Two new species of Rhabdocoela, namely Alcha sinensis n. sp. (Polycystididae) and Trigonostomum sinensis n. sp. (Trigonostomidae), were discovered from the intertidal zone of eastern Shenzhen City, China. For A. sinensis n. sp., the stylet consists of two symmetrical triangular plates and one lamellar plate. All three plates are jagged at their posterior ends. The anterior end of the stylet connects to a thick muscular layer, which causes its movement. For T. sinensis n. sp., the copulatory organ consists of a long-tubular stylet and two "T"-shaped plates (plate I and plate II). The stylet bends 120° at 25% of its length from the base and extends straight distally. Two "T" plates are connected to each other and surround the stylet. Plate I is hook-shaped at its distal end, and plate II has a similar length but only half the width of plate I. The phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) results also support the establishment of these two new species. On the basis of the molecular phylogeny and morphology of the copulatory organ and bursa appendage, we propose a new categorization of the species of Trigonostomum.

Two new species of the genus Pogaina Marcus, 1954 (Provorticidae), namely Pogaina sinensis n. sp. and Pogaina shenzhenensis n. sp. are described from brackish water in the intertidal zone of Shenzhen Bay. For P. sinensis n. sp., the tubular stylet is slightly curved at the distal end and a fusiform structure with a flange is present at 66% of the stylet. The flange encircles the stylet, with its ends attached to the midpoint and the distal end of the stylet. For P. shenzhenensis n. sp., the stylet has a N-shaped overall morphology. A band provided with dense needle-like structures is present at the distal end of the stylet. Both the morphological (stylet) and phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) analyses support the establishment of these two new species.

Two new species of Kalyptorhynchia (Rhabdocoela), namely Itaipusa sinensis n. sp. (Koinocystididae) and Prognathorhynchus sinensis n. sp. (Gnathorhynchidae) were described from brackish water near Shenzhen Bay, representing the first records of Koinocystididae and Gnathorhynchidae in China. For I. sinensis n. sp., the U-shaped cirrus contains 50 triangular lamellar spines, with two cuticular (pseudocuticular) hooks situated at both sides of its anterior part. The hook I (right side) is funnel-shaped, while the hook II (left side) is triangular lamellar in shape. For P. sinensis n. sp., the proboscis hook has two hooks situated in an anterior to posterior sequence. The semicircular tubular stylet has a hollow spherical dead end posteriorly to the distal opening. Both the morphological and phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) analyses support the establishment of these two new species.

Two new species of Macrostomum (Platyhelminthes: Macrostomorpha), M. shiyanensis n. sp. and M. lankouensis n. sp. are described from Shiyan Reservoir and Lankou Town. Morphological characteristics of the penis stylets and sperm, as well as the phylogenetic analysis using concatenated sequences of 18S and 28S rDNA genes support the establishment of these two new species and indicate that they are closely related to M. sinensis and M. heyuanensis described from different regions of Guangdong province. Finally, the progress of molecular phylogenetics of Macrostomum worldwide is also discussed.

Abstract Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) andersoni n. sp. (Nematoda: Raphidascarididae) collected in the intestine of the humphead cichlid Gymnogeophagus balzanii (Perugia) from the Pantanal wetlands, State of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil) is described and genetically characterized. The new species differs from its congeners mainly by having a conspicuous papilla-like formation slightly anterior to the cloacal aperture. Furthermore, males of R. (S.) lanfrediae and R. (S.) mahnerti have caudal alae, and R. (S.) hypostomi and R. (S.) pimelodi lack lateral alae, whereas in the new species caudal alae are absent and lateral alae present. The remaining congeners, namely, R. (S.) marano and R. (S.) saltaensis differ from Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) andersoni n. sp. mainly because males have three pairs of postcloacal papillae (vs five pairs). In the phylogenetic reconstructions, using three nuclear genetic markers (18S, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and 28S rDNA) and one mitochondrial (cox1 mtDNA), the new species was separated from other representatives of Raphidascarididae, and the absence of monophyly in Hysterothylacium and Raphidascaroides was confirmed. Moreover, the subgenera Sprentascaris and Ichthyascaris appeared to be monophyletic. Therefore, even though Raphidascaris (Raphidascaris) was apparently not monophyletic, the subgenera of Raphidascaris should be re-erected as valid genera. The updated diagnoses of Ichthyascaris, Raphidascaris and Sprentascaris are given. The present study represents the first parasitological survey in G. balzanii.

