Abstract A data processing method to obtain high-quality data from an expendable conductivity–temperature–depth (XCTD) profiler is proposed. By adjusting the mismatch of the response time of the temperature and conductivity sensors, systematic error (on the order of −0.05) in XCTD salinity data can be eliminated from regions having a strong vertical temperature gradient (>0.2°C m−1), such as the main thermocline of the nearshore side of the Kuroshio axis and the seasonal thermocline of the subarctic North Pacific. The systematic errors in XCTD depth and temperature data from two cruises were evaluated by comparing the CTD and XCTD data taken simultaneously during each cruise. The XCTD depths were in good agreement with the CTD depths from one cruise, but depth-dependent depth errors from the other cruise were found. The cause of the depth error is unknown but may have occurred because the terminal velocity for the XCTD probes was much less (−0.0428 m s−1) than that provided by the manufacturer for the later cruise. The results suggest that XCTD and expendable bathythermograph (XBT) observations may have a similar depth error because XBT and XCTD do not have pressure sensors, and therefore depth is inferred from the fall rate of the probe. Systematic positive biases (0.018°C on average) were found in XCTD temperature data. The viscous heating effect may contribute to the thermal bias because flow past the XCTD temperature probe is relatively fast (>3 m s−1). Evaluation of XBT/XCTD data by using simultaneous CTD observations data is valuable for validation of statistical corrections of the global XBT/XCTD dataset.

It is difficult to let computer express feelings because of the ambiguity and nonlinearity. But it is important for people to communicate with computers and to built a society where people live with many robots. And it is said that expressing emotions is usuful for high quality data processing. In this paper, we construct an environment where an agent expresses its emotions to convey its intentions to other agents. First, we survey emotion models from the view point of psychology. Next, we propose an agent system that he can control other agents using his emotion expression as their communication method. Finally, we show that the agent could achieve his goal and that the agent had a kind of personality.

In this paper, we review concepts of evidence-based practice (EBP), and provide a discussion of the current limitations of EBP in terms of a relative paucity of efficacy evidence and the limitations of applying findings from randomized controlled clinical trials to individual clinical decisions. We will offer a complementary model of practice-based evidence (PBE) to encourage clinical scientists to design, implement, and evaluate our own clinical practices with high-quality evidence. We will describe two models for conducting PBE: the multiple baseline single-case experimental design and a clinical case study enhanced with generalization and control data probes. Gathering, analyzing, and sharing high-quality data can offer additional support through PBE to support EBP in speech-language pathology. It is our hope that these EBP and PBE strategies will empower clinical scientists to persevere in the quest for best practices.

Without high-quality data, even the best-designed monitoring and evaluation systems will collapse. Chapter 7 introduces some the basics of collecting high-quality data and discusses how to address challenges that frequently arise. High-quality data must be clearly defined and have an indicator that validly and reliably measures the intended concept. The chapter then explains how to avoid common biases and measurement errors like anchoring, social desirability bias, the experimenter demand effect, unclear wording, long recall periods, and translation context. It then guides organizations on how to find indicators, test data collection instruments, manage surveys, and train staff appropriately for data collection and entry.

ABSTRACT The coherent-dispersion spectrometer (CODES) is a new exoplanet detection instrument using the radial velocity (RV) method. This attempts mainly to improve environmental sensitivity and energy utilization by using an asymmetric, common-path Sagnac interferometer instead of a traditional Michelson interferometer. In order to verify its feasibility and to choose the appropriate key parameters to obtain the optimal performance, research on data processing for the design stage of the CODES is performed by systematic simulation and analysis. First, the instrument modelling is carried out for further data analysis according to the principle of the CODES, and the reliability of the model is verified by experiments. Second, the influence of key parameters on fringe visibility is analysed systematically, which provides a certain reference for the choice of the key parameters. Third, the RV inversion method for the CODES is proposed and optimized according to the related analysis results so as to promote RV inversion precision. Finally, the recommended values for the key parameters of the CODES are given. The experimental results show that the data processing error of RV inversion is less than 0.6 m s–1 within the recommended range of key parameters. This indicates that the scheme of the CODES is reasonable and feasible, and that the proposed data processing method is effective and well matched with the instrument design.
