Only a few bairdioid species were reported from the high Antarctic region of the Southern Ocean. One of these species is the supposedly widely distributed Bairdoppilata simplex (Brady, 1880). The re-study of material previously identified as Bairdoppilata simplex (Brady, 1880) indicates that these specimens should be assigned to several different species. On the basis of the specimens studied herein and of published illustrations it is possible to conclude that more than ten species are represented in the material that has been misidentified under this name, seven of these species were re-studied and are illustrated herein. One of them, Bairdoppilata labiata (Müller, 1908), previously considered a junior synonym of B. simplex, is herein considered a valid taxon and its lectotype is designated. Additionally, in the present publication 82 bairdioid live specimens and 585 valves collected from depths of 1123 to 4932m during the ANDEEP Project in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean were studied. Seven new species are described—?Neonesidea keyseri sp. nov., Bythocypris praerenis sp. nov., Bythocypris malyutinae sp. nov., Bythocypris polarsterni sp. nov., Bythocypris richarddinglei sp. nov., Bythocypris weddellensis sp. nov., Bythopussella brandtae sp. nov. A new combination is suggested to the bathyal species Bythopussella microguttata (Whatley et al., 1998b) n. comb. (previously described in the genus Bairdoppilata). Statistical analyses (MDS, ANOSIM, BEST_BIOENV, and Cluster) show clear relationships among the bairdioid assemblages and the depth and geographical locality where samples were collected.

Hudepohlellus Chemsak & Hovore, 2010, a monotypic genus, is considered a junior synonym of Monneellus Hüdepohl, 1985 and M. semilunatus (Chemsak & Hovore, 2010) is a new combination. Kozlovellus bicolor, a new genus and new species of Rhopalophorini is described from Costa Rica.

Orbitolina daviesi Hofker, 1966 (family Orbitolinidae) was validly described and thoroughly illustrated from Thanetian limestones of Pakistan. Although its attribution to the genus Orbitolina d’Orbigny and any phylogenetic relationships with the Cretaceous taxa have been refuted shortly afterwards, the species has not been taxonomically revised since then. Karsella hottingeri Sirel, 1999 was established as new genus and new species from the Thanetian of Turkey, without taking into account J. Hofker’s publication. The original description and genus diagnosis of Karsella has meanwhile been emended to include the occurrence of a radial zone with septula that follow a zig-zag pattern and associated linear arrangement of the foramina, as well as a complex embryo. Orbitolina daviesi clearly displays these features and is here considered a species of the genus Karsella Sirel. Karsella hottingeri is regarded as a subjective junior synonym of O. daviesi Hofker and therefore, the only species of the genus is given as a new combination: Karsella daviesi (Hofker). From a suprageneric viewpoint, the two Paleogene genera Karsella Sirel and Cushmania Silvestri display a complex embryo and might belong to a new subfamily of the Orbitolinidae, phylogenetically different and unrelated to the lower-mid Cretaceous Orbitolininae.

Three new species of the genus Belonectes Wilson & Hessler, 1981, from the munnopsid subfamily Eurycopinae Hansen are described from the deep Weddell Sea, Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Belonectes grasslei sp. nov., B. stoddarti sp. nov., and B. daytoni sp. nov. are the first species of the genus described from the region: previously only two species of Belonectes were known from the northeastern Atlantic and the Peru-Chile Trench, the southeastern Pacific. The modified diagnosis of the genus Belonectes and a key to the species of the genus are presented. The pattern of the total ventral sculpture of the natasome, a medial lobe of article 4 of the maxillipedal palp which is larger than article 5 and the navicular male pleopod 1 with its deep keel are suggested to be additional important generic characters of Belonectes. The most useful characters to distinguish species of Belonectes are the size of article 1 of the antennula, the shape and size of the articles 3–5 of the maxillipedal palp, the shape of the distal margin of the male pleopod 1, the shape of distolateral part of the protopod of the male pleopod 2, the size and shape of the preanal ridge, and the size of the exopod of the uropod.

The project ANDEEP was designed to fill gaps in the knowledge of the biodiversity of the Southern Ocean deep sea. Threeoceanographic cruises (ANDEEP I, II and III) were undertaken in 2002 and 2005 in the Atlantic Sector of the SouthernOcean. Hundreds of samples were collected from 40 stations with water depths ranging from 748 to 6,348 m. Investiga-tions were carried out on a broad range of taxa, including bacteria, meio-, macroand megafauna. Approximately 5000ostracods were collected, which included 29 specimens of Doloria (Dolorietta) subgen. nov.The subdivision of the genus Doloria Skogsberg, 1920 into two subgenera, Doloria (Doloria) and the novel subgenusDoloria (Dolorietta), is based on differences in the structures of the fifth limb, the armature of the sensory bristle on the5th segment of the antennula, and the number of bristles on the 4th endite of the sixth limb. Four new species in the newsubgenus were identified from the ANDEEP samples. The new subgenus and the four novel species are described andillustrated. Two of these new species are named Doloria (Dolorietta) antarctica sp. nov. and Doloria (Dolorietta) sextafiliformis sp. nov., but the other two species are left in open nomenclature (i.e. Doloria (Dolorietta) sp. nov. 1 and Doloria(Dolorietta) sp. nov. 2) because only juveniles were found in our material. Keys to the subgenera and species of Doloria are provided.

