A new brown-rot fungal species, Veluticeps fasciculata, is described from southern China. It is characterized by perennial effused basidiocarps with smooth or tuberculose hymenophore, nodose-septate generative hyphae, fasciculate cystidia (as hyphal pegs in hymenophore) and relatively small basidiospores. It occurs on wood of Cunninghamia and Cryptomeria. Although similar to Veluticeps berkeleyi, morphological and molecular (ITS rDNA sequences) data show that V. fasciculata is a distinct species. Complete description and illustrations are provided for the V. fasciculata. In addition, V. fimbriata is reported from China for the first time.

Abstract RFLP and sequences of ITS-rDNA of 45 populations of cyst-forming nematodes collected from different parts of Iran were analysed and identified as representatives of 21 species. Eight enzymes generated RFLP for all studied populations. Comparison of RFLP profiles and sequences of the ITS regions with published data confirmed the presence of Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi, H. glycines, H. hordecalis, H. latipons, H. schachtii and H. trifolii in Iran. RFLP patterns and ITS sequences for H. elachista, H. turcomanica, H. mothi and C. cacti were obtained for the first time in this study. Heterodera humuli, H. goettingiana, H. fici, H. elachista, H. turcomanica and Cactodera cacti are recorded for the first time in Iran. These results correspond with morphological and morphometric identification of the populations. Several populations were not identified at the species level and are attributed to Heterodera sp.; some of these may correspond to new species. Twenty-one new sequences from Iranian cyst-forming nematodes and 36 known sequences were used for the phylogenetic analyses. The cyst-forming nematodes formed several clades corresponding to their morphological features. Heterodera mothi and H. elachista clustered with high support with other Cyperi group species and H. turcomanica formed a moderately to highly supported clade with the Humuli group.

Ochrolechia kerguelensis Ertz & Kukwa is described as new to science from the subantarctic islands of Kerguelen. It is characterized by pruinose ascomata, usually 4-spored asci, large ascospores of 50–90 × 32–56 µm, the production of gyrophoric acid only in the apothecia and the lack of variolaric acid. A photobiont with cells containing orange guttules such as in trentepohlioid algae is recorded for the first time in the genus Ochrolechia, being present in O. austroamericana and O. kerguelensis. Ochrolechia antarctica is reinstated from the synonymy of O. parella and treated as a distinct species. Chemical and morphological differences between these taxa are discussed. Ochrolechia chilensis and O. deceptionis are treated as synonyms of O. antarctica. The phylogenetic placement of O. antarctica, O. austroamericana and O. kerguelensis is investigated using mtSSU rDNA sequences and a Bayesian analysis. A key to all fertile, saxicolous Ochrolechia species with a C+ red epihymenium occurring in the Southern Hemisphere is presented.

As a result of the first research on macrofungi on peat moss habitats in Montenegro, three species new to the Montenegrin mycobiota are presented and described: Entoloma conferendum, Hygrocybe coccineocrenata, and Hypholoma ericaeum. The descriptions are accompanied by photographs of the basidiomata on site and some microscopic characters. Additionally, the second Montenegrin record of Bovista paludosa is presented and described, for the first time with locality and habitat data. Species identifications were checked by comparing ITS rDNA sequences from samples with the sequences in GenBank.

Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on the Chinese species of Fibroporia were carried out. Fibroporia albicans sp. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of collections originating from Jiangxi and Xizang provinces, based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis of ITS rDNA sequences. Morphologically, it is characterized by resupinate, annual basidiocarps, white to cream-colored pore surface when fresh, becoming cream to cream-buff upon drying, small pores (6–8 per mm), presence of white to cream rhizomorphs, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, fusoid cystidioles, and oblong to ellipsoid basidiospores; moreover, it causes a brown rot. Molecular data suggested a close relationship between Fibroporia albicans and F. citrina. Six species of Fibroporia form a monophyletic entity with 100% MP and 1.00 BPP supports. An identification key to the Chinese species of Fibroporia is provided.

Hymenoporus paradoxus, a new marasmioid fungal species belonging to the new genus is described from southern China. It differs from all other marasmioid species by a true tubular hymenophore, a character previously unknown in marasmioid fungi, and from all other tubular agarics by a hymenophore attached to a free collarium, and central, tough, dark and filiform stipe. The additional diagnostic characters are small basidiocarps, mostly convex pileus, smooth, hyaline, non-amyloid spores, densely packed dendriform cheilocystidia, and pileipellis composed of repent hyphae densely covered with simple to coralloid excrescences, intermixed with dendriform cells. As peculiar morphological characters had indicated, molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the 28S rDNA sequences confirm phylogenetic position of the new species in Omphalotaceae and a need to establish a new genus. Color photographs of macro- and micromorphological characters, SEM microphotographs, and a phylogenetic tree based on the partial 28S rDNA gene are provided.

