Nomenclatural novelties and typification of names in Scorzonera sensu lato (Asteraceae, Cichorieae) for the Italian vascular flora

According to recent molecular study, the genus Scorzonera sensu lato is polyphyletic. A revised circumscription of this genus was proposed with the recognition of seven genera: Scorzonera sensu stricto, Gelasia, Lipschitzia, Pseudopodospermum, Pterachaenia, Ramaliella, and Takhtajaniantha. Accordingly, a taxonomic treatment of the genus Scorzonera sensu lato for the Italian vascular flora is presented. Nomenclatural types for six names are designated here: Scorzonera calcitrapifolia var. decumbens, S. columnae, S. deliciosa, S. neapolitana, S. trachysperma var. undulata, and S. villosa. Furthermore, the following new combinations are proposed: Gelasia villosa subsp. columnae, Pseudopodospermum hispanicum subsp. asphodeloides, P. hispanicum subsp. neapolitanum, and P. undulatum subsp. deliciosum.

This paper reviews the taxonomy, evolution and phylogeographic aspects of the genus Helonias L. sensu lato, including Ypsilandra and Heloniopsis (Melanthiaceae) that are basically similar in many morphological and ecological characters to Helonias sensu stricto. It includes three parts, I–III. In Part I, characters and their variation are examined to determine generic traits and diversity. In Part II, an attempt is made to taxonomically determine diversity among individuals. Taxonomic conclusions and revisions are principally the following: Helonias comprises 12 species, which are classified into two sections, H. sect. Helonias and H. sect. Heloniopsis comb. & stat. nov. Helonias sect. Helonias consists of H. bullata only; H. sect. Heloniopsis comprises two subsections, H. subsect. Ypsilandra comb. & stat. nov. and H. subsect. Heloniopsis. Helonias subsect. Ypsilandra is composed of five species previously published under the genus Ypsilandra. Helonias subsect. Heloniopsis consists of two series, H. ser. Umbellatae ser. nov., with three species from Taiwan and the Nansei Islands (incl. the Ryukyus), Japan, and H. ser. Heloniopsis, with three species from Japan, Korea and E. Russia (southern Sakhalin). Helonias yunnanensis var. mesostyla is described as a new variety from N Myanmar and SW China (NW Yunnan). The new combinations Helonias koreana (from Korea) and H. parviflora (from China) are proposed. Lectotypes for Ypsilandra parviflora, Y. thibetica, Y. yunnanensis var. micrantha, Heloniopsis breviscapa and H. grandiflora are designated. A revised typification for Sugerokia japonica is proposed, negating a previous lectotypification. Heloniopsis tubiflora is reduced to synonymy under Helonias koreana. In Part III, the evolutionary and phylogeographic aspects of Helonias are discussed, and a phylogram inferred from cladistic analysis of phenotypic characters is presented. In the phylogram, Helonias is monophyletic, while H. sect. Helonias and H. subsect. Ypsilandra are respectively paraphyletic, and H. subsect. Heloniopsis is monophyletic. Incongruence in results between morphological and DNA sequence analyses is briefly discussed.

The present study forms part of the series of systematic and taxonomic contributions related to plant species of the Italian flora, and also other phanerogams, in light of recent biosystematic works of a molecular-genetic nature. <em>Caloscordum</em> and <em>Nectaroscordum</em> are separated from <em>Allium</em> s.l., <em>Holandrea</em> is included within <em>Dichoropetalum</em>, <em>Ficaria</em> is separated from <em>Ranunculus</em> and <em>Althaea</em> sect. <em>Hirsutae</em> is included within <em>Malva</em>. Confirmation is given for the inclusion of <em>Lavatera</em> within <em>Malva</em>, of <em>Aegilops</em> within <em>Triticum</em> and for the separation of <em>Phelipanche</em> from <em>Orobanche</em>. In addition some observations regarding the genera <em>Cytisus</em>, <em>Hippophaë</em>, <em>Portulaca</em>, <em>Rhaponticum</em>, <em>Senecio</em> and <em>Torilis</em> are presented. Finally new combinations and/or new names are proposed within the genera <em>Caloscordum</em>, <em>Nectaroscordum</em>, <em>Dichoropetalum</em>, <em>Ficaria</em>, <em>Hippophaë</em>, <em>Malva</em>, <em>Portulaca</em> and <em>Rhaponticum</em>.

