Description of a new species of Gymnotocinclus from the rio Tocantins basin with phylogenetic analysis of the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae (Siluriformes: Loricariidae)

Gymnotocinclus canoeiro n. sp. of the Hypoptopomatinae is described from small tributaries of the upper rio Tocantins basin. It is distinguished from G. anosteos by having five characters: (1) the presence of body dermal plates, (2) the pectoral girdle not exposed in ventral view, (3) the pelvic spine longer than pectoral spine in males, (4) the pectoral fin with seven to eight branched rays, and (5) the presence of an adipose fin. Furthermore, maximum likelihood (ML) analysis was used to estimate a molecular phylogeny from previously published data of one nuclear (F-Reticulon 4) and three mitochondrial (16S RNA, COI and CytB) genes. The phylogenetic results revealed the new species as a sister taxon of Gymnotocinclus anosteos within the Otothyrini. We also included samples of Nannoplecostomus eleonorae that appeared sister group to all other Neoplecostomini species, and Plesioptopoma curvidens that appeared within the Neoplecostomini forming a sister clade to all species of Neoplecostomus, except N. ribeirensis and the species of Pareiorhina, except P. rudolphi.

Microglanis carlae, new species, is described from the río Paraguay basin and distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: paired and anal fins mottled or with thin faint bands, trunk with dark-brown saddles, anterior margin of pectoral spine with serrations retrorse proximally and antrorse distally, tip of pectoral spine as a distinct bony point, continuous portion of lateral line reaching vertical through last dorsal-fin ray, caudal peduncle with irregularly shaped, faint to dark blotch, maxillary barbel surpassing vertical through dorsal-spine origin, and dark bar on posterior flank continuous from base of adipose fin to that of anal fin. The new species is included in the Microglanis parahybae species complex on the basis of color pattern.

Pseudobagarius eustictus, new species, is described from the Nam Heung drainage (a tributary of the Mekong River) in northern Laos. It is distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: a weakly-produced snout in which the upper jaw extends only slightly beyond the margin of the lower jaw when viewed ventrally, 3 tubercles on the posterior margin of the pectoral spine, eye diameter 8% HL, head width 24.1% SL, dark yellow dorsal and lateral surfaces of the head, pectoral spine lacking elongate extensions, pectoral fin reaching the pelvic-fin base when adpressed against the body, dorsolateral surfaces of body without longitudinal series of prominent tubercles, body depth at anus 13.7% SL, length of adipose-fin base 17.7% SL, caudal-peduncle depth 7.0% SL, and 33 vertebrae.

Phylogeny of the Oriental genus Pnyxiopalpus Vilkamaa & Hippa, 1999 was re-studied in the light of the recently described, putatively related genus Vulagisciara Evenhuis, 2007, from Fiji, and a new species of Pnyxiopalpus, P. persimplex sp. n. from Selangor, Malaysia. Characters of these taxa were added to a previously published data matrix . The parsimony analysis yields two most parsimonious cladograms. In the strict concensus cladogram, Vulagisciara appears as the sister group of a monophyletic Pnyxiopalpus. Pnyxiopalpus persimplex sp. n. is described. The new species shares the basic structure of Pnyxiopalpus, but lacks some of the unique morphological modifications present in congeneric species. P. persimplex appears as the sister species to P. simplex, these two species together appearing as the sister group to all other Pnyxiopalpus.

Nemuroglanis furcatus is described from streams of the rio Guariba, a clear water tributary of the rio Aripuanã, rio Madeira basin in Brazil. Nemuroglanis furcatus can be distinguished from its congeners by the possession of a long lateral line, reaching the middle portion of the adipose-fin base; a narrow posterior cranial fontanel (16 to 27% of its length); and the anterior border of pectoral bridge with a pointed contour. The plesiomorphic state of some of the synapomorphies for Nemuroglanis in N. furcatus suggests that this species might be the sister-group to the remaining species of the genus. A key for all four valid species of Nemuroglanis species is provided.

