Gaining and Training a Digital Colleague: Employee Responses to Robotization

This study shows how introducing new technology can be like welcoming a digital colleague. Designed to mimic the actions of employees, robotic process automation is a technology that involves developing software robots to perform standardized tasks. Although beneficial for the firm, robotization may come at a cost for the employees, since the technology puts positions at risk by automating manual procedures. In this study, I used a case study approach to examine how employees responded to robotization in three organizations. The findings revealed that the employee responses were overwhelmingly constructive and positive. In addition to responding with a big-picture perspective and finding opportunities, the employees humanized software robots as new digital colleagues, with whom they developed relationships. The results discussed in this study contribute to understanding technology-driven change by empirically illustrating employees’ multidimensional—affective, behavioral, and cognitive—responses to robotization, and the supportive context securing implementation.

Background: One of the diverse communities was found in Maluku Province. Traditional diver diving expertise is obtained from generation to generation. Traditional divers have not received formal education and training related to diving. The safety and health aspects of the driving method and the tools used are not according to the standard. The risk of injury and illness due to non-standard diving has increased even higher, although to date the health aspects of traditional divers in Maluku Province have never been explored. Objective: This study aims to explore the perceptions of the risk of diving safety and health behavior in traditional divers who experience paralysis in Maluku Province. Method: The study used qualitative with a case study approach. The subjects of this study were traditional diver fishermen in Ambon City, West Seram District, and Buru Province District with ten participants. The research phase in the form of an interview will begin on January 15 - February 15, 2019. Data analysis uses thematic theory driven. Results: Identification found two main themes: 1) Vulnerability; and 2) Severity. Conclusion: Traditional diver's perceptions of safety and health while diving can form self-efficacy so as to reduce morbidity and mortality from diving. Keyword: perception; safety and health behavior; and traditional divers ABSTRAK Latar belakang: Salah satu komunitas penyelam ditemukan di Provinsi Maluku. Keahlian menyelam penyelam tradisional diperoleh secara turun temurun. Penyelam tradisional belum memperoleh pendidikan dan pelatihan formal terkait penyelaman. Aspek keselamatan dan kesehatan dari metode menyelam dan alat yang digunakan belum sesuai standar. Risiko cidera dan penyakit akibat penyelaman yang tidak standar meningkat lebih tinggi, meskipun sampai saat ini aspek kesehatan penyelam tradisional di Provinsi Maluku belum pernah di ekplorasi. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi tentang persepsi risiko perilaku keselamatan dan kesehatan menyelam pada penyelam tradisional yang mengalami kelumpuhan di Provinsi Maluku. Metode: Penelitian menggunakan kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah nelayan penyelam tradisional yang berada di Kota Ambon, Kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat, dan Kabupaten Buru Provinsi sejumlah sepuluh partisipan. Tahap penelitian berupa wawancara akan dimulai pada 15 Januari – 15 Februari 2019. Analisis data mengunakan tematik theory driven. Hasil: Identifikasi menemukan dua tema utama: 1) Kerentanan; dan 2) Keparahan. Kesimpulan: Persepsi penyelam tradisional tentang keselamatan dan kesehatan saat menyelam dapat membentuk efikasi diri sehingga dapat menurunkan angka kesakitan dan kematian akibat menyelam. Purpose Sustainability has globally become a mantra to address complex and unprecedented survival, social, political and peace issues. Higher education institutions bear responsibility to address them. This paper aims to explore barriers that Pakistani public universities (PPUs) face in embedding sustainability at their campuses. This paper also offers potential opportunities to take initiatives to minimize barriers and move towards a sustainable future. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on case study approach, and data were gathered through interviews and documents. Interviews with 11 academic administrators were conducted to gain deeper understanding on issues of governance and its influence on sustainability. Data were analysed using thematic analysis that created thematic map/model. Findings Key findings include, firstly, that majority of participants think poor governance is the biggest issue in demoting sustainability. This barrier causes an array of interconnected barriers. Secondly, participants strongly associate unsustainability with lack of institutional change and training. Finally, lack of resources was the most frequently articulated barrier. Findings provided a rationale to propose suggestions to promote sustainability. Originality/value Developed countries are leaders in promoting sustainability, whereas developing countries are laggards. Pakistan, a developing country, does not have substantial research to reveal the barriers PPUs are facing to promote sustainability. This paper is an attempt to address research gap in identifying barriers to sustainability.

