Description of a new species of Miltochrista Hübner from Vietnam, with eight new combinations (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae)

Miltochrista Hübner, [1819] is a large genus of lichen-moths (family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae, tribe Lithosiini) including more than 160 valid species and widely distributed in Oriental and Palaearctic Regions. The genus for a long time was treated in a wide sense. Holloway (2001) treated as Miltochrista only a small group of species close to the type species of the genus Miltochrista miniata (Forster, 1771), resurrected genera Barsine Walker, 1854, and Lyclene Moore, [1860], and transferred the majority of former Miltochrista and Oriental Asura Walker, 1854 to these genera. Following Holloway's concept, many species were described as Lyclene during last two decades (Černý & Pinratana 2009; Kirti & Gill 2009; Bucsek 2012; 2014; Dubatolov & Bucsek 2013; 2014; Wu et al. 2013; Černý 2016). Kirti & Singh (2016) synonymized Lyclene with Miltochrista, but, nevertheless, the status of Lyclene is still debatable, and the generic/subgeneric structure of Miltochrista sensu lato needs revision (Volynkin et al., in prep.).

Miltochrista Hübner, [1819] is one of largest genera of lichen-moths (family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae, tribe Lithosiini) including more than 160 valid species, widely distributed in Oriental and Palearctic Regions. For a long time, the genus was treated in a wide sense. Holloway (2001) treated Miltochrista as a small group of species close to the type species of the genus Noctua rubicunda [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 (a junior synonym of Miltochrista miniata (J.R. Forster, 1771)), whereas the majority of other Palaearctic and Oriental Miltochrista-like species was assigned to the genera Lyclene Moore in Horsfield & Moore, [1860] and Barsine Walker, 1854. Kirti & Singh (2016) synonymized Lyclene with Miltochrista and at present the genus is treated in wide sense. Nevertheless, Miltochrista in its modern treatment is a heterogeneous group, the status of Lyclene and some other species-groups with significantly different male and female genital structures is unclear, and the generic/subgeneric structure of Miltochrista sensu lato is under revision by Volynkin & Dubatolov (in prep.).

Miltochrista Hübner is one of the largest genera of lichen-moths (family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae, tribe Lithosiini) including more than 160 valid species and widely distributed in Oriental and Palaearctic Regions. The genera Miltochrista and the related Asura Walker for a long time were treated in a wide sense. Hampson (1900) considered the generic names Barsine Walker, Ammatho Walker, Sesapa Walker, Cabarda Walker, Mahavira Moore, Korawa Moore and Gurna Swinhoe as synonyms of Miltochrista, and genera such as Lyclene Moore, Nepita Moore, Cyme Felder and Adites Moore under Asura. Holloway (2001) revived the genera Barsine (=Ammatho, Mahavira and Korawa), Cabarda, Lyclene, Nepita, Cyme and Adiles and transferred most of species of Miltochrista to Barsine and Cabarda, and most of species of Asura to Lyclene, Adiles, Cyme and Nepita. Later, the genera Gurna and Sesapa were also revalidated by Volynkin (2016; 2017a). According to Holloway (2001) the main differences between Miltochrista and Lyclene are wing venation and number of cornuti. However, these features may vary within the genus, while the ground plan of clasping apparatuses of the two taxa is the same. For this reason, Kirti & Singh (2016) synonymized Lyclene with Miltochrista. Volynkin et al. (2018) confirmed this synonymy and considered Miltochrista sensu Holloway (2001) as the M. miniata (Forster) species-group only.

Both sexes of a new species, Stylicletodes wellsi sp. nov. (Harpacticoida: Cletodidae), are described from material collected from sediments in the East China Sea. The new species belongs to a species group whose members are characterized by an anal operculum that has a backwardly directed, median linguiform process and fifth legs that display naked or sparsely pinnate armature elements in both sexes. Within this group, S. wellsi sp. nov. is morphologically closest to S. reductus Wells, 1965 but differs primarily from its European congener in the armature pattern of P4 (both rami) and the female P5. Distribution records of all species are summarized and an updated identification key to the seven valid species in the genus is presented. Taxonomic issues related to the type species S. longicaudatus (Brady, 1880) are briefly discussed.

