Long (2005) presented an infrageneric classification of the genus Asterella Palisot de Beauvois (1805: 257) where five subgenera and four sections were recognized. Two of the sections were placed under subgen. Wallichianae Long (2001: 43), sect. Californicae Long (2005: 257) and sect. Wallichianae Long (2005: 257). However, since the latter section was not automatically defined as an autonym directly under the genus Asterella, it needed a Latin description which was missing. In order to be able to use the name in the forthcoming world checklist of Hornworts and Liverworts (Söderström et al., in prep.), the section is validated here. Note that a Latin description is no longer needed under the current ICN (McNeill et al. 2012).

When Hodgson (1964) proposed the new family Phyllothalliaceae together with the initially monotypic genus Phyllothallia Hodgson (1964: 247) based on Phyllothallia nivicola Hodgson (1964: 247), she mentioned “This new family is not a splinter entity from any already recognized family, but is originated to contain a genus which in vegetative characters at least is completely different from any known genus. The characters of the family are those of the genus”. The first sentence specifies the features in which Phyllothalliaceae is different from the other families but not how these features differ and so it does not satisfy the requirement of Art. 38.1(a) for a description/diagnosis (see: Art. 38. 2. Ex. 4). Although Grolle (1972: 216) discussed the validity of the family and considered the second sentence fulfil the requirements for the valid publication, ICN (McNeill et al. 2012) allows a single description/diagnosis for monotypic genus and species only. Hence, the family Phyllothalliaceae lacked a description/diagnosis which was needed when proposed and it has never been validly published until now. In order to be able to use the name in the forthcoming world checklist of Hornworts and Liverworts (Söderström et al., in prep.), the family is validated here. Note that a Latin description is no longer needed under the current ICN (McNeill et al. 2012).

The liverwort family Frullaniaceae is circumscribed to include the single genus, Frullania, and has a complex and confusing taxonomical history. An overview is provided for the infrageneric classification adopted for the forthcoming worldwide checklist based on recent morphological and molecular studies. The genus is preliminarily subdivided into eleven subgenera, F. subg. Chonanthelia, F. subg. Diastaloba, F. subg. Diversitextae, F. subg. Frullania, F. subg. Homotropantha, F. subg. Mammillosae, F. subg. Meteoriopsis, F. subg. Microfrullania, F. subg. Saccophora, F. subg. Steerea, and F. subg. Thyopsiella, as well as several sections. However, some of the subgeneric divisions are only doubtfully recognized because there is still insufficient knowledge to arrive at a decision regarding their systematic status and placement. The taxa may be either originally not well described, not restudied recently or molecular analyses point to a more complex internal structure of the respective group. Fourteen new synonyms, eight new combinations, five new names, eight lectotypifications, and one new variety are provided.

 Recent molecular phylogenies of the Lepidoziaceae indicate that the current classification is incongruent with the phylogeny. Although substantial uncertainties remain, an interim classification is needed. The classification proposed includes a broader definition of the Lembidioideae, reinstatement of Neolepidozia and Tricholepidozia and the recognition of the new genus Ceramanus. While the Zoopsidoideae are unlikely to represent a monophyletic group, it is not yet possible to provide a phylogenetically accurate revision of this subfamily.

Abstract—We describe and illustrate Paepalanthus fabianeae, a new species of Eriocaulaceae from the central portion of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Previous phylogenetic evidence based on analyses of nuclear (ITS and ETS) and plastid (trnL-trnF and psba-trnH) sequences revealed P. fabianeae as belonging to a strongly supported and morphologically coherent clade containing five other species, all of them microendemic, restricted to the Espinhaço range. Due to the infrageneric classification of Paepalanthus being highly artificial, we preferred not assigning P. fabianeae to any infrageneric group. Paepalanthus fabianeae is known from two populations growing in campos rupestres (highland rocky fields) in the meridional Espinhaço Range. The species is characterized by pseudodichotomously branched stems, small, linear, recurved, and reflexed leaves, urceolate capitula, and bifid stigmas. Illustrations, photos, the phylogenetic position, and a detailed description, as well as comments on habitat, morphology, and affinities with similar species are provided. The restricted area of occurrence allied with threats to the quality of the habitat, mainly due to quartzite mining, justifies the preliminary classification of the new species in the Critically Endangered (CR) category using the guidelines and criteria of the IUCN Red List.