A taxonomic study of the green lacewing genus Austrochrysa Esben-Petersen, 1928 from China is presented. Three species of Austrochrysa are recorded from China. Two new species, Austrochrysa lihongyui sp. nov. and Austrochrysa angusta sp. nov., which are described in this study, and a new combination, i.e. Austrochrysa tropica (Yang & Wang, 1994) comb. nov., is proposed. The genus Yunchrysopa Yang & Wang, 1994 is here considered as a junior synonym of Austrochrysa Esben-Petersen, 1928.

The Ochlerini (Discocephalinae) are endemic in the Neotropical region, and the tribe currently contains 38 genera and 149 species. The monotypic Macropygium Spinola, 1837 is the most widespread ochlerine genus in the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. Macropygium reticulare (Fabricius, 1803) is one of the few Ochlerini of phytosanitary importance, transmitting Phytomonas spp. in palm crops in South America. Nonetheless its wide distribution, and phytosanitary importance, the taxonomy of Macropygium has been neglected. Here we present a revision of Macropygium, revalidate three species, Macropygium spinolae Stål, 1860, REVISED STATUS (removed from the synonymy with M. reticulare), Macropygium bifidum (Westwood, 1837), NEW COMBINATION (removed from the synonymy with M. reticulare), and Macropygium subsulcatum (Amyot & Serville, 1843), REVISED STATUS (removed from the synonymy with M. reticulare). We remove Ochlerus guttipes Walker, 1867 from the synonymy with M. reticulare, and propose O. guttipes a new junior synonym of M. spinolae. Finally, we describe one new species, Macropygium graziae Silva & Campos, Sp. Nov.. A key for the species of Macropygium is provided.

Previous records of Platycopida (Ostracoda) from the Antarctic region of the Southern Ocean include only a few fossil species from the Late Cretaceous to the Palaeocene: Cytherelloidea megaspirocostata Majoran & Widmark, 1998, [sic] Cytherella serratula (Brady, 1880), plus seven species left in open nomenclature. The present study documents the first record of a living platycopid from the Antarctic region and describes Cytherella rwhatleyi sp. nov. as new. Comparison among specimens collected at stations 60° longitude and 10° of latitude apart from each other show that very little intraspecific variation in outline and ornamentation of the valves, as well as on the hemipenis is presented by this new species. Otherwise, clear differences on valve and hemipenis are observed between different species (herein, Jellinek & Swanson 2003). Review of the literature indicates that several species (with great differences in valve outline and ornamentation) have been erroneously assigned to Cytherella serratula (Brady, 1880) demonstrating that this so-called cosmopolitan taxon is in truth most probably restricted to bathyal depths of the Northwestern Atlantic. Finally, the abundances of Cytherella rwhatleyi sp. nov. in the samples studied herein (considering O2 concentration measurements) contradict the proposed relationship between Platycopida and O2 concentration in water masses (Whatley et al. 2003).

Thiratoscirtina is an African endemic subtribe of aelurilline jumping spiders. Among the 18 genera belonging here, the genus Pochyta Simon, 1901 and its ten currently recognized species is yet to be revised, and the described species have been not studied from a taxonomical perspective. We examined all the species thought to belong here based on the type material. The limits of the genus are redefined. Pochyta moschensis Caporiacco, 1947 is proposed as the junior synonym of Natta horizontalis Karsch, 1879. Pochyta simoni Lessert, 1925 is transferred to the newly established genus Kibo gen. n., and a new combination Kibo simoni comb. n. is proposed for it. Both P. albimana Simon, 1902 and P. pannosa Simon, 1903 are proposed as a junior synonym of P. spinosa Simon, 1901, the type species. P. occidentalis Simon, 1902 is proposed as a junior synonym of P. pulchra (Thorell, 1899). Lectotypes are designated for Pochyta insulana and P. simoni. Seven new species are described: Pochyta aurantiaca sp. n. (♂♀), P. equatorialis sp. n. (♂♀), P. lucida sp. n. (♀), P. maddisoni sp. n. (♂♀), P. tendicula sp. n. (♂)—all from Gabon, P. konilokho sp. n. (♂) from Guinea, and P. minuta sp. n. (♀) from Nigeria. The yet unknown females of Pochyta fastibilis Simon, 1903, P. major Simon, 1902 and P. pulchra (Thorell, 1899) are described for the first time. New distribution data for some species are given.

AbstractThe genus Saltisedes Kubota, 1944 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae: Tmesiphorini) is redefined and three new species are described and illustrated: S. hainanensis Yin and Nomura, new species (China), S. kojimai Nomura and Yin, new species (Japan), and S. yahiroi Nomura and Yin, new species (Malaysia). Saltisedes brunneus Kubota, 1944 (Japan), the only previously known species is redescribed. Stethotaphrus Newton and Chandler is placed as a junior synonym of Saltisedes, the placement results in the following new combinations: Saltisedes clavatus (Raffray, 1882), new combination, Saltisedes hamotoides (Schaufuss, 1882), new combination, Saltisedes javanicus (Raffray, 1882), new combination, Saltisedes longispina (Raffray, 1903), new combination, and Saltisedes weiri (Chandler, 2001), new combination. A list of known Saltisedes species is included and a key to the species from continental Asia and Japan is presented.

A new species of Mimonecteola, M. antarctica sp. nov., is described from two specimens collected by the R/V Eltaninfrom the Amundsen Sea (Pacific Sector) and north-west of Elephant Island (Atlantic Sector). It is most similar to M. carls-bergi Zeidler, 2009 but is readily distinguished by the relatively shorter, and more feeble, fifth pereopoda and the relatively longer second antennae. The genus now consists of seven species and a new key to distinguish them is provided.
