Redescriptions of two poorly known deep-sea shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea: Pasiphaeidae and Glyphocrangonidae) from the Andaman Sea, eastern Indian Ocean

Two deep-sea caridean shrimps are reported on the basis of topotypic materials recently collected from the Andaman Sea off Myanmar, eastern Indian Ocean: Pasiphaea unispinosa Wood-Mason, 1892 (Pasiphaeidae) and Glyphocrangon smithii Wood-Mason & Alcock, 1891b (Glyphocrangonidae). These two taxa are poorly known in literature, and thus their diagnostic features remain to be reassessed. The present material enabled us to describe morphological characters of the two species in detail, even though only a single specimen is available for each species. Pasiphaea unispinosa closely resembles P. merriami Schmitt, 1931 from the western Atlantic, but the distinctly carinate middorsal carapace, the deep branchiostegal sinus and the different structure of the pleonal tergites distinguish P. unispinosa from P. merriami. Glyphocrangon smithii is most similar to G. amblytes Komai, 2004 from the western Indian Ocean and G. wagini from Sala y Gomez Ridge in the eastern Pacific, but it is distinctive in having an unusually deep longitudinal groove on the extensor surface of each pereopod 4 and 5 dactylus.

The identity of the rare xanthid crab, Pilumnoplax acanthomerus Rathbun, 1911, originally described from the AmiranteIslands in the western Indian Ocean, is elucidated. Števčić (2005) transferred the species from Pilumnoplax Stimpson,1858, to a new genus, Linnaeoxantho. This monotypic genus is re-diagnosed and new morphological characters are high-lighted. New records from Ryukyu and Line Islands, in the western and central Pacific, respectively, are reported. Linnae-oxantho is compared with the morphologically similar Melybia Stimpson, 1871, from the western Atlantic, and theiraffinities are discussed. Linnaeoxanthinae Števčić, 2005, is here recognised as a valid xanthid subfamily for Linnaeoxantho and Melybia, and is considered to have priority over Melybiidae Števčić, 2005.

Abstract Albuneid crabs are specialized and active sand-burrowing organisms. Despite their substantial diversity, their ability to avoid fishing gear leads to “under collection” and a discontinuous record of distribution. The present study documents the first distributional record of Albunea occulta Boyko, 2002 from the Bay of Bengal, eastern Indian Ocean. Albunea thurstoni Henderson, 1893 is also recorded for the first time from the area, i.e., from the Gulf of Mannar, southwestern Bay of Bengal. This study further reports variation in morphological characters, especially in the carapace grooves (CG) from previous records and across specimens from different regions. Morphometric characters were found useful in species discrimination, which is explained as well.

Feeding habit of tuna in Indian Ocean has been described around Sri Lanka, Indian Waters, Andaman Sea, western Indian Ocean (<em>Seychelles Islands</em>), western equatorial Indian Ocean whereas the tunas feeding habit study in Eastern Indian Oceanis merely in existence. The purpose of this study is to investigate the stomach content of three tuna species (bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, and skipjack tuna), apex predator in the southern part of Eastern Indian Ocean. The study was conducted in March – April, 2010 on the basis of catches of commercial tuna longline vessel based in Port of Benoa. A total of 53 individual fishes were collected, consisting of bigeye tuna (<em>Thunnus obesus</em>), yellowfin tuna (<em>Thunnus albacores</em>), and skipjack tuna (<em>Katsuwonus</em> <em>pelamis</em>). Stomach specimens were collected and analyzed.Analysis was conducted on the basis of index of preponderance method. The diet of the three tuna species showed fishes as the main diet (56–82%), followed by cephalopods (squids) as the complementary diet (0–8%), and crustaceans (shrimps) as the additional diet (2–4%). Fish prey composed of 6 families i.e. Alepisauridae, Bramidae, Carangidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, and Scombridae.

Modern goniasterids are the most numerous of living asteroids in terms of described genera and species and they have important ecological roles from shallow to deep-water marine habitats. Recent MNHN expeditions and historical collections in the USNM have resulted in the discovery of 18 new species, three new genera and multiple new occurrence records from the western Indian Ocean region including Madagascar, Glorioso and Mayotte islands, Walters Shoal, South Africa, and Somalia. This report provides the first significant contribution to knowledge of deep-sea Asteroidea from the Indian Ocean since the late 20th Century. Several deep-sea species, previously known from the North Pacific are now reported from the western Indian Ocean. Gut contents from Stellaster and Ogmaster indicate deposit feeding. Feeding modes of this and other deep-sea species are discussed. Comments are made on fossil members of included taxa. A checklist of Indian Ocean Goniasteridae is also included.

AbstractThe Coral Triangle Initiative is an ambitious attempt to conserve the marine biodiversity hotspot known as the Coral Triangle. However, the reef fauna in many nearby regions remains poorly explored and, consequently, the focus on the Coral Triangle risks overlooking other areas of high conservation significance. One region of potential significance, Aceh, Indonesia, has not been visited by coral taxonomists since the Dutch colonial period. Here we document the species richness of scleractinian corals of Pulau Weh, Aceh. We also compare the species richness of the genus Acropora at 3–5 sites in each of nine regions in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Although dominated by widespread Indo-Pacific species, the coral fauna of Pulau Weh is also the eastern and western boundary for many Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean species, respectively. We identified a total of 133 scleractinian species, of which three have been previously recorded only in the western Indian Ocean and five are presently undescribed. The mean species richness of the Acropora at Pulau Weh is similar to regions within the Coral Triangle. This high species richness plus the high proportion of endemics suggests that the Andaman Sea is of similarly high conservation value to the Coral Triangle. We suggest that an international initiative similar to the Coral Triangle Initiative is required to conserve this region, which includes the territorial waters of six countries.

Abstract. Data is presented here on Reticulofenestra coccolith size distribution patterns from 122 Mid-Miocene to Pliocene samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project sites in the Western Indian Ocean and Red Sea. A clear pattern is revealed with a dramatic size reduction event occurring in the Late Miocene (nannofossil zone NN10). As a result of this event nannofloras from the interval above it are readily distinguishable by the absence of specimens longer than 5 microns; this interval is termed the “small Reticulofenestra interval”. Assemblages from above and below this interval contain large specimens but they can be reliably distinguished by different size distribution patterns within them. Analogous data from other studies is reviewed, possible causes of the pattern are discussed, and its biostratigraphic application described. The Neogene taxonomy of the genus Reticulofenestra is revised and four new combinations are proposed.

Two adults of the rare buffalo blunthorn spiny lobster, Palinustus mossambicus Barnard, 1926 and a puerulus specimen were found while curating material from the first R/V “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” expedition to the Western Indian Ocean. Furthermore, another puerulus-stage specimen of this spiny lobster species was found caught near Zanzibar, Tanzania. The morphological characters of the puerulus specimens indicated that they belonged to P. mossambicus, although the puerulus stage is somewhat dorsoventrally flattened, and has proportionally large pleopods. This constitutes the first puerulus description for the spiny lobsters of the genus Palinustus.
