Calcatedessa gen.n. a new genus sister to Grammedessa Correia & Fernandes (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae, Edessinae) based on a cladistic analysis

Abstract Grammedessa Correia & Fernandes, 2016 is a genus raised to include some species of Edessa Fabricius, 1803 that is a very common group of stink bugs inhabiting only the Neotropical region. Grammedessa was proposed excluding a few species that were morphologically similar but not completely fitting in the diagnostic requirements of the genus. Grammedessa was also proposed without considering a phylogenetic context. In this work, the monophyly of Grammedessa was tested using a cladistic analysis, including all species that were originally excluded, under both Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian methods. As a result, six new species are now included in Grammedessa, which will be described in a forthcoming paper; Edessa botocudo Kirkaldy, 1909 was considered an unnecessary new name for Edessa hamata Walker, 1868 that was transferred to Grammedessa, resulting in G. hamata (Walker, 1868) comb.n. Calcatedessa gen.n., a new genus sister to Grammedessa, is here proposed to include four new species: C. anthomorpha sp.n., C. clarimarginata sp.n., C. germana sp.n. and C. temnomarginata sp.n. The Calcatedessa–Grammedessa clade and both genera were recovered as monophyletic by Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian methods. An identification key to the species of Calcatedessa gen.n. is provided. The new genus is distributed in Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana, and Brazil.

The Heteroptera (true bugs) and its fourth-largest family Pentatomidae (stink bugs) are worldwide distributed groups with higher diversity in the tropics. The pentatomid subfamily Discocephalinae is almost restricted to the Neotropical Region, and it is divided into the tribes Discocephalini and Ochlerini. Eurystethus Mayr, 1864 is placed within Discocephalini and comprises 18 species, 16 out of them classified into two subgenera. Here we describe Eurystethus jo sp. nov., Eurystethus multipunctatus sp. nov., and Eurystethus rufodorsatus sp. nov., all occurring in Brazil, compare them to other species and provide a distribution map.

Dentalion gen. nov. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Entedoninae), is described from the northern part of the Neotropical region, from Costa Rica to Ecuador and Brazil, and the Caribbean (Trinidad & Tobago). It comprises eleven new species: D. alveum, D. ambonatum, D. apertum, D. apon, D. crassicornis, D. jimenezi, D. mischum, D. noyesi, D. pinguicornis, D. pnigaliae, D. quadrifer. These species are diagnosed, described and illustrated, and a key for their identification is provided. Dentalion is characterized by two putative autapomorphies and two synapomorphies. The phylogenetic implications of these apomorphies are discussed briefly.

Cornugon gen. nov. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Entedoninae) is described from the Neotropical region, including ten new species from Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras and Mexico: C. albicoxa, C. anais, C. bicornis, C. diabolos, C. diceros, C. gibberum, C. leios, C. petiolatum, C. reticulatum, and C. unicornis spp. nov. The monophyly of the genus is demonstrated through two putative morphological autapomorphies. One of the autapomorphies is in a recently discovered character system, wing interference colour patterns (WIPs). WIPs are used here for the first time at the generic level for the classification of insects. Cornugon is compared to Pediobius Walker with which it shares the most apomorphies.

A new genus and two new species of Neotropical praying mantids are described: Chromatophotina awajun from Peru and Chromatophotina cofan from Ecuador. Study of the male genitalia suggests that Chromatophotina is a member of the tribe Photinaini, subfamily Photinainae, family Mantidae. Chromatophotina is distinguishable from other Photinainae by several unique characters, including the bright yellow-orange coloration of the metathoracic wings of the females, unique among the Photinainae. Additional remarks on the distribution and systematics of the new genus are also provided.

In the revision of the Ceratopogonini of the World, Wirth & Grogan (1988) placed the species of the Monohelea multilineata group in the new genus Downeshelea, which includes 33 species (Borkent, 2011), most of them known from the New World. Borkent and Spinelli (2000, 2007) listed 18 species from the Neotropical Region and Felippe-Bauer and Silva (2008) subsequently described D. oliveirai Felippe-Bauer from northern Brazil. From Mexico, only D. multilineata (Lutz) and D. panamensis (Lane & Wirth) have been reported.

