps and a key are given. The 22 remaining described species from Ootheca have been previously transferred to other genera or will be in subsequent publications.

The genus Haplosyllis Langerhans, 1887 is revised based on available types and newly collected specimens. 19 species are considered as valid, five as incertae sedis and four are referred to nomina dubia. Trypanoseta (Imajima, 1966) is synonymised with Haplosyllis, as the presence of trepan is considered a non-robust taxonomic feature, affecting H. ohma new comb. (Imajima & Hartman, 1964) and H. granulosa new comb. (Lattig, San Martín & Martín, 2007). Haplosyllis streptocephala (Grube, 1857) is a new combination and two species are considered to belong to Alcyonosyllis Glasby & Watson, 2001: A. bisetosa new comb. (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960) and A. gorgoniacola new comb. (Sun & Yang, 2004). All valid species are described and figured except those described during the last decade, which only includes diagnoses and chaetae illustrations. A dichotomous key to all valid species of Haplosyllis is provided.