Akysis longifilis, new species, is described from the Sittang River drainage in Myanmar. It is a member of the A. variegatus species group and can be distinguished from congeners in the group (except for A. brachybarbatus, A. fuliginatus, A. pictus, A. prashadi, A. variegatus, A. varius and A. vespa) in having a smooth (vs. serrated) posterior edge of the pectoral spine. It is distinguished from A. brachybarbatus, A. fuliginatus, A. pictus, A. prashadi, A. variegatus, A. varius and A. vespa in having a unique combination of: length of adipose-fin base 25.7–31.1% SL, body depth at anus 9.7–13.6% SL, caudal peduncle length 18.3–23.2% SL, caudal peduncle depth 5.6–7.2% SL, head width 21.1–24.7% SL, nasal barbel length 67.4–96.4% HL, maxillary barbel length 123.2–159.6% HL, vertebrae 33–35, body with light saddle-shaped spots, and caudal fin forked.

Nanobagrus lemniscatus, a new species of miniature bagrid catfish from the Malay Peninsula is described here. It can be distinguished from congeners in having the following combination of characters: large cream patches on a brown body frequently coalescing to form broad transverse band, length of adipose-fin base 24.0–27.1% SL, body depth at anus 13.1–14.0% SL, 35–36 vertebrae, pectoral spine with length 16.1–18.7% SL and 7–9 serrations on its posterior margin, and a convex neurocranium. Nanobagrus stellatus is also recorded from the Malay Peninsula for the first time in this study.

Akysis bilustris, new species, is described from the Xe Kong drainage (a subdrainage of the Mekong River) in southern Laos. It is distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: eye diameter 14.0– 17.5% HL, serrae on posterior margin of pectoral spine 2–3 and longer than half width of spine, pectoral fin reaching to or overlapping pelvic-fin base (length 24.5–29.3% SL), adipose-fin base length 14.3–18.3% SL, body depth at anus 11.4– 13.8% SL, caudal-peduncle length 19.6–23.4% SL, caudal-peduncle depth 6.7–9.2% SL, caudal fin emarginate, and vertebrae 30–31.

A new species of Parotocinclus is described from the upper rio Piranhas-Açu basin, northeastern Brazil. The new species differs from all its congeners, except P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis (both from rio Paraíba do Sul basin, southeastern Brazil), and P. spilurus (rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil) by presenting the adipose fin rudimentary or absent. The new species differs from P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis, and P. spilurus mainly by presenting the abdomen region extensively naked, with few reduced rounded dermal platelets between the pectoral girdle and the anus. Parotocinclus seridoensis is probably an endemic species of the semi-arid Caatinga, region where the genus presents high species richness.

Akysis pulvinatus, new species, is described from southern Thailand. It can be distinguished from congeners in having a combination of: length of adipose-fin base 23.0–25.2% SL, body depth at anus 13.2–16.0% SL, caudal peduncle depth 9.4–10.3% SL, head length 27.6–29.8% SL, head width 21.9–25.1% SL, length of nasal barbel 13.9–57.5% HL, length of maxillary barbel 78.5–105.0% HL, smooth posterior edge of pectoral spine, gently forked caudal fin with lower lobe longer than upper, yellow snout, and rounded pale colored patches on body. A possible case of Müllerian mimicry with the syntopic Pseudobagarius leucorhynchus is mentioned and briefly discussed.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described for the upper Munim and Preguiças river basins, northeastern Brazil, supported by morphological and molecular species delimitation methods. This new species belongs to the Hyphessobrycon sensu stricto group, as it has the three main diagnostic character states of this assemblage: presence of a dark brown or black blotch on the dorsal fin, absence of a black midlateral stripe on its flank and the position of Weberian apparatus upward horizontal through dorsal margin of operculum. Our phylogenetic analysis also supported the allocation of the new species in this group; however, it was not possible to recover the species sister-group. Pristellamaxillaris and Moenkhausiahemigrammoides were recovered as the sister-clade of the Hyphessobrycon sensu stricto group.