Four known species of Loxosoma, namely, L. phascolosomatum Vogt, L. crassicauda Salensky, L. singulare Keferstein, and L. claviforme Hincks, and a new species L. obesum are found in the Plymouth region, and are described. L. phascolosomatum is found on Phascolosoma vulgare, and in addition on two molluscs, Lepton clarkiae and Mysella bidentata from the burrows of Phascolosoma (pellucidum) elongatum from the Salcombe Estuary. L. crassicauda lives in the tanks in the Laboratory. Its average length is 1.4 mm. Between March 1929 and February 1930 males only were found: no ova were seen. L. singulare.--Occurs on Aphrodite aculeata; it varies between 0.18 and 0.8 mm. in length. In females carrying embryos the vestibule has two diverticula, one on either side of the rectum. L. claviforme.--It is considered a valid species, and may be distinguished from L. singulare by: (1) its greater size and length of stalk, (2) greater number of tentacles (commonly twelve), (3) position of the budding zone, and (4) the presence of paired sense-organs. Its average length is about 0.8 mm. It occurs on Hermione hystrix. A small group of Loxosoma, found on Aphrodite aculeata, were intermediate in form between L. singulare and L. claviforme, and were peculiar in retaining a number of their buds. The sex of such buds in several instances differed from that of the parent. L. obesum sp. nov. is found on the dorsal surface of Aphrodite aculeata. It may reach a length of 2.4 mm.; average individuals are rather more than 1.0 mm. in length. The lophophore is small, and bears almost invariably eight tentacles. Longitudinal muscles only are present in the stalk, which ends in a small disc of attachment. A foot-gland is present in the bud, and is frequently preserved as a vestige in the adult. The buds are near the lophophore, and may be as many as six on either side. The larva resembles that of L. singulare. Two main forms may be distinguished, differing in shape of the calyx and development of the stomach. The ovary may contain six well-developed ova on either side, and the vestibule twenty-six embryos. With one exception, females greatly exceeded males in number, and it is probable that the male becomes sexually mature at a smaller size than does the female.

A cladistic analysis of the genus Melanophora Meigen, 1803 (type-species: Musca grossificationis Linnaeus, 1758 [= Musca roralis Linnaeus, 1758]) is presented and the generic delimitation is critically redefined. The nominal genus-group taxon Bequaertiana Curran, 1929 (type-species: Bequaertiana argyriventris Curran, 1929) is synonymised with Melanophora Meigen syn. nov. The following new combinations are proposed: Melanophora argyriventris (Curran, 1929) comb. nov. and Melanophora basilewskyi (Peris, 1957) comb. nov. Melanophora chia sp. nov. from SW Sardinia is described, illustrated and compared with the other known species of the genus. The male of Melanophora asetosa Kugler, 1978 is described for the first time. Melanophora basilewskyi (Peris, 1957) is recorded from Kenya for the first time.

A taxonomic revision of the tribe Ceroptresini (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) is conducted for the first time. Prior to this study, the total number of valid species of Ceroptres, the only genus within Ceroptresini to date, was 23. As a result of this revision, 15 Ceroptres species are retained as valid and one species, Amblynotus ensiger Walsh, 1864, is desynonymized from Ceroptres petiolicola (Osten-Sacken, 1861), being considered here as a valid Ceroptres species: C. ensiger (Walsh, 1864) status verified and comb. nov. An additional five new species are described from Mexico: Ceroptres junquerasi Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. lenis Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. mexicanus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. nigricrus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. quadratifacies Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov., increasing the total number of valid Ceroptres species to 21. Ceroptres masudai Abe, 1997 is synonymized with C. kovalevi Belizin, 1973. Ceroptres niger Fullaway, 1911 is transferred to Andricus (Andricus confusus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar comb. nov. and nom. nov.). Five species (Amblynotus inermis Walsh, 1864; Cynips quercusarbos Fitch, 1859; Cynips querficus Fitch, 1859; Cynips quercuspisum Fitch, 1859; and Cynips quercustuber Fitch, 1859) are not considered as valid Ceroptres. The status of Ceroptres quereicola (Shinji, 1938), previously classified as an unplaced species, is commented on. In addition, a Nearctic species from the USA, Ceroptres politus Ashmead, 1896, is here proposed as the type species of a new genus within Ceroptresini: Buffingtonella Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar gen. nov. Redescriptions, biological and distribution data, illustrations and keys to genera and species within Ceroptresini are provided. The diagnostic morphological traits of Ceroptresini, Ceroptres and the new genus are discussed.