The Asian snail-eating snakes Pareas is the largest genus of the family Pareidae (formerly Pareatidae), and widely distributed in Southeast Asia. However, potential diversity remains poorly explored due to their highly conserved morphology and incomplete samples. Here, on basis of more extensive sampling, interspecific phylogenetic relationships of the genus Pareas were reconstructed using two mitochondrial fragments (cyt b and ND4) and two nuclear genes (c-mos and Rag1), and multivariate morphometrics conducted for external morphological data. Both Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses consistently showed that the genus Pareas was comprised of two distinct, monophyletic lineages with moderate to low support values. Based on evidences from molecular phylogeny and morphological data, cryptic diversity of this genus was uncovered and two new species were described. In additional, the validity of P. macularius is confirmed.

An integrative taxonomy approach was implemented based on analysis of genetic, phylogenetic, morphological and ecological data to identify the cryptic diversity within the Phyllodactylus lanei complex. At least six species can be identified, of which four are currently considered subspecies: Phyllodactylus lanei, Phyllodactylus rupinus, Phyllodactylus isabelae, Phyllodactylus lupitae and two corresponding to undescribed taxa, which are identified and described in this contribution. These differ from other Mexican geckos in several characters: genetic distance (DNAmt), position in molecular phylogeny (concatened data DNAmt+DNAnu), species tree, morphological characters such as snout-vent length, longitudinal scales, tubercles from head to tail, interorbital scales, scales across venter, third labial–snout scales and rows of tubercles across dorsum; there are also differences in their bioclimatic profiles (temperature and precipitation) and geographical distribution. The most recent studies on taxonomy and evolution of Mexican geckos (Phyllodactylus) show that the diversity of this group of reptiles is currently underestimated, suggesting that more research and conservation efforts are should be addressed at these lizards.

Five strains of the genus Coelastrella were studied from the collections of live cultures of algae of the Institute of Biology, Syktyvkar, Russia (SYKOA Ch-045-09, SYKOA Ch-047-11, SYKOA Ch-072-17) and the Siberian Institute of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Irkutsk, Russia (IRK-A 2, IRK-A 173). It was found that, despite their high morphological similarity, the strains have different phylogenetic relationships. The analysis of the 18S rDNA and ITS1-ITS2 showed that the studied strains belong to the species: C. terrestris (IRK-A 173), C. oocystiformis (SYKOA Ch-045-09; IRK-A 2) and C. aeroterrestrica (SYKOA Ch-047-11). The SYKOA Ch-072-17 strain is probably a new species for the genus. The results confirm the high phenotypic variability and hidden diversity among the representatives of this group of green algae.

Abstract The male genitalic characters of Hexapoda are well known for their great taxonomic and systematic value. Despite insect male genitalia displaying large diversity, variation, and modification across orders, some structures are consistently present, and such characters can serve as the basis for discussion regarding homology. In the order Lepidoptera, a male genitalic structure widely known as the ‘juxta’ is present in many taxa and absence or modification of this character can be phylogenetically informative at the generic or higher level. We here focus on the systematics of the so-called ‘Taygetis clade’ within the nymphalid subtribe Euptychiina, and report an unusual case of ‘juxta loss’ in a single species, Taygetina accacioi Nakahara & Freitas, n. sp., a new species from Brazil named and described herein. Additionally, we describe another west Amazonian Taygetina Forster, 1964 species, namely Taygetina brocki Lamas & Nakahara, n. sp., in order to better document the species diversity of Taygetina. Our most up-to-date comprehensive molecular phylogeny regarding ‘Taygetis clade’ recovered these two species as members of a monophyletic Taygetina, reinforcing the absence of juxta being a character state change occurring in a single lineage, resulting in an apomorphic condition, which we report here as a rare case in butterflies (Papilionoidea).
