Minnesota Department of Transportation Case Studies for Coreless Asphalt Pavement Compaction Assessment

Available methods for assessing hot-mix-asphalt pavements are typically restricted to destructive methods such as coring that damage the pavement and are limited in coverage. Recently, density profiling systems (DPS) have become available with the capability of measuring asphalt compaction continuously, giving instantaneous measurements a few hundred feet behind the final roller of the freshly placed pavement. Further developments of the methods involved with DPS processing have allowed for coreless calibration by correlating dielectric measurements with asphalt specimens fabricated at variable air void contents using superpave gyratory compaction. These developments make DPS technology an attractive potential tool for quality control because of the real-time nature of the results, and quality assurance because of the ability to measure a more statistically significant amount of data as compared with current quality assurance methods such as coring. To test the viability of these recently developed methods for implementation, multiple projects were selected for field trials. Each field trial was used to assess the coreless calibration prediction by comparing with field cores where dielectric measurements were made. Ground truth core validation on each project showed the reasonableness of the coreless calibration method. The validated dielectric to air void prediction curves allowed for assessment of the tested pavements in relation to as-built characteristics, with the DPS providing the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cores per mile. Statistical measures were used to demonstrate how DPS can provide a comprehensive asphalt compaction evaluation that can be used to inform construction-related decisions and has potential as a future quality assurance tool.

Abstract This paper focuses on the calibration of apertures for rectangular waveguides using open-short-load (OSL) standards and transmission-line (TL) approaches. The reflection coefficients that were measured using both calibration techniques were compared with the coefficients acquired using the thru-reflect-line (TRL) method. In this study, analogous relationships between the results of OSL calibration and TL calibration were identified. In the OSL calibration method, the theoretical, open-standard values are calculated from quasi-static integral models. The proposed TL calibration procedure is a simple, rapid, broadband approach, and its results were validated by using the OSL calibration method and by comparing the results with the calculated integral admittance. The quasi-static integral models were used to convert the measured reflection coefficients to relative permittivities for the infinite samples and the thin, finite samples

The degradation of bituminous materials as a result of ageing has a significant effect on asphalt pavement performance. In this study, one porous asphalt (PA) section and one stone mastic asphalt (SMA) asphalt pavement section were designed and constructed in 2014 and exposed to the actual environmental condition. To study the change in the pavement’s mechanical properties, asphalt cores were collected from both test sections annually. The change in stiffness modulus was determined via cyclic indirect tensile tests. To investigate the ageing behavior across the pavement depth, the bitumen was extracted and recovered from 13 mm slices along the depths of the cores. The chemical composition and rheological properties of the field-recovered bitumen, and that of original bitumen aged in standard short- and long-term ageing protocols, were investigated by means of the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and Dynamic Shear Rheometer. The results show that the effect of mineral aggregate packing, and therefore of air-void distribution and connectivity, on the ageing sensitivity of the pavements with time was significant, as the changes in the stiffness of the PA mixture were greater than that of SMA mixture. In addition, the results of field-recovered bitumen show that there is an ageing gradient inside the porous asphalt layer, however, the ageing of SMA mainly happens on the surface of the layer. Finally, the field-recovered and laboratory-aged bitumen results demonstrate a weak relation between field and standard laboratory ageing protocols.

In recent years, a considerable number of approaches have been proposed by the researchers to evaluate infectious diseases by examining the digital images of peripheral blood cell (PBC) recorded using microscopes. In this chapter, a semi-automated approach is proposed by integrating the Shannon's entropy (SE) thresholding and DRLS-based segmentation procedure to extract the stained blood cell from digital PBC pictures. This work implements a two-step practice with cuckoo search (CS) and SE-based pre-processing and DRLS-based post-processing procedure to examine the PBC pictures. During the experimentation, the PBC pictures are adopted from the database leukocyte images for segmentation and classification (LISC). The proposed approach is implemented by considering the RGB scale and gray scale version of the PBC pictures, and the performance of the proposed approach is confirmed by computing the picture similarity and statistical measures computed with the extracted stained blood cell with the ground truth image.

Porous asphalt pavement is defined as an asphalt concrete that is designed with open gradation aggregate which helps in removing the water with an air void content of about 20% by creating drainage channels. Open gradation consists of large amounts of coarse aggregates and small amounts of fine aggregates. The water is drained due to this hollow structure, this air void content in the porous asphalt mixture which inevitably decreases with time is the main parameter affecting the service life as well as the structural and functional performance. Moreover, the reduction in air void content is one of the main reasons for the loss of permeability in porous asphalt pavements and this lead to the increase in pavement density under heavy traffic conditions. Each country has its own technical asphalt specification involving the required compaction energy and temperature. This study involves the effect of compaction temperatures and numbers on the air void in porous asphalt pavements prepared with 50/70 penetration grade bitumen. As a result of experimental studies, it has been observed that the reduced compaction temperature and the number of compaction (energy) increase the air void level in porous asphalt pavements.

In this paper, a formation control method of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) by vision-based positioning is presented. The relative positions and attitudes of two UAVs with respect to a visual marker attached to the third UAV is estimated by a camera calibration method. Based on the estimated positions and attitudes, two UAVs are controlled to the desired positions to form a given formation with respect to the third UAV. A simplified dynamics model of a quadrotor UAV is utilized to design a controller. The proposed formation control method is validated by an experiment with a motion capture system which provides the ground truth of the position data.
