A new species of the genus Paramesotriton (Caudata: Salamandridae) from Fujian, southeastern China

New amphibian species have been constantly discovered throughout southern China, including from areas close to heavily populated cities that remain poorly surveyed for amphibian diversity. We describe a new species of the newt genus Paramesotriton from Fujian, a developed province on the southeastern coast of mainland China. The mitochondrial genealogy suggests that the new species is the sister taxon to Paramesotriton hongkongensis, separated by an uncorrected pairwise distances of 5.8% at the ND2 gene fragment analyzed. In addition to the genetic divergence, the new species can be readily differentiated from its congeners by having: a very rough skin; a continuous, orange, vertebral ridge; few warts on each side of the vertebral ridge; numerous small irregular orange-red or yellow spots on the chin, venter, underside of axillae, flanks, lateral side of the tail, base of limbs and cloaca; a small groove at the base of the vomerine tooth series; relatively long tail, relatively flat cloaca in females; normally developed eyes, and the absence of vestigial gills and gill filaments in adults.

A new species, Zingiber ventricosum, endemic to Yunnan Province of southwestern China, is described and illustrated. It is similar to Z. oligophyllum, Z. thorelii and Z. xishuangbannaense in having much-reduced ligules, usually elongated petioles, flower shape and glabrous ovaries. Zingiber ventricosum, however, is readily distinguished from its three relatives by having erect peduncles and convex bracts that are inflated at their bases and acuminate and wide-spreading at their apices. These four species belong to Zingiber sect. Cryptanthium and together compose the informal “Z. oligophyllum complex”. This complex has a rather wide geographic distribution that extends from southern China to Thailand, Laos and southern Vietnam and to Taiwan, China. The three previously described species are revised based on a study of herbarium specimens, as well as living plants. Zingiber xishuangbannaense, previously regarded as conspecific with Z. thorelii, is resurrected here. Some of the previous records of Z. thorelii from Thailand are assigned to Z. xishuangbannaense, while the remaining records represent an as-yet unidentified taxon. Zingiber oligophyllum, previously reported as endemic to Taiwan, is now recorded for southeastern mainland China and Hong Kong. Descriptions, colour plates, distribution maps and preliminary IUCN conservations assessments for the four species are provided, together with a key to these species. Lectotypes for Z. oligophyllum and Z. xishuangbannaense are designated here, and the previous lectotypification of Z. thorelii is narrowed to a single specimen. Based on the latest IUCN criteria, Z. ventricosum is proposed to be Critically Endangered (CR), while the other three species qualify as least concern (LC).

A new species of the Oriental Perlidae genus Neoperlops Banks, 1939, Neoperlops triangulatus sp. nov. is described from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China. Neoperlops gressitti Banks, 1939 is redescribed, and recorded from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for the first time. Neoperlops huanghuye (Chen, 2020) comb. n., recently described from Fujian Province from southeastern China, is transferred from Phanoperla Banks, 1938. The six species of the genus are classified in two groups of morphologically similar species.

Field surveys of less-explored forests often lead to discoveries of new amphibian species. During a series of field surveys in early 2017 at Mt. Lianhua (the Lotus Mountain) of Lianhuashan-Baipenzhu Provincial Nature Reserve in southern China, we found an undocumented population of stout newt, genus Pachytriton. Based on its distinct morphological characters and large genetic divergence from congeners (uncorrected p-distance > 5% in either mitochondrial nd2 or cytb sequences), we describe this population as the tenth species of the genus: Pachytriton airobranchiatus sp. nov. It can be distinguished from other members of Pachytriton by a combination of the following morphological characters: prominently elevated distal end of the epibranchial bone showing as two conspicuous protruding bulges behind the head; dorsal coloration can be either spotted or unspotted; bright orange dots absent on dorsum; costal grooves absent between axilla and groin; fingers I and toe I slender, do not forms a volar pad; dorsal tips of fingers and toes brown; and tips of fore- and hind limbs could contact when limbs adpressed against body flank. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the new species with P. wuguanfui, P. xanthospilos, and P. changi. Currently, the new species is known from the type locality and an adjacent mountain peak at about 1000 m elevation. It inhabits small montane streams in broadleaf forests near the top of the mountain.

A new species of anglerfish, Chaunax nudiventer, is described on the basis of 35 specimens from the western South Pacific Ocean. It is characterized by large spots on the dorsal surface; a largely naked area on abdomen; a relatively short head and long tail, both reflected in the elongated body; slender and simple spines on body surface; numerous broad flaps on lateral side of body; and higher number of lateral line neuromasts: mainly 41–43 in lateral line proper, 4 in the upper peropercular series, and 16–17 in the pectoral series. Comments on a similar species, C. latipunctatus from the eastern South Pacific Ocean, is provided.

A new species of Iguanidae Liolaemini lizard from the San Guillermo National Park in western Argentina, is described. The new species is a member of the Liolaemus darwinii complex within the monophyletic boulengeri species group. It is distinguished by its small body size, relatively long tail, low number of scales around midbody, dorsal scales moderately keeled, precloacal pores only in male, bulged patch of enlarged scales on the proximal posterior surface of the thigh in both sexes, dorsal pattern lacking of light vertebral or dorsolateral stripes, antehumeral fold without black pigment in female but greyish in male, a prescapular dark dot dorsal to antehumeral fold in both sexes, and postscapular spot absent. The new species is terrestrial, living in habitats with gravel and sandy soil in an Andean Monte landscape with sparse vegetation, above 2270 meters of altitude.

SUMMARYGiven the worldwide decline of amphibian populations due to emerging infectious diseases, it is imperative that we identify and address the causative agents. Many of the pathogens recently implicated in amphibian mortality and morbidity have been fungal or members of a poorly understood group of fungus-like protists, the mesomycetozoans. One mesomycetozoan, Amphibiocystidium ranae, is known to infect several European amphibian species and was associated with a recent decline of frogs in Italy. Here we present the first report of an Amphibiocystidium sp. in a North American amphibian, the Eastern red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), and characterize it as the new species A. viridescens in the order Dermocystida based on morphological, geographical and phylogenetic evidence. We also describe the widespread and seasonal distribution of this parasite in red-spotted newt populations and provide evidence of mortality due to infection.

Summary Bursaphelenchus paraleoni n. sp. was isolated from Loblolly pine, Pinus taeda, logs from the USA. The new species is characterised by a lateral field with three lines, 13-16 μm long stylet with small basal swellings, and the excretory pore located slightly posterior to the nerve ring. The male spicules are mitten-shaped, the lamina smoothly tapering towards the distal tip. The condylus is broadly rounded, with a small dorsally bent hook, rostrum triangular or conical with finely rounded tip, and cucullus absent. One midventral precloacal papilla, one adcloacal pair and two postcloacal pairs of genital papillae are present. The bursal flap is long and spade-like with the posterior margin truncate or irregular. Females have a small vulval flap 4-6 μm long, a post-vulval uterine sac extending for 34-49% of the vulva to anus distance, a very long tail with slight ventral curvature, mostly filiform and with a finely rounded terminus, occasionally bluntly rounded. Huge variation in the tails of males and females were observed in a culture. It is similar to species of B. eidmanni, B. leoni, and B. silvestris in the leoni-group but detailed phylogenetic analysis based on 18S, ITS and D2-D3 28S sequences confirmed it as a new species.
