AbstractThe major salivary glands are considered to rarely be the sites of primary terminal duct adenocarcinomas, a neoplasm with a considerable predilection for origin from intraoral minor salivary glands. We present a clinicopathological study of 22 terminal duct adenocarcinomas of the parotid gland, the largest single series to date. A comparison between the parotid neoplasms and over 200 minor salivary gland terminal duct adenocarcinomas indicates there is little difference in biological behaviour and confirms the low-grade quality of the carcinomas, regardless of site of origin.

In order to improve the quality of experimental teaching of civil engineering, this paper analyses the unfavorable influence of backward experimental means on that, then puts forward the corresponding solution of applying electro-hydraulic servo technology to experimental teaching. Combined with the characteristic of electro-hydraulic servo technology, the necessity and feasibility of it is demonstrated. In the end, practical application of the technology of Huaqiao University validates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Summary Introduction: Xerostomia following radioiodine therapy (RIT) in patients suffering from differentiated thyroid cancer is a common side effect in 2 % to 67 % of patients treated with radioiodine (I-131). In order to evaluate the impact of sialendoscopy on health related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients suffering from therapy induced sialadenitis and xerostomia, we analyzed findings from two dedicated questionnaires (Xerostomy Questionnaire XQ and Xerostomy Inventory XI) in patients before and three months after sialendoscopy. Procedures: In total, 12 patients suffering from differentiated thyroid carcinoma (10 women and 2 men) were evaluated. All patients had experienced conservative management. Patients were offered a sialendoscopy procedure if no major contradictions were present. Patients who denied the procedure formed the control group. Pre- and (three months) postoperative HRQOL was measured with the Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROM) Xerostomia Questionnaire (XQ) and the Xerostomia Inventory (XI), as well as by a pre- and post-interventional salivary gland scintigram. Patients were graded according to their sialendoscopical findings. Results: Interventional group presented with significant improvements in HRQOL measurements regarding XQ and XI-scores three months postoperatively. Control group showed no significant changes in the XQ or the XI scores. Number of RIT and cumulative activity of I-131 did not correlate with higher disease grade in regards to sialendoscopical findings nor did it correlate with higher XQand XI scores. Pre- and post-interventional salivary gland scintigram stated that parotid glands are more severely damaged than submandibular glands (SMG), but no significant scintigraphically changes could be detected after sialendoscopy. Conclusion: Sialendoscopy in patients suffering from therapy induced sialadenitis and xerostomia seems to be beneficial when evaluating the impact on HRQOL. Functional parameters measured by salivary gland scintigram did not show significant changes in post-interventional scintigrams.

Human Machine Interface (HMI) and interactive systems applications are complex and diversified but human machine interaction in networks is even more complex. To design an interactive system, the designers must consider factors including design, technologies, people, activities and contexts. As the intermediary for human and machines, the interactive system takes charge of not only data transmission, display, storage and convertion, but also reactions to human behaviors. Based on human interaction, this paper focuses on the popular video streaming. As one of the most commonly used compression video formats, H.264 provides better quality at lower bit-rates than its previous standards in transmitting video/audio data. However, the quality of networked multimedia streaming easily fluctuates with the bit-rate variation. In order to maintain good video quality, this paper proposes to use the Kalman filter to implement the Auto bit-rate technique, which can regulate the bit-rate of the video/audio data automatically when the bit-rate is insufficient, and simultaneously guarantee the video quality. The experimental result proves that our proposed Auto bit-rate scheme can regulate the bit-rate to achieve the optimal visual quality and offer the best quality of service at the same time.

End-user development means the active participation of end users in the software development process. In this perspective, tasks that are traditionally performed by professional software developers are transferred to end users, who need to be specifically supported in performing these tasks. We have developed a methodology that supports user work practice and metadesign, allowing experts in a domain to personalize and evolve their own software environments. In this article we illustrate how this methodology is applied to a project for the development of an interactive system in the medical domain. Physicians and their activities have been carefully analyzed through a field study that is reported in the article, in order to provide them with computer systems that may improve their work practice and determine an increase in their productivity and performance, that is, a better quality of diagnosis and medical cure, with the achievement of competitive advantage for the organization they work in.
