Molecular and morphological evidences reveal two new species in Grammothele and Theleporus (Basidiomycota) from southern China

Two new wood-decaying polypores from southern China, Grammothele separabillima and Theleporus rimosus, are described and illustrated using morphological characteristics and rDNA ITS sequences. Grammothele separabillima is characterized by its easily separable basidiocarps, poroid hymenophore with hymenium restricted to the base of the tubes, a dimitic hyphal system, pale brown skeletal hyphae with dextrinoid reaction, presence of dendrohyphidia, and oblong ellipsoid basidiospores. Theleporus rimosus is characterized by its resupinate, cracked basidiocarps, shallow poroid hymenophore with hymenium restricted to the base of the tubes, a di-trimitic hyphal system with dendroid and non-dextrinoid skeletal hyphae, presence of dendrohyphidia and ellipsoid to fusiform basidiospores. The discriminating characters of these two new species and the closely related species are discussed.

Two new species of Perenniporia, P. pseudotephroporasp. nov. and P. subcorticolasp. nov., are introduced respectively from Brazil and China based on morphological characteristics and molecular data. Perenniporia pseudotephropora is characterised by perennial, pileate basidiocarps with distinctly stratified tubes, grey pores, tissues becoming dark in KOH, a dimitic hyphal system with slightly dextrinoid arboriform skeletal hyphae and broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, truncate, weakly dextrinoid, cyanophilous basidiospores, measuring 4.9–5.2 × 4–4.8 μm. Perenniporia subcorticola is characterised by resupinate basidiocarps, yellow pores with thick dissepiments, tissues becoming dark in KOH, flexuous skeletal hyphae, ellipsoid, truncate and slightly dextrinoid basidiospores, measuring 4.2–5 × 3.5–4.2 µm. The morphologically-similar species and phylogenetically closely-related species to the two new species are discussed.

A new wood-decaying polypore from southern China, Postia cylindrica, is described and illustrated using morphological characteristics and rDNA ITS sequences. The new species is characterized by resupinate to effused reflexed basidiocarps, cream to buff and azonate pileal surface, reddish-brown and incurved margin, gloeoplerous hyphal cells in cuticular layer, absence of cystidia, and cylindrical, thin-walled basidiospores. Molecular analyses confirm the phylogenetic position of the new species Postia. The discriminating characters of the new species and the closely related species are discussed.

Cortinarius alpinus as an example for morphological and phylogenetic species concepts in ectomycorrhizal fungiExtensive morphological and molecular analyses of closely related species from alpine, subalpine and montane habitats should enable a comparison of ecological, morphological and phylogenetic species concepts in ectomycorrhizal mushrooms. One fundamental question of this study was whether alpine species really exist, and which criteria, besides the specific habitat, could reliably be used for the de-limitation of such taxa. For this reason, 56 rDNA ITS sequences were generated or downloaded from GenBank for 10 closely related species of Cortinarius subgenus Myxacium, section Myxacium. Several collections were sequenced for each of the following taxa: Cortinarius absarokensis, C. alpinus, C. favrei, C. fennoscandicus, C. grallipes, C. mucosus, C. muscigenus, C. septentrionalis, C. trivialis and C. vernicosus. Moreover, spore statistics were carried out for 38 collections of alpine and subalpine taxa. These data provide clear evidence for C. favrei being a synonym of C. alpinus. C. absarokensis and C. alpinus can clearly be delimited based on pileus diameter and average dry weight per basidiome, even in overlapping habitats, but spore size and shape is not a good distinguishing character. Phylograms have very short branches, and base differences between ITS sequences are generally very low in this group, and give no resolution for the included taxa of this section. Based on these results, species concepts of ectomycorrhizal mushrooms are discussed in detail.

A new hydnaceous fungus, Phellodon subconfluens, from northeast China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and rDNA ITS sequences. The new species is characterized by circular to flabelliform basidiocarps, a greyish buff, brownish orange to reddish brown and obscurely zonate pileal surface with white, incurved margins, a monomitic hyphal system with simple-septate, generative hyphae, and broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, thin-walled basidiospores with echinulate ornamentation. Molecular analysis confirms the phylogenetic position of the new species in Phellodon. The discriminating characters of the new species and closely related species are discussed.

