Margaret Pressley is well known in the Pacific Northwest as a teacher of gifted pre-college violinists and as an enabler of conservatory-level music education in Seattle. Attending the University of Washington, with a major in violin performance, she chose a career in violin pedagogy, which has spanned 30 years. Pressley has built a highly successful class of continuously prize-winning students, who are eagerly sought by conservatories. She is the founder and director of the Pressley Conservatory of Music in Seattle. Pressley is a lecturer at Western Washington University and is also on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy, a member of the advisory board of the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival and the National Music Teachers Association Competition String Repertoire Committee, and string chair for the Washington State Music Teachers Association. She was named ASTA's 1994 Washington State Studio Teacher of the Year.

This article chronicles a four-month facilitative teaching collaboration between a music education team from the University of Washington and youth enrolled in a Native American tribal school in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The collaboration embraced a creative process honouring student voices, community values, principles of indigenous pedagogy, and an earnest effort to support student expressive impulses that blend their Native American heritage with a pervasive interest in popular music. A collective songwriting process with roots in indigenous practices from Chiapas, Mexico was employed as the framework through which students confronted social and cultural matters. The school is located in a community where language and ways of living are threatened – a concern upon which students reflected in writing a song partly in their endangered Native language of Sahaptin. The process is described as a pathway to the use of creative avenues that address social issues among marginalized youth towards artistic and sociomusical ends.

AbstractThe Kulshan caldera formed at ∼1.15 Ma on the present-day site of Mt. Baker, Washington State, northwest USA and erupted a compositionally zoned (dacite-rhyolite) magma and a correlative eruptive, the Lake Tapps tephra. This tephra has previously been described, but only from the Puget Lowland of NW Washington. Here an occurrence of a Kulshan caldera correlative tephra is described from the Quaternary Palouse loess at the Washtucna site (WA-3). Site WA-3 is located in east-central Washington, ∼340 km southeast of the Kulshan caldera and ∼300 km east-southeast of the Lake Tapps occurrence in the Puget Lowland. Major- and trace element chemistry and location of the deposit at Washtucna within reversed polarity sediments indicates that it is not correlative with the Mesa Falls, Rockland, Bishop Ash, Lava Creek B or Huckleberry Ridge tephras. Instead the Washtucna deposit is related to the Lake Tapps tephra by fractional crystallisation, but is chemically distinct, a consequence of its eruption from a compositionally zoned magma chamber. The correlation of the Washtucna occurrence to the Kulshan caldera-forming eruption indicates that it had an eruptive volume exceeding 100 km3, and that its tephra could provide a valuable early-Pleistocene chronostratigraphic marker in the Pacific Northwest.

Chive (Allium schoenoprasum L.) is one of the specialty crops grown by farmers in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. In September, 2002, downy mildew symptoms were observed in a 0.2 hectare field planting of chive near Fall City, King County, WA. Downy mildew had not been reported previously on chive in the Pacific Northwest. Accepted for publication 15 April 2003. Published 12 May 2003.

The scientific school “Methodology of pedagogy of music education” is a significant phenomenon in the pedagogy of music education. It was happened in the depths of the Department of methodology and methods of music education of the Moscow Pedagogical State University, headed by a talented scientist, a great teacher-musician, amazing person who gave his whole life to the education of future music teachers – Eduard B. Abdullin. Today, followers of this scientific school work in many parts of the world, continuing the ideas laid down by its founder. One of the conceptual positions of the School is the unity of philosophy, theory, and practice in the work of a teacher-musician, the attitude to music as a carrier of value, the most important “tool” for personality formation, and the source of student creative potential development. The philosophical level of the musical and pedagogical process is a key component of the worldview training of the future teacher-musician in all forms and at all levels of education at the University: in lecture and seminar-practical work, individual communication between the teacher and the student as a collective subject of the musical and creative process, in project and other extracurricular work. Philosophical understanding of music and music education is possible in three aspects: ontological, epistemological, and axiological. The unity of these facets of understanding the musical and pedagogical reality allows us to approach the study of the phenomenon in question from the position of a holistic, systematic, multi-level approach, which determines the research essence of the concept of Eduard B. Abdullin’s scientific school.

I asked Walker why the Spirit Dances were held in the Winter. He told me that in the Winter the Earth's reserves are low, so the people must dance to create energy for the Earth during the Winter months. At the time I was a graduate student in anthropology at the University of British Columbia doing my field studies in the Salish Guardian Spirit Dance Ceremonials of the Pacific Northwest Coast (Kenny, 1982). Walker didn't seem to care as much about the academics as he cared about the fact that I was Native American myself. And he wanted to support my learning about healing and the arts. The Winter Dances, as the Salish people call them, are known for healing young adults in Pacific Northwest Coast Native societies who are not able to be cured by standard medical and psychological treatments (Kenny, 1982; Jilek, 1972).

Wood forget-me-not cultivars are popular ornamentals in the Pacific Northwest. In western Washington, this species frequently displays symptoms and signs of powdery mildew after anthesis. This report records the disease from King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Skagit counties and describes and illustrates symptoms of the disease as well as taxonomically important features of the causal organism.
