Recognition of a new species of Hedysarum (Fabaceae, Hedysareae) from China based on morphological and molecular evidence

A new species, Hedysarum cuonanum (Fabaceae, Hedysareae), is described from the eastern Himalaya in China. This new species is similar to H. xizangense, but differs by its lanceolate or narrowly elliptic leaflet blade, ovate or lanceolate bracteole about half the length of calyx tube, acute or obtuse standard apex, and mucronate keel apex. It also resembles H. longigynophorum, but can be distinguished by its leaflet blade with 13–19 secondary veins on each side, abaxial calyx tooth about 1.5 times as long as the adaxial teeth, standard as long as keel, and elliptic or ovate loment article. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ITS, ETS sequences, and the plastid psbA-trnH, trnC-petN, petN-psbM sequences showed that H. cuonanum is sister to H. xizangense, and the H. cuonanum + H. xizangense clade is then sister to H. longigynophorum.

A new species of Ranunculaceae, Semiaquilegia guangxiensis, is described and illustrated. The plant is morphologically similar to S. adoxoides, but it obviously differs from the latter by the following characteristics: stamens 20–30 (vs. 8–14 in S. adoxoides); staminodes ca. 10, half the length of the filaments (vs. ca. 2, as long as filaments in S. adoxoides); follicles ca. 1 cm long, ca. 3 mm wide (vs. 6–7 mm long, ca. 2 mm wide in S. adoxoides); seeds 1.5–2.5 mm long (vs. ca. 1 mm long in S. adoxoides). Its affinity to S. adoxoides and placement in Semiaquilegia are confirmed by phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F sequences.

A new species of Cymbidium (Orchidaceae), Cymbidium xichouense, from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological evidence and molecular analyses. The new orchid is morphologically similar to C. qinbeiense, but it has several morphological features that distinguish it from C. qiubeinense and all other recognized species in Cymbidium. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear (ITS) and plastid DNA (matK) were conducted, and the results also supported the status of C. xichouense as a new species, which is sister to C. qiubeiense.

A new species, Strobilomyces rubrobrunneus, is described from eastern China based on morphological and molecular evidence. Morphologically, this species is characterized by its tiny to small basidiomes, reddish-brown and more or less erect pyramidal scales, grayish black discoloration of the pileal context when bruised, reticulate spores and a subtropical distribution in a mixed forest of Fagaceae and Pinaceae. Our phylogenetic analyses based on four gene markers (rpb1, rpb2, tef1 and cox3) support its placement in Strobilomyces and its separation from other related species of this genus. Morphological illustrations and description are provided.

Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, Semiaquilegia danxiashanensis, a new species from Danxia Shan in northern Guangdong, southern China, is described and illustrated. This species is easily distinguishable from each of other three known species in the genus by characters of the flowers and fruits. In addition, molecular phylogenetic analyses of both the nuclear ITS and the plastid trnL-F region strongly supported S. danxiashanensis as a separate species from other species of Semiaquilegia. We provide a detailed morphological and habitat description, distribution, as well as colour photographs and illustrations of the new species.

A new species of the genus Panolis Hübner, [1821], P. xundian sp. nov., is described and illustrated from southwestern China. It is well-defined morphologically by the male genitalia, with a well-developed pollex at the distal terminal of the sacculus and a broad, ventrally concave cucullus, the female corpus bursae with four long signum-stripes. Based on a 658 bp segment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, we report the pairwise genetic distance of 2.5% from its allied species P. exquisita Draudt, 1950. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using three genes (2189 bp in total length) indicate that the new species belongs to the P. exquisita species group.

Two new genera with phylogenetic affinities to Phanerochaete s.l. are presented, namely Hydnophanerochaete and Odontoefibula. The generic type of Hydnophanerochaete is Phanerochaeteodontoidea. Odontoefibula is established based on a new species: O.orientalis (generic type). Both genera have effused basidiocarps with odontioid hymenial surface, simple-septate generative hyphae, cystidia lacking, clavate basidia and ellipsoid basidiospores that are smooth, thin-walled, inamyloid, non-dextrinoid and acyanophilous. Hydnophanerochaete is additionally characterised by a compact texture in the subiculum with thick-walled generative hyphae and quasi-binding hyphae. Odontoefibula has a dense texture of subiculum with thin- to slightly thick-walled hyphae and further a dark reddish reaction of basidiocarps when treated with KOH. Multi-marker phylogenetic analyses based on sequences, inferred from the ITS+nuc 28S+rpb1+rpb2+tef1 dataset, indicate that Hydnophanerochaete and Odontoefibula are placed in the Meruliaceae and Donkia clades of Phanerochaetaceae, respectively. Phanerochaetesubodontoidea is a synonym of P.odontoidea, according to morphological and molecular evidence.

Amana baohuaensis is described and illustrated as a new species from Jurong City, Jiangsu Province, East China. The new species is morphologically similar to A. edulis, but differs from the latter by having three verticillate linear bracts, white or purple-red solitary flowers, and purplish-brown anthers. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS, chloroplast matK and rps16 intron sequences confirmed that this new species is distinct from morphologically similar species.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

A new species of Gekko is described from the south slope of the west Qinling Mts in Gansu, China. Gekko wenxianensis, sp. nov., is characterized by its nostril-rostral contact, moderate sized body with dorsal tubercles extending from the occiput and temporal region to the back and tail base, but lacking on the forelimb and thigh, 6–8 precloacal pores in a continuous series in males, and tail generally with two cloacal spurs on each side. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using 1556 bp of mtDNA (825 bp COI and 731 bp cyt b) from 7 species of Gekko indicate that the new species is the sister taxon of G. japonicus. It is the twelfth species of Gekko recorded from China.

Abstract A new species of the genus Lyperosomum Looss, 1899, from the intestine of the golden-fronted woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) from northern Mexico is described. Lyperosomum cuauhxinqui sp. n. is morphologically distinguished from other congeneric species from the Americas by a higher oral/ventral sucker ratio and its body length and width. The sequences of domains D1–D3 of the large subunit (LSU) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) from the mitochondrial DNA of the new species were obtained and compared with available sequences from GenBank. The genetic divergence estimated between the new species and other congeneric species ranged from 2 to 6% and 13.4 to 17.3% for LSU and cox 1, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on the two (LSU and cox 1) molecular markers consistently showed that L. cuauhxinqui sp. n. was nested within the genus Lyperosomum, with strong bootstrap support (100%) and Bayesian posterior probabilities (1.0). In particular, the LSU tree indicated that the sequence of the new species is closely related to sequences from Zonorchis alveyi, Zonorchis delectans and Zonorchis sp. from Central America, suggesting that these sequences should be transferred to the genus Lyperosomum. The new species represents the first record from Mexico and the fifth species identified in the Americas. Our study also revealed that the taxonomy of the genus Lyperosomum should be re-examined by combining molecular, morphological and ecological characteristics.