Aim: This article provides insight into the portfolio of regulations advancing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) deployment. Using a taxonomy of policy portfolio tools adapted for regulations specific to CCS, this research identifies regulatory gaps as well as supports for CCS projects. Design / Research methods: Through a case study approach, this article analyzes the regulatory provisions in six jurisdictions (Texas, North Dakota, the U.S, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Canada) which have a successful CCS facility. Analyzing the provisions and content of regulations in these jurisdictions, this article highlights regulatory supports or areas of gaps for CCS projects in each jurisdiction. Conclusions / findings: There is no uniform definition or categorization of CO2 as a hazard, waste, pollutant or commodity across jurisdictions. This has serious impact on CO2 transport, especially across jurisdictions. It also impacts the administration of storage systems for CCS facilities. Regulations focusing primarily on technical aspects of CCS including capture, transport, and liability predominate while there are less regulatory provisions for the financial aspects of CCS technology as well as public engagement and support. While capital grants and emission and tax credits are the predominant financial issues covered in regulations, contract for differences, streamlining emission trading across borders and enhancing cooperation and multilevel engagement in CCS warrant more attention. Originality / value of the article: Many scenarios to maintain global warming below 2 degrees Celsius require combinations of new technology including CCS. The focus on CCS cost as a barrier to deployment overshadows the needs for regulatory support as a means of reducing uncertainties and de-risking CCS investments.

The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the development of the Literacy Culture of SDN Gladak Anyar IV Pamekasan students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive study method using a case study approach. Data collection methods were carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation obtained from school leaders, teachers, and students. Data analysis used an interactive model with data documentation, data visualization and validation. The process of developing a literacy culture is carried out in a three-step process. (1) Planning the development of a literacy culture, then setting goals, compiling programs, formulating strategies, and managing facilities and infrastructure. (2) Implementation of literacy culture development. The implementation of literacy culture development involves competency courses, development and training. (3) Assessment in the form of weekly, monthly and annual assessments. As a result, the results of the development of a literacy culture show that students' reading interest in reading can increase.

This paper investigates the implementation and use of an internal organisational blog by several departments in the HR division in a large public sector financial organisation in the UK. This qualitative study adopts a case study approach and examines the experiences of staff using the blog to explore whether it can facilitate organisational learning. The thinking and decisions that informed the pilot study are also investigated. Initial findings indicate that implementing an internal organisational blog does not revolve around the technology itself, but the work required to inform and educate staff about the idea of using a blog for working purposes. This paper has practical implications for the practitioner community with reference to organisational management informing them of issues to consider prior to implementing new technology in team environments. The paper also examines approaches towards maintaining technology initiatives (in this case blogs) once they are up and running. The unique focus of this paper is that it explores blog use from the perspective of individuals who have never used them before as opposed to a department that is already familiar with the technology.

This study discuss about the strategy of National Archives on improving the quality of archival services. The main problems of this study are how the strategy of Sub-Directorate of Archives Services on improving the quality services and what the factor that can influence the quality services. This study aimed to describe the services’ strategy that is undertook by National Archives of The Republic of Indonesia. This research’s method is qualitative-descriptive through a case-study approach. The conclusion of this research shows, are: Develop of human resources through the delegation to enroll some education and training, ISO 9001:2008 certification about Management Quality’s System, integrated static archives services’ innovation, usage of technology, synergy of institutions, service of static archiving usage facilitated, and efficiency of archive services time’s period. The factors that influence the improvement of quality services are human resources, tools and infrastructures, and the availability of the archive.

There are various organizations that have automated the technology used in accounting and financial services to increase productivity and optimize operating costs. Among the automation technology transformations used in accounting and financial services is Robotic Process Automation (RPA). However, not all technological transformations are positive because they may cause fear among employees due to changes in the work process. Hence, the aim of this study is to understand the influence of RPA towards employee acceptance in the finance and accounting unit. This study uses an in-depth case study approach in one of the largest oil and gas company in the world. The result of the study showed that RPA technology has significant influences on employee acceptance. The results are discussed according to five elements which are threatening job opportunities, changes in the scope of work, adaptation to technology, career advancement, work-life balance, and job satisfaction. The results showed that employees must adapt with the changes due to the new technology implementation and embrace it positively because at the end of the day, new automation will always appear. Furthermore, the changes that take place must be openly accepted in order to maintain the reputation of their profession as well as the achievements of the organization.