A new species of the genus Osteobrama is described from the Mahanadi River, Tikarpada, Angul District, Odisha state, India. Osteobrama tikarpadaensis, new species, differs from its congeners in having two pairs of minute barbels; iii–iv unbranched dorsal-fin rays with 25–33 serrae on the last unbranched ray; 15–16 branched pectoral-fin rays, and 25–27 branched anal-fin rays. The status of Osteobrama dayi is discussed and shown to be a valid species. A key to the species of the genus is provided.

A taxonomic account and an annotated checklist of the Finnish Mymaridae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) are given, comprising 85 named species in 19 genera. Among them 2 genera, Dicopus Enock, 1909 and Stethynium Enock, 1909, 1 subgenus, Anagrus (Paranagrus Perkins, 1905), and the following 25 species represent new records for Finland: Anagrus (Anagrus) avalae Soyka, 1956, A. (Anagrus) bakkendorfi Soyka, 1946, A. (Anagrus) ensifer Debauche, 1948, A. (Anagrus) nigriceps (Smits van Burgst, 1914), A. (Anagrus) obscurus Förster, 1861, A. (Anagrus) parvus Soyka, 1956, A. (Caraphractus), stat. revid., and its type species Caraphractus cinctus Walker, 1846 is transferred to Eustochus as Eustochus (Caraphractus) cinctus (Walker, 1846), comb. nov. Eustochus (Eustochus) koponeni Triapitsyn, sp. nov. is described from Finland and Germany. Lymaenon gracilentus (Hellén, 1974), stat. restit. is resurrected as a valid species from the previous synonymy with Lymaenon aureus and redescribed. The previously unknown male of Alaptus schmitzi Soyka, 1939 is described. Polynema depressicollis Hellén, 1974, syn. nov., is synonymized with Polynema (Doriclytus) vitripenne. Anagrus (Paranagrus) optabilis is newly recorded from the Canary Islands and Madeira, and Cleruchus megatrichus is for the first time reported from France.

This revision of the bee genus Bathanthidium Mavromoustakis, 1953, treats 12 species, with 11 recorded from China, including Bathanthidium fengkaiense Niu & Zhu, sp. nov.. Two species are proposed as new combinations in genus Bathanthidium: Anthidium (s. str.) bicolor Wu, 2004, A. (s. str.) monganshanensis Wu, 2004. The two new combinations (B. bicolor, B. monganshanense) are in Bathanthidium (Manthidium), previously considered to include only the type species from Burma and Laos (published records from northeastern India and Malaysia are based on misinterpreted localities). Trachusa (Paraanthidium) concavum (Wu, 1962) and Stelis siamensis Friese, 1925 are synonymized with B. binghami (Friese, 1901). Bathanthidium circinatum Wu, 2004 is transferred to Pseudoanthidium Friese forming the new combination P. (s. str.) circinatum (Wu, 2004). The distribution of each species is given, new distribution sites are marked by asterisk (*) especially. Our results confirm that the genus Bathanthidium has higher species diversity than previously documented and that this diversity is centered in China.

We redescribe Cypricercus cuneatus Sars, 1895 and Strandesia mercatorum (Vavra, 1895), type species of their genera, in order to reassess the taxonomic position of species in Cypricercus s.l. and Strandesia s.l., as well as to clarify the distinction between Cypricercus s.s. and Strandesia s.s. The morphology, taxonomy and zoogeography of these two genera are discussed. Strandesia amati (Martens, 1984) is synonymised with Strandesia lineata Victor & Fernando, 1981. Strandesia trispinosa galantis Broodbakker, 1983 becomes a synonym of the nominotypical form. Cypricercus inermis (Brady, 1904) is herewith redescribed and reinstated as a valid species, not synonymous to the type species of the genus as was previously thought. One Cypricercus (C. salinus De Deckker, 1981) and eleven Strandesia (S. crassa Klie, 1939, S. dani George & Martens, 1993, S. decorata (Sars, 1903), S. lineata Victor & Fernando, 1981, S. parva Hartmann, 1964, S. tolimensis Roessler, 1990, S. trichurensis Victor et al., 1980, S. trispinosa (Pinto & Purper, 1965), S. tuberculata Hartmann, 1964, S. umbonata Victor & Fernando, 1981, S. weberi (Moniez, 1892)) are allocated to Bradleystrandesia. Cypricercus mongolicus Daday, 1909 is transferred to Eucypris. Cypricercus xhosa sp. nov. is here described from South Africa. We also propose a conservative list of species belonging to Cypricercus s.s. and Strandesia s.s.