Corotoca is a strictly Neotropical genus of termitophilous beetles associated with termites of genus Constrictotermes. A cladistic analysis based on 13 terminal taxa and 60 characters (57 morphological and three behavioral) was conducted. The exhaustive search with equally weighted characters resulted in two most parsimonious trees with 95 steps. Spirachtha is proposed to be the sister group of the monophyletic “subgroup Corotocae” (Corotoca + Cavifonexus gen. nov.), based on eleven synapomorhphies (ten exclusive and one homoplastic). The monophyly of Corotoca is supported here, including six species associated with Constrictotermes cyphergaster: (Corotoca hitchensi sp. nov + (C. melantho + C. pseudomelantho sp. nov.) + ((C. fontesi + (C. phylo + C. araujoi)). A new genus, Cavifronexus gen. nov., is proposed to two species associated with Constrictotermes cavifrons (Holmgren, 1910): Cavifronexus guyanae comb. nov., from Guyana and Brazil, previously described as Corotoca; and a new species, Cavifronexus papaveroi sp. nov., from Brazil. This work also includes descriptions, redescriptions, and illustrations for all species and genera. Keys for genera and species identification in “subgroup Corotocae” are also provided.

AbstractLecania chlorotiza and L. falcata, described here as new from Spain/Navarra, the Canary Islands and the Azores, do not belong to Lecania s. str. They belong to a strongly supported clade comprising Bacidia, Bacidina, Scutula and Toninia when examined with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences using mtSSU, nuLSU and nuITS sequences. This clade represents the Bacidiaceae and is included in the Ramalinaceae s. lat. Most genera included in that family need further work before a new genus can possibly be described for Lecania chlorotiza and L. falcata.

Phacopida from upper Whiterock (Lower Caradoc) horizons in the Las Aguaditas Formation of San Juan Province, Argentina, include the calymenid Platycalymene trapezoidalis (Baldis and Pöthe, 1995) and the encrinurids Frencrinuroides edseli new species, Lasaguaditas oweni new genus and species, and Walencrinuroides? new species A. Sulcocalymene Baldis and Pöthe, 1995, a purported subgenus of Flexicalymene, is a junior subjective synonym of Platycalymene Shirley, 1936. Platycalymene is now known from Avalonia, Baltica, Laurentia (Scotland), and the Precordillera. Emending the cladistic analysis of Ordovician Encrinurinae by Lespérance and Desbiens (1995), the monophyly and membership of Frencrinuroides and Walencrinuroides are ambiguous. Frencrinuroides edseli is closely related to species from eastern Laurentia. Lasaguaditas new genus is superficially cybelinid-like in some respects but shares several derived characters with the Encrinurinae. All three encrinurinid species in the Las Aguaditas Formation possess two instars in the protaspid period, a general pattern in Ordovician encrinurinid ontogeny.

Umbyquyra gen. nov., a new Theraphosinae genus with stridulatory bristles on the palpal trocanther of pedipalp trochanter and first leg, is proposed. The genus differs from the other genera with stridulatory bristles on the same segments, Acanthoscurria Ausserer, 1871, Cyrtopholis Simon, 1892, Longilyra Gabriel, 2014 and Nesipelma Schmidt & Kovarik, 1996, by having a palpal bulb with a very short and acuminate embolus and four short keels; separated tibial apophysis; and female spermathecae resembling those of Cyrtopholis, with two seminal receptacles with elongated ducts emerging from a common area. Cyrtopholis palmarum Schiapelli & Gerschman, 1945 and C. schmidti Rudloff, 1996 from Brazil and Acanthoscurria acuminata Schmidt & Tesmoingt in Schmidt, 2005 from Bolivia are transferred to the new genus. The female of Umbyquyra palmarum (Schiapelli & Gerschman, 1945) gen. et comb. nov. and the male of U. schmidti (Rudloff, 1996) gen. et comb. nov. are described for the first time. Cyrtopholis zorodes Mello-Leitão, 1923 is considered a junior synonym of Acanthoscurria gomesiana Mello-Leitão, 1923 and Cyrtopholis meridionalis (Keyserling, 1891) is considered a nomen dubium. Eight new species from Brazil are described: Umbyquyra paranaiba gen. et sp. nov., U. cuiaba gen. et sp. nov., U. araguaia gen. et sp. nov., U. sapezal gen. et sp. nov., U. belterra gen. et sp. nov., U. caxiuana gen. et sp. nov., U. tucurui gen. et sp. nov. and U. tapajos gen. et sp. nov. Data and maps on the geographic distribution are provided.