With every molecular review involving Chitoniscus Stål, 1875 sensu lato samples from Fiji and New Caledonia revealing polyphyly, the morphology from these two distinct clades was extensively reviewed. Morphological results agree with all previously published molecular studies and therefore Trolicaphylliumgen. nov. is erected to accommodate the former Chitoniscus sensu lato species restricted to New Caledonia, leaving the type species Chitoniscus lobiventris (Blanchard, 1853) and all other Fijian species within Chitoniscus sensu stricto. Erection of this new genus for the New Caledonian species warrants the following new combinations: Trolicaphyllium brachysoma (Sharp, 1898), comb. nov., Trolicaphyllium erosus (Redtenbachher, 1906), comb. nov., and Trolicaphyllium sarrameaense (Größer, 2008a), comb. nov. Morphological details of the female, male, freshly hatched nymph, and egg are illustrated and discussed alongside the Chitoniscus sensu stricto in order to differentiate these two clades which have been mistaken as one for decades.

Apocynaceae sensu lato (s.l.) is treated as distinct family in some taxonomic systems while in others is treated as two separated families viz. Apocynaceae sensu stricto (s.s.) and Asclepiadaceae. So the main objective of the present study was to adopt one of the two views. The morphological characters viz. whole plant, lamina vein architecture and lamina epidermal characters of 20 wild and ornamental species were examined using LM and SEM. The data were numerically analyzed to detect the phenetic relationship among the studied species. DNA barcoding based on the sequencing of rbcL gene was cladistically analyzed to detect the phylogenetic relationship among the studied species. The generated phenogram showed a clear separation of two subseries; one of them belonged to Apocynaceae and the other with the remaining taxa belonging to Asclepiadaceae. The obtained cladogram showed that all of the studied species were divided into four lineages. It is concluded that the phenetic analysis supports the treatment of Apocynaceae s.l. as two distinct families; Apocynaceae s.s. Asclepiadaceae contrary of the phylogenetic one that supports the treatment of Apocynaceae s.s. and Asclepiadaceae as one family (Apocynaceae s.l.) with four subfamilies viz. Apocynoideae, Rauvolfiodeae, Asclepiadoideae and Periplocoideae. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

As part of ongoing efforts to understand and document the flora of the southeastern United States, a number of taxonomic changes at generic, specific, and infraspecific rank are made. We also discuss and clarify the recommended taxonomy for other taxa (not requiring nomenclatural acts) and present a point of view about the practical and philosophic basis for making taxonomic changes in an allegedly well-understood flora. The genera (and families) affected are Endodeca (Aristolochiaceae), Erigeron, Pityopsis, and Solidago (Asteraceae), Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae), Carex (Cyperaceae), Baptisia and Indigofera (Fabaceae), Salvia and Scutellaria (Lamiaceae), Stenanthium (Melanthiaceae), Epidendrum (Orchidaceae), and Andropogon, Coleataenia, Dichanthelium, Digitaria, and Panicum (Poaceae).

As part of ongoing efforts to understand and document the flora of the southeastern United States, we propose a number of taxonomic changes. In Trichostema, we name a new species, narrowly endemic to maritime grasslands in the Carolinas and warranting formal conservation status and action. In Dichanthelium (Poaceae), we continue the reassessment of taxa formerly recognized in Panicum and provide new combinations along with a new key to taxa in the Dichanthelium scabriusculum complex. In Paspalum (Poaceae), we address the controversial taxonomy of P. arundinaceum and P. pleostachyum and treat the two as conspecific, with P. arundinaceum the correct name. In Portulaca (Portulacaceae), we report the discovery of the Bahamian P. minuta as a native component of the North American flora, occurring in southern Florida.

The large syrphid genus Ocyptamus Macquart has been subject to scrutiny in recent years, resulting in a more narrowly defined monophyletic Ocyptamus sensu stricto. Some of the species excluded from this narrower concept of the genus are in evolutionary lineages for which generic names are available, but other species are in lineages for which generic names do not exist. The current paper presents five new genera to correct this: Fragosa gen. nov. (former Ocyptamus stenogaster group), Hypocritanus gen. nov. (former Ocyptamus fascipennis group), Maiana gen. nov. (former Ocyptamus callidus group), Nuntianus gen. nov. (former Ocyptamus lepidus group) and Victoriana gen. nov. (former Ocyptamus melanorrhinus group). In addition to the new combinations related to these new genera, Argentinomyia aenea (Williston) comb. nov., Hybobathus pola (Curran) comb. nov., H. subchalybeus (Walker) comb. nov., H. wilhelmina (Doesburg) comb. nov., and Leucopodella nasuta (Williston) comb. nov. are moved out of Ocyptamus. Ocyptamus isthmus Thompson is a jun. syn. of Callostigma panamensis Curran stat. rev. Relevant morphological characters and their taxonomic and evolutionary implications are discussed.
