Four new species and one new subspecies of Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) from the Tambopata river, Madre de Dios, Peru

Four new species and one new subspecies of Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) are described. Aphyle niedmandi sp. nov., Evius ocassus sp. nov., Paranerita maculata sandeepani ssp. nov., Paranerita kotolnuki sp. nov. and Baritius flexuosus sp. nov. were collected in the Tambopata River region, Madre de Dios (Peru), as part of a Citizen Science Project, in mutual collaboration between the Natural History Museum (Lima–Peru) and Rainforest Expeditions. External morphological descriptions, morphology of male genitalia, and geographic distributions in Peru are given for all taxa as well as their barcoding.

Abstract During 2017, the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (WI) and the Utrecht University Museum launched a Citizen Science project. Dutch school children collected soil samples from gardens at different localities in the Netherlands, and submitted them to the WI where they were analysed in order to find new fungal species. Around 3000 fungal isolates, including filamentous fungi and yeasts, were cultured, preserved and submitted for DNA sequencing. Through analysis of the ITS and LSU sequences from the obtained isolates, several plectosphaerellaceous fungi were identified for further study. Based on morphological characters and the combined analysis of the ITS and TEF1-α sequences, some isolates were found to represent new species in the genera Phialoparvum, i.e. Ph. maaspleinense and Ph. rietveltiae, and Plectosphaerella, i.e. Pl. hanneae and Pl. verschoorii, which are described and illustrated here.

Abstract The Colobathristidae are a poorly studied family of Lygaeoidea distributed in the tropics and subtropics of Australasian, Neotropical, and Oriental biogeographic regions. Phaenacantha Horváth, 1904 is the largest genus of the family, with 33 described species. Here, two new species of Phaenacantha are described from Borneo (P. grimmae sp. nov. and P. nigrispina sp. nov.) and one from New Caledonia (P. paveli sp. nov.), all of which represent the first record of the genus from these islands. Also, a specimen of genus Symphylax Horváth, 1904 from Borneo is described that has strong similarities to S. handschini Kormilev, 1953 from the same island, but differs from it in some minor features and is considered a new subspecies, S. handschini kinabaluensis subsp. nov.

The Hepialidae species of Trinidad and Tobago are documented and two species are recognized. The new and monotypic genus Wallacella, gen. n., (Lepidoptera, Hepialidae) is erected to include Phassus guianensis Schaus of Guyana (Wallacella guianensis, comb. n.). The male holotype and genitalia are also illustrated for the first time. Potential generic affinities with Druceiella (Viette) and Pfitzneriana (Viette) are considered. Gymelloxes juliusboosi sp. n. is described from Trinidad and Tobago and compared to its congeneric species. The sternite VIII and male genitalia are diagnostic for this new species. The male holotype is deposited in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, UK.

The results of examination of extensive collections of Epilachna Chevrolat (Coccinellidae: Epilachnini) from China, housed at the Natural History Museum Basel and the Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou are presented. New distribution data of 33 species and detailed digital illustrations of external morphology and male genitalia of 20 poorly known species are included. Six new species: Epilachna bocaki, E. crepida, E. echinata, E. hamulifera, E. max, E. sichuana Pang et Ślipiński spp. nov. are described. An updated list of 106 species of Epilachna recorded from China is also presented.

The Swiss arachnologist Ehrenfried Schenkel published three large works concerning Chinese spiders and other arachnids (Schenkel 1936, 1953, 1963) in which he described over two hundred species belonging to different families. Material from the first work (Schenkel 1936) is preserved in the Natural History Museum in Stockholm and was partly redescribed by several authors. The same is true for the spiders described in 1963. Most of the material from this publication is in Paris and has been partly revised. The first and last papers were published in the Stockholm and Paris museum proceedings. The second paper (Schenkel 1953) appeared in the Boletim do Museu Nacional (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), while the material was cited as being from the “Museum Hoangho-Peiho” in Tientsin [= Huanghe (Yellow River) and Baihe (Haihe River) and Tianjin in modern English respectively]. This work dealt with 59 species of spiders, harvestmen and pseudoscorpions. Forty of them were described as new species and six as a new subspecies. One of the harvestmen species was described in a new genus. Forty new taxa belong to spiders, one to pseudoscorpions and five to harvestmen. All specimens were collected in central and northern China. Several new species were described from the center of Beijing. None of the types from this publication have since been studied. While trying to find some of the types two decades ago, the first author heard from some colleagues that the material was destroyed during shipment back to China.

Some 2,000 Ptiliidae collected in the North and South Islands of New Zealand in 1983/1984 by Peter Hammond of the Natural History Museum, London, are determined to 34 species, four of which are new to the country. As there are very few previous records, most from the Auckland district of North Island, the Hammond collection provides much new distributional data. The three new species: Nellosana insperatus sp. n., Notoptenidium flavum sp. n., and Notoptenidium johnsoni sp. n., are described and figured; the genus Ptiliodes is moved from Acrotrichinae to Ptiliinae, and Ptenidium formicetorum Kraatz recorded as a new introduction. Information is provided to aid separation of the new species from those previously recorded.

The bethylid genus Foenobethylus Kieffer, 1913, unstudied for almost a century, is redescribed and assigned to the subfamily Pristocerinae based on a preliminary phylogenetic assessment. Four new species: F. bidentatus n. sp. (Brunei), F. elongatus n. sp. (Malaysia), F. emiliacasellae n. sp. (Thailand), and F. thomascokeri n. sp. (Malaysia) are described, based on males only, as females remain unrecognised in this genus. All specimens are deposited in the Department of Entomology, the Natural History Museum, London, U.K. The type species F. gracilis Kieffer (Philippines), although unrepresented by any traceable specimen, can be distinguished from these species based on the original description. A key to the five known species of Foenobethylus is provided.

In this paper, we focus on different roles in citizen science projects, and their respective relationships. We propose a tripartite model that recognises not only citizens and scientists, but also an important third role, which we call the ‘enabler’. In doing so, we acknowledge that additional expertise and skillsets are often present in citizen science projects, but are frequently overlooked in associated literature. We interrogate this model by applying it to three case studies and explore how the success and sustainability of a citizen science project requires all roles to be acknowledged and interacting appropriately. In this era of ‘wicked problems’, the nature of science and science communication has become more complex. In order to address critical emerging issues, a greater number of stakeholders are engaging in multi-party partnerships and research is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. Within this context, explicitly acknowledging the role and motivations of everyone involved can provide a framework for enhanced project transparency, delivery, evaluation and impact. By adapting our understanding of citizen science to better recognise the complexity of the organisational systems within which they operate, we propose an opportunity to strengthen the collaborative delivery of both valuable scientific research and public engagement.