Abstract The mortality of a young elm Ulmus minor in 2014 in Geneva prompted a search for the microorganisms potentially involved. Symptoms included foliar chlorosis and wilting followed by defoliation of branches. Wood symptoms included a brown streaking of sap wood and brown stains in trunk and branches. The comparison of the resulting ITS rDNA sequences to the NCBI Nucleotide database allowed to identify 10 different organisms. The genus Geosmithia represented 48% of the isolates belonging to three species: Geosmithia langdonii (7 isolates) and 2 unknown morphologically and genetically different Geosmithia sp. 1 and sp. 2 (4 isolates). Geosmithia species are very little known ascomycetes, which have been recently shown to be opportunistic pathogens on broadleaved trees and conifers, living as saprobes in galleries of many bark beetle species. In the case described here, Geosmithia langdonii, and the unknown Geosmithia species were found in symptomatic wood while bark beetle galleries were found in close regions of the symptomatic wood. Geosmithia langdonii was the major fungus retrieved from the symptomatic wood and could have contributed, along with other identified fungal species, to a pathogenic complex producing symptoms similar to the ones of the Dutch Elm Disease and led to the dieback of this elm tree. Geosmithia langdonii and 2 yet unknown Geosmithia species (sp. 1 and sp. 2), different from any other reported Geosmithia species are reported from an elm tree in Switzerland for the first time.

This paper discusses the preliminary results of the first comprehensive survey of the spiders of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR) in Singapore. Two plots were established in each of the three zones of vegetation, viz., primary forest, old secondary forest, and maturing secondary forest. They were repeatedly sampled over an 18-month period. Sorting of the collection so far suggests that the three vegetation zones harbour rather different spider assemblages. Only ~9% of the total spider fauna recovered was shared by all three zones. The results have also yielded a preliminary picture of dominance, abundance and rarity. Although first intended to obtain a baseline for future quantitative analyses, the survey became a testing ground to modify and refine methodology so as to conduct future quantitative surveys with greater scientific rigour. Taxonomic work on the samples so far shows that the spiders in the BTNR span over 43 families, of which six families are listed for the first time in Singapore. The tally is summarised in an interim checklist of BTNR spiders. The checklist, with a total of 317 entries, shows that there are 158 described species of spiders in BTNR, of which 25 species are new records for Singapore. Another 159 morphospecies are provisionally recognised as distinct species, some of which may be new to science. Our observations during the survey have allowed us to provide a narrative of BTNR spider diversity against a backdrop of their microhabitat specialisation.

Bryophytes are the second largest group of land plants and are also known as the amphibians of the plant kingdom. 67 species of bryophytes have been reported from select locations across the state of Gujrat. The status of family fissidentaceae which is a large moss family is being presented in this paper. Globally the family consists of 10 genera but only one genus, Fissidens Hedw. has been collected from Gujarat. Fissidens is characterized by a unique leaf structure and shows the presence of three distinct lamina, the dorsal, the ventral and the vaginant lamina. A total of 8 species of Fissidens have been reported from the state based on vegetative characters as no sporophyte stages were collected earlier. Species reported from the neighboring states also showed the absence of sporophytes. The identification of different species was difficult due to substantial overlap in vegetative characters. Hence a detailed study on the diversity of members of Fissidentaceae in Gujarat was carried out between November 2013 and February 2015. In present study 8 distinct species of Fissidens have been collected from different parts of the state. Three species Fissidens splachnobryoides Broth., Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens curvato-involutus Dixon. have been identified while the other five are still to be identified. Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens xiphoides M. Fleisch., which have been reported as distinct species are actually synonyms according to TROPICOS database. The presence of sexual reproductive structures and sporophytes for several Fissidens species are also being reported for the first time from the state.

A new nematode species recovered from the laboratory culture ofDrosophila melanogasteris described and illustrated. The mass reproduction ofPanagrellus levitatussp. n. in the fly culture occurred several times and resulted in a significant reduction of the fly population. Nematode outbreaks happened after the introduction ofD. melanogasterto the culture from natural sources. The new species is morphologically similar toP. ulmi. Partial LSU rDNA and SSU rDNA sequences were obtained and subjected to phylogenetic analysis that demonstrated the affinity of the new species withPanagrellussp. ‘MC2014’ from a red palm weevil. For the first time, the dauer juveniles ofPanagrelluswere described.

Six new species of the spider genus Tonsilla Wang & Yin, 1992 are described from southern China: T. jinyunensis sp. nov. (♂♀) from Chongqing, T. jiugongensis sp. nov. (♂♀) from Hubei, T. subtruculenta sp. nov. (♂♀), T. rutunda sp. nov. (♂♀) and T. yueliangensis sp. nov. (♂) from Guizhou and T. subrostrum sp. nov. (♂♀) from Hunan. In addition, T. yanlingensis (Zhang, Yin & Kim, 2000) is redescribed and its male is described here for the first time. Tonsilla subyanlingensis Liu & Xu, 2020 is transferred to Draconarius Ovtchinnikov, 1999, hence the new combination Draconarius subyanlingensis (Liu & Xu, 2020) comb. nov. is established. The female of T. subyanlingensis Liu & Xu, 2020 should be treated as T. yanlingensis (Zhang, Yin & Kim, 2000). Detailed descriptions, photographs of copulatory organs and somatic features, a distribution map and comparisons with closely related species are presented.
