Freziera dasycarpa, a new species from the montane forest of Antioquia, Colombia, is described. The new species is compared with morphologically similar species and distinguished from them by a unique combination of characters, among them, notably the villous abaxial surface of the petals, ovary, and immature fruits, a feature otherwise, at present, unknown in the other species of the genus Freziera.

A new species of Bertolonia (Melastomataceae; Bertolonieae) endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is described and illustrated. Bertolonia organensis is known from only one locality in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, state of Rio de Janeiro. The main diagnostic characteristics that distinguish B. organensis are the leaves with bullate adaxial surface and foveolate abaxial surface, cordate base and seven acrodromous veins, petiole and hypanthium glandulose-punctate, setulose and setulose-glandulose, the external calyx lobes erect, thick, narrow-triangular, apex acuminate-glandulose, margin entire, not ciliate, and the anthers connective dorsally appendaged, trilobed or with an acute calcar. Comparisons with similar species, geographic distribution and habitat are presented for the new species, as well as a key to identify all Bertolonia taxa known from the state of Rio de Janeiro. Bertolonia organensis is classified as Critically Endangered (CR).

The vegetative and reproductive morphology of Vesselowskya Pampanini, southern marara, is described and illustrated in detail. The variation within V. rubifolia (F.Muell.) Pampanini sens. lat. is shown to be greater than has previously been recognised, with the differences identified supporting the recognition of a new segregate species, V. venusta Rozefelds, R.W.Barnes and Pellow sp. nov. Vesselowskya venusta occurs in the Barrington Tops Plateau of New South Wales and differs from V. rubifolia in possessing hairs on the abaxial surface of the sepals and lacking both a prominent distal connective protrusion on the anthers and colleters at the base of the stipules. The two Vesselowskya species are dioecious with a vestigial ovary in staminate flowers and reduced stamens in pistillate flowers. Dioecy is more pronounced in Vesselowskya, than in some Weinmannia species, and in both genera is expressed through reduction in the size of the ovaries in staminate flowers, and stamens in pistillate flowers. Vesselowskya shares with the other genera in the tribe Cunonieae (Pancheria, Weinmannia and Cunonia), a central column in the fruits, and Cunonia-type stipules, but differs from these genera in having valvate aestivation, digitate leaves, craspedodromous secondary venation with secondary veins terminating at a tooth, tuft domatia along the midrib, adaxial epidermal cells with strongly sinuous cell walls and the absence of hydathodes.

Kielmeyera ferruginosa, a new species of Calophyllaceae from the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia, is here described and illustrated. The species is critically endangered and can be easily distinguished from other Kielmeyera species by the rusty coloration of the trunk and branches, orange-colored latex, and the occurrence in flooded areas. It differs from the other species of the section Prolifera by the leaves with secondary veins relatively more distant from each other and prominent on the abaxial surface. Diagnostic characters and the state of conservation of the new species are discussed, and an identification key for K. ferruginosa and related species from series Rupestres and Neglectae is provided.

A new species of raninid crustacean, Vegaranina rivasi sp. nov, is described based on three specimens collected from a Late Cretaceous deposit in central Cuba. Previous studies assigned one of the specimens to Vegaranina precocia (Feldmann, Vega, Tucker, Garcia-Barrera & Avendano, 1996), a species described from the Late Cretaceous of Mexico. However, after collecting the new specimens and recent major revisions of the group, we identified a unique combination of characters in the Cuban specimens that separate them from the other species in the genus.

Amphipod species of the families Epimeriidae and Iphimediidae are recorded for the first time from Macquarie Ridge, asparsely sampled mid-ocean ridge between New Zealand and Antarctica. Epimeria ashleyi sp. nov. collected from twoseamounts on the Macquarie Ridge between 676–1025 m water depth is described in detail.Epimeria ashleyi sp. nov. can be distinguished from similar species by the unique combination of following charac-ters: pointed coxa 1–3, dorsal doublecarinae as well as three lateral projections on epimeral plates 1–3. The juveniles ofthe new species are described and are considerably different from the adults. Additionally, Labriphimedia pulchridentata(Stebbing, 1888), previously known only from Heard Island, is recorded from Macquarie Ridge seamounts with first images of its colour in life.

A new species, Hypogastrura sheyangensis, from East China is described. It belongs to H. manubrialis group of species within the genus and is easily separated from the other members of the group by a combination of characters, foot structure, furca, antennal sensilla, thoracic and abdominal chaetotaxy. A comparison is made between the new species, other species of Hypogastrura known from China and three other similar species in the genus.

The genus Blumenbachia is restricted to Southern South America and comprises 10 species. Within that genus, monophyletic B. sect. Blumenbachia is a clearly delimited group of four previously known species. Here, a new species from Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described. Blumenbachia amana differs from the known species in ovoidal (versus spherical) capsules and in the unique combination of the inflorescence characters of B. insignis with the leaf morphology of B. latifolia, while approaching the flower size of B. catarinensis. Like all its close allies, the new species is facultatively autogamous, but pollinated by a highly specialized pollinator in the wild. It is geographically isolated from the other species and only known from two collections sites.

A new species of calycophoran siphonophore, Tottonophyes enigmatica gen. nov, sp. nov., is described. It has a unique combination of traits, some shared with prayomorphs (including two rounded nectophores) and some with clausophyid diphyomorphs (the nectophores are dissimilar, with one slightly larger and slightly to the anterior of the other, and both possess a somatocyst). Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that the new species is the sister group to all other diphyomorphs. A new family, Tottonophyidae, is established for it. Its phylogenetic position and distinct morphology help clarify diphyomorph evolution. The function and homology of the nectophoral canals and somatocyst is also re-examined and further clarification is given to their nomenclature.

A new medium-sized species of Hippodonta (Bacillariophyceae) is described from Lake Qinghai, China. The morphology and ultrastructure of Hippodonta qinghainensis sp. nov. are described using light and scanning electron microscopy. This new species is compared with similar species of Hippodonta using conventional and geometric morphometric analyses. Hippodonta qinghainensis can be separated from the other species of Hippodonta by a unique combination of characters that include an elliptic-lanceolate to rhombic-lanceolate valve shape, non protracted apices, the absence of fascia, relatively coarse, uniseriate striae and the presence of two rows of lineolae around the valves apices.

Anthurium narae is described from the state of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. It occurs in a small forest fragment of semideciduous seasonal montane forest, a component of Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Descriptions, illustrations, photographs and comparison with other similar species of Anthurium sect. Urospadix are provided together with comments about geographical distribution, ecology, phenology, and conservation status.
