As a consequence of the improvements in diagnostic technology along with gains in life expectancy of cancer patients, the incidence of spine metastases has increased. Spine metastases can affect the patient’s quality of life and negatively impact on their prognosis. Multidisciplinary treatments involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiosurgery and radiotherapy. Spine metastases should be treated using a multidisciplinary and integrated approach that involves spinal surgeons, medical oncologists and radiologists. More research is required to elucidate the pathological mechanisms involved in the aetiology of spine metastasis. This review describes the current situation regarding the diagnosis of spine metastasis, what is understood about the pathological development of spine metastasis and the evolution of the multidisciplinary treatments that are available for patients with spine metastases.

Patients with lung cancer experience elevated risk of venous thromboembolism. Cancer patients with thrombosis have a shorter life expectancy and the occurrence of VTE worsens the quality of life and may delay, interrupt, or completely halt the cancer therapy. In a large cohort of lung cancer patients we monitored the incidence of venous thromboembolism and we identified groups of patients with the highest risk of venous thromboembolism suitable for antithrombotic prophylaxis, which could favourably affect their morbidity and mortality.

Introduction: In the Primorsky Region, there is a steady upward trend in breast cancer morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle, material wellbeing, availability and timeliness of receiving medical care, along with genetic predisposition, have a significant impact on life expectancy and mortality of cancer patients, which is of great importance for public health, especially when developing a strategy to improve the quality of life and health status of the population. Objective: The study aimed to analyze the situation and to develop a model for mortality prediction based on breast cancer prevalence rates and socio-economic indicators of the population of the Primorsky Region. Materials and methods: The study was carried out based on data from the Federal State Statistics Service and the Medical Information Analytical Center of the Primorsky Region for 1994–2019. Correlation analysis was used to analyze statistical data and the prediction model was developed using artificial neural networks. Results: In 2000–2019, there was a rise in breast cancer mortality by 39.13 % in the region. The statistical analysis of the relationship between socio-economic indicators and the mortality rate showed significant correlations, which were further used for the development of a neural network model. We observed that predictions were most influenced by parameters of material well-being and health care quality. Conclusion: The established relationships prove the necessity of considering them when designing management decisions aimed to increase life expectancy and improve the quality of life in breast cancer patients.

Pain is a significant and alarming symptom of cancer seriously affecting the activity and quality of life of patients. Recent research proved that inadequate analgesia shortens life expectancy. Therefore, pain relief is not only a possibility but a professional, ethical and moral commitment to relieve patients from suffering, as well as ensure their adequate quality of life and human dignity. Proper pain relief can be achieved with medical therapy in most of the cases and the pharmacological alternatives are available in Hungary. Yet medical activity regarding pain relief is far from the desired. This paper gives a short summary of the guidelines on medical pain management focusing particularly on the use of opioids. Orv.