Crangonyx ephemerus n. sp. and Crangonyx pseudoephemerus n. sp. are described from the headwaters of the St. Marks River in Leon County, Florida, based on detailed morphological and molecular comparisons with the closely related species Crangonyx floridanus Bousfield, 1963. The morphological and molecular data, including three species delimitation models, lend support to the hypothesis that the taxon C. floridanus sensu lato represents a species complex. Diagnostic morphological characteristics are highlighted and discussed within this group to assist in future morphological analyses.

A new poroid fungus, Nigrofomes submelanoporus, from tropical China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. The new species is characterized by perennial, resupinate to effused-reflexed, woody-hard and dark gray to almost black basidiocarps, lacerate dissepiments, a monomitic hyphal system, the presence of cystidioles and hyphal pegs, and broadly ellipsoid basidiospores (4–5.1 × 3.1–4.3 µm). Molecular analysis based on ITS sequences demonstrates the phylogenetic position of the new species in Nigrofomes. The discriminating characteristics between the new species and closely related species are discussed.

Grammothele and Theleporus have a shallow pore surface, which makes them morphologically close to corticioid fungi. However, from a phylogenetic perspective, they are polyphyletic genera within the core polyporoid clade of the Polyporales. Eight specimens with a shallow pore surface from Hainan, southern China, were morphologically and phylogenetically studied. Among them, one was determined as Grammothele denticulata, four were identified as Theleporus membranaceus, and three are described as Grammothele hainanensis. G. hainanensis is characterized by the annual and resupinate basidiocarps with poroid to irpicoid hymenophore, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae and weakly dextrinoid skeletal hyphae, the presence of cystidioles, hyphal pegs and dendrohyphidia, and cylindrical, hyaline and thin-walled basidiospores. It is closely related to G. quercina in phylogeny. Morphologically, G. quercina differs in producing perennial basidiocarps with cream to pale greyish and larger pores. The morphological differences among the new species and other species were analyzed.

AbstractThe Aschistodesmini from the Solomon Island are reviewed. Besides clarifying notes on the status of the type and closely related species of Aschistodesmus, descriptive notes and illustrations of the gonopods of the Solomon species of this genus, particularly of those published by Chamberlin, 1920, under the generic name of Solomonosoma, are given. Two new species, A. spatulifer and A. tridentifer are described, and a key to the species is provided. From Rennell Island Dorcadogonus modestus gen. n., sp. n. is described.

Two new species of Nemouridae stoneflies, Amphinemura oblonga Rehman, Du & Zhao sp. nov. and Mesonemoura diqinga Rehman, Du & Zhao sp. nov., are described from China (Yunnan Province, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Shangri-la city, Gezan township, Langdu Village). Diagnosis, description of terminalia, illustration of terminalia appendages and terminalia similarities with closely related species are provided and discussed.

Six new species of the spider genus Tonsilla Wang & Yin, 1992 are described from southern China: T. jinyunensis sp. nov. (♂♀) from Chongqing, T. jiugongensis sp. nov. (♂♀) from Hubei, T. subtruculenta sp. nov. (♂♀), T. rutunda sp. nov. (♂♀) and T. yueliangensis sp. nov. (♂) from Guizhou and T. subrostrum sp. nov. (♂♀) from Hunan. In addition, T. yanlingensis (Zhang, Yin & Kim, 2000) is redescribed and its male is described here for the first time. Tonsilla subyanlingensis Liu & Xu, 2020 is transferred to Draconarius Ovtchinnikov, 1999, hence the new combination Draconarius subyanlingensis (Liu & Xu, 2020) comb. nov. is established. The female of T. subyanlingensis Liu & Xu, 2020 should be treated as T. yanlingensis (Zhang, Yin & Kim, 2000). Detailed descriptions, photographs of copulatory organs and somatic features, a distribution map and comparisons with closely related species are presented.
