Some aspects of the biology and chemistry of leaf-cutting ants
Keyword(s):
The importance of leaf-cutting ants is increasing in many parts of Latin America, particularly where agriculture has advanced rapidly in recent times; thus Atta capiguara, a grass-cutting species unknown as a pest in 1944, is now spreading rapidly through grassland areas of Southern Brazil. Recent studies of ant behaviour such as trail-making and leaf transport, and the chemical factors involved, fascinating purely as a research topic, may point the way to improved methods of control.
